Teaching Experience of Monika Grothe
Winter semester 2011/12 Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milano, international Medical
Doctor program: Taught the course (60 h) “Introduction to physics for medical students”
Spring semester 2011 Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milano, international Medical
Doctor program: Taught one third (20 h) of the course “Introduction to physics for medical
students”
My professorship in Torino came with the obligation to teach a course with a subject defined in
my contract. It was my responsibility to define the course program.
1st quarter 2007 Univ. of Torino, graduate school: Course (30 h) on “CP violation and
mixing” for PhD students
1st quarter 2006 Univ. of Torino, graduate school: Course (30 h) on “CP violation and
mixing” for PhD students
1st quarter 2005 Univ. of Torino, graduate school: Course (30 h) on “CP violation and
mixing” for PhD students
EXPERIENCE WITH STUDENT SUPERVISION
I have actively sought out opportunities to mentor students. My professional position does not
allow me to be named formally advisor to a graduate student. However, I have co-supervised
several PhD students, typically during their stay at CERN.
The results obtained under my guidance have gained their authors recognition by being included
in collaboration publications and by awarding them presentations at international conferences
and workshops.
Ian Ross, University of Wisconsin, advisor W.Smith
I supervise Ian’s work on the emulation program of the calorimeter trigger algorithms
proposed for the CMS SLHC luminosity upgrades. Furthermore, I supervise Ian’s work
on data-driven electron efficiency corrections which are instrumental for the Z and W plus
jets cross section analyses. The electron efficiency corrections were used in the preliminary
CMS Z and W plus jets cross section result presented at the Moriond 2011 conference.
Kira Grogg, University of Wisconsin, advisor W.Smith
I supervise Kira’s work on W plus jet production which is her thesis subject. Her unfolding
work was crucial for the preliminary CMS Z and W plus jets cross section results presented
at the Moriond 2011 conference. Her full W plus jets cross section measurement will
provide an important cross check for the CMS paper currently under preparation. She
presented her work in several posters at international conferences and will present her
work on behalf of CMS at the meeting of the Division of Particle and Fields of APS in
summer 2011. Kira is graduating in summer 2011.
Christos Lazaridis, University of Wiconsin, advisor W.Smith
I supervise Christos’ work on Z plus jet production which is his thesis subject. Furthermore,
I worked with Christos on the trigger correction factors to the first CMS inclusive
W and Z cross section measurement that was presented at the ICHEP 2010 conference.
Christos presented his work in several posters at international conferences. Christos is
graduating in summer 2011.
2 Monika Grothe, Teaching statement, July 2012
Jessica Leonard, University of Wisconsin, advisor W.Smith
I worked with Jessica on setting up a suite of data quality monitoring plots for electroweak
analyses in the electron channels which have since been used routinely in the CMS DQM
framework. Jessica presented her work on behalf of CMS at an international conference.
Jessica is graduating in summer 2011.
CERN summer students Can You (U Hong-Kong) and Lemuel Pelagio (U of the Philippines),
CERN supervisor A. de Roeck
In summer 2010, I supervised their SLHC trigger efficiency studies.
Sheila Silva do Amaral, PhD student, University of Rio de Janeiro, advisor A.Santoro
I was Sheila’s official advisor at CERN during her 1-year stay there from April 2009 to
March 2010. Sheila worked on the CMS CASTOR calorimeter and on the study of dijet
events separated by a large rapidity gap. Her work on forward-going jets was made public
in a CMS Detector Performance Note.
Dilson de Jesus Damiao, PhD student, University of Rio de Janeiro, advisor A.Santoro
I was Dilson’s official advisor at CERN during his stays there, first in summer of 2006
in the framework of the HELEN exchange program with Latin America, and then again
between November 2007 and April 2009. Dilson worked on measuring the fraction of
single-diffractively produced B mesons at LHC and on the CMS CASTOR calorimeter
(prototype beam tests & installation in CMS). He gave a report on his CASTOR related
work at the Spring Meeting of the German Physical Society 2008.
Xavier Rouby and Severine Ovyn, PhD students, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium,
advisors K. Piotrzkowski and V. Lemaitre
I worked with Xavier and Severine on defining the forward physics triggers for the first-year
trigger menus of CMS. They documented the results in an internal CMS Analysis Note
and presented reports at the Spring Meeting of the German Physical Society in 2008. They
also participated in the study on exclusive dilepton and Upsilon photoproduction, since
made public by CMS. Both Xavier and Severine presented the forward physics program of
CMS at international conferences. Xavier graduated in September 2008. I was an external
member of his PhD evaluation committee at the University of Louvain.
Richard Croft, PhD student, University of Bristol, advisor D.Newbold
I worked with Richard on defining a dedicated forward detectors trigger stream in CMS
during his yearlong stay at CERN in 2004/2005. Our results form a central part of his
PhD thesis (“Emulation of the GCT Jet Processing Chain and Diffractive Trigger Studies
for the CMS Experiment”) which he has finished since. Our results have been published
in the trigger chapter of the CMS Physics Technical Design Report Volume 2 and in the
CMS/TOTEM diffractive and forward physics report. He presented his studies on behalf
of CMS and FP420 at an international conference.
Antonio Vilela Pereira, Master’s student, University of Rio de Janeiro, advisor A.Santoro
I acted as Antonio advisor during his stay at CERN in summer 2006 in the framework of
the HELEN program. The results of his work on diffractive top production are included
in the CMS/TOTEM diffractive and forward physics report. They form also an essential
part of his Master’s thesis.
Fredrik Oljemark, Master’s student, University of Helsinki, advisor K. Österberg
Fredrik wrote his thesis (“First level triggering of diffractively produced low-mass Higgs at
the Large Hardon Collider”) on the calibration of Level-1 trigger jets and on a Level-1 muon
trigger for central exclusive Higgs production. His calibration results are documented in a
CMS Internal Note, have been included in the standard CMS trigger simulation software
Monika Grothe, Teaching statement, July 2012 3
and were used, as indispensable tool, for all Level-1 trigger studies in the CMS Physics
Technical Design Report Volume 2.
