A major increase in CLT protected lands
aided by the San Mateo County Tax Default process
Thank you all, both cash and land donors,
for a major increase in Coastside Land Trust (CLT)
protected lands for 2011. The number of CLT ocean
blufftop parcels grew from 46 to 102. Including
24 easements, CLT now has 1035 acres under
management along the San Mateo County coast,
ranging from Tunitas Creek to El Granada.
CLT purchased 26 of the new parcels through the San
Mateo County Tax Default process. 57 of our donors
contributed $125,000 to allow the purchase of all the
parcels that were available on the ocean blufftops of Half
Moon Bay. If these donors had not helped us, the County
would have auctioned the lots for private ownership.
Private landowners donated 30 of the new parcels because
of letters sent to ocean blufftop landowners several times a
year. CLT has developed a consistent response from generous
families who prefer to see their land protected as
permanent open space, rather than used for private
development.
There are two reasons this success in acquiring all of these
areas is so important. First, families bike, walk, and run
along the ocean blufftops. However, even with our great
success, much land remains privately owned. CLT can
... with a positive turn.
from the executive director from the president
A Dramatic Start…
2011 was a challenging and rewarding year for
the Coastside Land Trust (CLT).
The year started with heartbreaking damage by off-road
vehicles at Wavecrest. CLT coordinated with the Peninsula
Open Space Trust, San Mateo County Parks Department
and the City of Half Moon Bay to move quickly to repair
the damage. Good news followed the restoration work by
Go Native with continued rains that encouraged plant
growth and repair of soils. Today the land is restored and
once again in beautiful coastal prairie habitat.
The staff, interns, and volunteers have replaced the
exotic landscaping at our office on Main Street in Half
Moon Bay with native plants and bark cover. The change is
dramatic, and much easier and less expensive to maintain.
Volunteers provided the labor and enthusiasm for
collecting over two tons of trash from Pilarcitos Creek,
Wavecrest and the Railroad Right of Way. Trash found
included mattresses, large sections of cars, bicycles, concrete,
and even a kitchen sink. Cigarette butts continue to
be the largest in number, with over two thousand collected
at one event.
We opened our art gallery in September with the
support of photographer Beau Gill, who donated all of
the proceeds from the sale of his art to CLT, and Barbara
Miller, who provided the expertise and energy to create a
beautiful space for the display of artwork. Since the
opening, we have joined the Half Moon Bay South on
Main Arts (HMB SOMA) coalition to promote art in
Half Moon Bay. If you haven’t been by to see the beautiful
artwork, plan to do so soon.
The Coastside Children’s Program invited CLT to
present a series of outdoor education lessons, called
Junior Land Stewards. The lessons covered land stewardship,
water and soil, and plants and animals, with
students ranging in age from preschool to 5th grade.
About 700 volunteers and guests attended the bird
and wildflower workshops and walks and other events
last year. This doesn’t include the thousands we were able
to meet at the Pumpkin Festival, HMB Farmers Market
and New Leaf tabling for the Envirotokens program.
With the acquisition of several Surf Beach parcels, we
added dry-farmed hay and peas to the crops grown on
CLT lands.
All of the above would not have been possible without
our staff members: Office Manager Lindsey Peterson and
Stewardship Coordinator Deborah Meckler, a number of
dedicated and skilled interns, hundreds of capable
enthusiastic volunteers, and of course
you. With your continued support, the
coming year will bring even more land
under permanent protection for
open space, the land will be managed
carefully and we’ll all have the
opportunity to get out and enjoy
the beautiful coastside.
Jo Chamberlain,
Executive Director
Perfect timing is not always easily accomplished, but it
appears Coastside Land Trust has been able to do just that.
Due to depressed real estate prices, generous donations of
both property and dollars, plus a new
parcel tax in Half Moon Bay, CLT
has been able to acquire beautiful
bluff top properties at a rate which
exceeded our expectations.
The rains have finally arrived
and the bluff tops are absolutely
remarkable in their color,
wild life and general beauty. I
encourage all to partake in
exploring this unique treasure we
have been given on the coast.
Spring generates optimism and
the volunteers who help steward
our properties have certainly
added to the general excitement
within the organization. So many hours have been given to
clean up and help preserve our waterways, beaches and bluff
lands. It would be impossible to complete our mission
without the generous help of so many.
Please remember to visit us at our new offices and art gallery
at 788 Main Street in downtown Half Moon Bay. The art
gallery was opened with a grand ribbon cutting by the then
mayor, Naomi Patridge, and
other members of the city
council on September 9th.
The rains have finally
arrived and the bluff tops
are absolutely remarkable
in their color, wild life
and general beauty.
The gallery has added a new element to Main Street and
certainly has drawn additional attention to our efforts to
current residents and visitors alike. The art, of course,
represents our beautiful landscapes.
