Shreve & Co. 18kt Gold Soup Bowl with Underplate and Spoon
Shreve & Co., a San Francisco institution, was founded in 1852, three years after the beginning of the
California gold rush. Over its history Shreve has produced some wonderful things including the state of
California's gift to Queen Elizabeth for her coronation. Also, special orders for kings, presidents,
sheiks, shahs, and other high profile individuals. One of the more remarkable items made was a 14 pound 18kt
gold life-size figure of a rooster and a 10 inch tall bear made from gold and given to
President Teddy Roosevelt during a visit to San Francisco.
This wonderful 18kt gold soup bowl with under plate and spoon certainly follows the Shreve tradition of producing
unique gold items. The pattern is called “14th Century” and was produced during the Arts and Crafts period
(1897-1915). The Lenox cobalt & gold liner measures 5 inches in diameter. The liner is held by an 18kt gold cup
that measures 2 ½ inches high by approximately 6 inches wide (including the Handle). The cup rests on an under
plate that is 6 1/8 inches in diameter by 1 inch high at its edge. To complete the grouping is a spoon that
measures 6 3/8 inches in length. All three pieces are marked Shreve & Co. 18kt. All three gold pieces have a
lustrous hand hammered surface indicative of the Arts & Crafts Style. The underplate and cup are monogrammed
with the initials “JB” in Old English script.
This item falls into the category of great rarity,
and owning this unique piece is certain to make
you feel special as well.
