Story of Preethi & Shanmugavel<br />

15-year-old Preethi and her brother, Shanmugavel who is 13 years<br />

old are residents of ‘Shanthi Nilayam’, a Home for the<br />

HIV/AIDS affected children in Karur, Tamil Nadu, South<br />

India. They come from Somur village which is 12 km from Karur.<br />

“My father was a lorry driver and my mother would work as an<br />

agricultural laborer for the landlords. Their earnings were quite<br />

sufficient to run the family. Whatever our needs/desires were, they<br />

satisfied us with all joy. We would receive attractive gifts from<br />

them especially on our birthdays and when we fair well in our<br />

exams. My mother would prepare special dishes for us on such<br />

occasions and it would be such a joyful time together at home.”<br />

mother was there with us always caring for us. I remember having<br />

As regards the Work Experience<br />

Program in our residential childcare<br />

homes our earlier experience of<br />

introducing children to various<br />

contemporary life skills and other<br />

demanding vocational skills indeed has<br />

proven very useful in their lives. In other<br />

words it is equipping the progeny in<br />

numerous means of earning livelihood.<br />

Hence, in a resolute move to familiarize<br />

our children with the life skills, we have<br />

petty quarrels often with my sister and my mother favoring me<br />

which I silently enjoyed.”<br />

“All of a sudden my father became very sick and was rushed to the<br />

hospital where he was found to have got infected with AIDS.<br />

Immediately, my mother was taken for a HIV test and her reports<br />

showed that she was infected as well. This disturbed our peace at<br />

home.<br />

My father’s sickness worsened day by day and he died 2 years back.<br />

We as a family are suffering his loss till this day. It did not end<br />

here; my infected mother was on medication. Due to high dosage of<br />

medicines, she lost her eyes sight.<br />

We were shattered.”<br />

It is their maternal grandmother who lives with them that is<br />

earning and taking care of the family. She works as an<br />

agricultural laborer for the landlords in Somur village.<br />

As she is aged and weak, she finds it very difficult to work in the<br />

fields. Besides, it is a seasonal job and during un-season, she is<br />

forced to take up short time-bound jobs in Textile Industries, when<br />

available.<br />

provide nutritious food, clothing and<br />

importantly education to their children.<br />

blessed by the intervention.<br />

“I would often worry as to what will happen to my grand children<br />

after the passing away of my blind daughter and when I am no<br />

more??? At the right time, I came to know about ‘Shanthi<br />

Nilayam’, a Home to care for the HIV/AIDS affected children<br />

in Karur. I became very happy and approached the concerned<br />

persons and got admission for my dear grand children,<br />

Preethi and Shanmugavel. Now, I need not worry at<br />

all.”<br />

“I just can’t believe I got such a safe and secured Home<br />

to stay and an opportunity to continue with my<br />

education.”<br />

“I just love the company of my friends in Shanthi<br />

Nilayam. I am so happy after coming here. I am also<br />

very happy I could go to school again. Oh! I just love<br />

this place.”<br />

course we miss our dear mother and her love.<br />