We continue to move forward in soliciting and acquiring
properties to remain open for all to enjoy. Please give us a
visit, or a call, and we can help get you involved on an active
level that fits your schedule.
■ Lindsey Peterson, Office Manager
2011 brought big changes to our intern program. We were
graced with six highly capable interns who dramatically
increased our work capacity and decreased our turnaround
time. These welcome additions to the CLT team were much
appreciated as our multitude of new properties required site
inspections, monitoring, cataloging and reporting. In
addition, our interns spent dozens of hours streamlining our
records and filing system, which has proved beneficial and
timesaving.
Our 2011 outreach programs saw a marked improvement as
well, with intern support in the planning, advertising and
implementation of our workshop events and clean-up days.
Workshops were so successful this year that we had to move
out of the beloved Train Depot location to larger venues
around the community. Also in 2011, Coastside Children’s
Programs invited us to lead environmental enrichment
classes with local schoolchildren, and we launched the
by interns and volunteers. The program provided about 100
children an opportunity to experience the joys of open
space, and renewed our dedication to working towards its
preservation.
Thanks to the grueling efforts of our restoration volunteers,
cleanup days and work parties removed thousands of
cigarette butts and mountains of trash from our beautiful
open spaces. We really hope to find less rubbish next year,
but we will remain vigilant at our cleanups, armed with
gloves, loppers and you!
Finally, thank you to all of our compassionate volunteers
who ran our booth at the Pumpkin Festival, helped to set up
for events, pulled cape ivy, picked trash, and contributed
your thoughts, energy and time to the Coastside Land
Volunteers and interns have been the great asset of Coastside
Land Trust’s stewardship effort this past year. We have
acquired dozens of new properties that needed site inspections,
baseline inspections,
All our existing properties needed annual
inspections, reports, and fieldwork parties
to clean up trash, remove invasive plants,
photo-documentation and
all the associated reports
and paperwork. And all our
existing properties needed
annual inspections, reports,
and fieldwork parties to
clean up trash, remove
invasive plants, and obliterate
graffiti. (Turns out that a coat of local mud works wonders
to hide graffiti on tree trunks and fallen logs, and the applica-
Local Girl Scout Troop 61956 used a mudding technique to cover up graffiti on
fallen logs.
tion process is good fun into the bargain.) All this work was
only possible with the enthusiastic help of our field volunteers
and the sharp, tech-savvy help of our interns.
■ Deborah Meckler, Stewardship Coordinator
This year we instituted a
streamlining of our property
inspections by adopting a
“lumping” methodology. In
areas like Wavecrest that are
fairly similar throughout,
instead of creating a report for
each individual parcel, we used
GPS to set photo points that would provide visual coverage of
the whole area, and then monitored the area in one intensive
inspection, producing a single report. This was not only easier
than producing a few dozen reports, it also meant that
our report provided a better picture of the area as a
functioning whole —its plants, animals, soils, trails, and
usage.
This year in addition to our work parties and restoration
events at Wavecrest and on the Railroad Right-of-Way,
we participated as site captains for Coastal Cleanup Day
Many thanks to these hard-working volunteers who cleaned up the Wavecrest properties.
where, among other things, we documented the quantity of
cigarette butts collected in riparian areas. The nicotine in
cigarette butts makes them little poison pellets that can kill
small aquatic creatures when the butts wash into waterways.
Coastside Land Trust is actively supporting Half
Moon Bay’s “Hold Your Butt” campaign in the
hopes of keeping our waterways clean.
and obliterate graffiti. The nicotine
These lovely coastal lands provide us with stunning vistas,
recreational opportunities, and habitat for our fellow earth
creatures. We appreciate all your efforts to help us protect and
manage these valuable lands we love. g
Matching Gifts: Many companies will double (and
sometimes triple) the value of their employees’ gifts. To
see if your company participates, contact your Human
Resources Department.
Tax Deductible Donation: Write a check.
Special Memorial or Honorary Gift: We’ll send a card
to the recipient you designate (check with your employer
for matching funds).
Vehicle Donation: It’s easy—we have a contract with
Charitable Auto Resources. They do everything, pick up
the vehicle and handle the paperwork. You can do it
through our website.
Volunteer: Last year our dedicated volunteers donated
hundreds of hours helping at events, assembling mailings
and poppy seed packets, carrying our banner in local
parades, and cleaning and restoring our lands.
Another simple way to help preserve open space: Take your own bag into New Leaf Community
Market and they will give you a token at the cash register. You can then drop the token into a container
near the front door to make a donation to any of several local non-profits—including Coastside Land Trust. We’d like
to thank New Leaf Community Markets for caring about the environment and supporting the Coastside Land Trust.
