NEWS OF OLD BRUTONIANS
was sculpted by Willie Newton, a former
jockey who has created the last six Derby
trophies. Newton, 44, said; “I wanted to
commemorate the fact that it was the 50th
anniversary of the coronation and that gave
me an opportunity to also recognise a
magnificent horse in Pinza and a genuine
racing legend in Sir Gordon.”
The trophy depicts Pinza with a stable lad.
“Using the lad allowed me to identify the era
through the clothes that he wore. It is also
good to be able to recognise the enormous
debt racing owes to stable staff.”
Today’s Derby is the 224th running of the
race at Epsom and the richest horse race in
Europe, with a total prize fund of nearly £1.5
million.
David HOPCROFT (P76/78) has written from
Sydney where he is now the Manager of the
Zara (10) and Dylan (8) attend private schools
catch up with them.”
Charlie YATES (L77/82) On leaving school,
Charlie went to college in Portsmouth to study
Marine Biology. Finding no work in this
sphere, he took and passed the Civil Service
exam. Still thinking in marine terms, he
applied to work for Customs and Excise and
was sent to the VAT Department in
Kennington! This proved a blessing in disguise
and he is now in International Trade Strategy,
giving lectures and seminars here and abroad.
He has recently found working in the House
of Commons, getting new legislation through
Parliament, particularly interesting. In 1988 he
married Petra Clarke and they have two sons:
Jack, born in 1994, and Charlie James, born in
1999.
firm, he is now their Commercial Manager,
dealing with large wine contracts, training
and wine tasting. David married Michelle
Fullbrook in 1989 and they have two sons:
Samuel, born in 1996, and Alexander, born in
1998. (Address: 41 Knole Road, Dartford, Kent
a trial in Bournemouth Crown Court last May.
The case concerned a mother and son who
pretended to be husband and wife in order to
obtain a £120,000 remortgage. They then
embarked on a five-week spending spree in
France before handing themselves in to police,
having squandered all but £525 of the money.
Justin secured his prosecution.
his new address in Winchester (see Changes
London in property. Anthony ‘quite often
time to time through work’ and David
1993 with a degree in Land Management and
Economy he left for Hong Kong where he
worked in Commercial Property. He is now a
London with his wife Lucy, who is
French/American; they have 2 sons - Hugo (4)
and Tristan (18 months)
On learning of Andrew Leach’s retirement
from teaching Richard writes that “as my
housemaster for 5 teenage years and as a
parent now (and having done a little growing
up since!), I realise of course the enormous
impact Andrew had in steering my path.
That path was not always clear, but having a
man of such skills of leadership and
compassion to guide the way, I have no doubt
has been in some great part responsible for
who I am today.”
