OSSI mandates NovaNano to secure a launch
opportunity in 2012 for the first individual satellite
Paris Air Show, Le Bourget (France) – 21 June 2011
Open Source Satellite Initiative (OSSI) represented by Future Electronics
Technology Mixer company - South Korea - entrusts today NovaNano -
France - with the task to secure the launch contract for the G.O.D. (Global
Orbiting Device) nanosatellite with the targeted launch date in 2012.
NovaNano is hence in charge of providing to OSSI a turnkey service: to find
and to broker the relevant launch opportunity, to supply technological support
and to carry out the launch campaign.
G.O.D. satellite is a 1Kg nanosatellite made by an artist. Itʼs a test satellite
platform made only out of commercial components to show that individual
people can build by their own. G.O.D. satellite has 4 strong LEDs and a
Cosmic Microwave Background radiation detector, which will later be used in
art performances.
G.O.D. satellite will be launched in a “rideshare fashion” (as an auxiliary
passenger) on a Launch Vehicle already commissioned by primary
passenger. NovaNano, which is keeping continuous relations with various
launch vehicle operators will find the most adapted launch opportunity for
G.O.D. satellite in terms of orbital parameters such as altitude, inclination, etc.
Furthermore, for the purpose of this contract NovaNano will manufacture a
flight model of FlyMate - an in-house developed and advanced deployment
mechanism. FlyMate is an interface between the Launch Vehicle and the
nano satellites and it remains attached to the Launch Vehicle after the
separation. The G.O.D. satellite will be integrated and held within the
FlyMate structure during the ascension phase and ejected into space once
the final orbit will be reached.
Hojun Song, OSSI Managing Director:
“Sputnik was launched in 1957. Even a dog (Laika) went to space too. I
believe it is natural to think by 2011 that itʼs a time for an individual to start
space projects of own. There will be hurdles, but if we donʼt start now, we
might never be able to start one in the future. Letʼs bring space fantasy back
to people!”
Stanislaw Ostoja, NovaNano Chairman:
“This is a very important step in the development of NovaNano Launch
Services on the global nanosatellite market, as we sign with our first customer
from South Korea. We are delighted and proud to support the mission of OSSI
to launch the first satellite made by an individual into orbit and consequently to
bring space closer to general public.”
About OSSI
Open Source Satellite Initiative is a project by artist Hojun Song started in
2008. The goal of OSSI is to lower entry barriers of space programs, so nonscience
people can also contribute with various ideas. For this, OSSI has
been collecting commercial components that were used in successful space
programs to build a cheap and a D.I.Y.-able satellite platform while keeping all
the basic satellite functionalities.
Also to raise attentions, OSSI has been giving talks on accessible space
programs, having art exhibitions, and making films, books, website for easy
information delivery.
When the launch will be successful and the satellite will work, all the
information on how to build the satellite and on the process of launching the
satellite will be fully shared via OSSI website.
Hojun Song believes, with the help of out-of-box thoughts from general
people, OSSI will lead the similar revolution that had been happened in
computer history.
