Course Description The purpose of this course is to review basic theoretical concepts deal<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

common-practice melody, harmony, <strong>and</strong> voice lead<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> form, <strong>and</strong> to<br />

demonstrate their analytical <strong>and</strong> compositional uses.<br />

Course Objectives To demonstrate an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of figured bass, voice lead<strong>in</strong>g, form, <strong>and</strong><br />

harmonic progression through a series of written exercises <strong>and</strong> analysis<br />

projects.<br />

Required Text There will be no uniform required text for this course; students are required,<br />

however, to possess, br<strong>in</strong>g to class, <strong>and</strong> use any st<strong>and</strong>ard undergraduate music<br />

theory text. A list of such books can be found at<br />

Theory Materials (Basic Undergraduate)”.<br />

Grad<strong>in</strong>g Policy Students are responsible for all material covered <strong>in</strong> class <strong>and</strong> assigned for<br />

homework. Grad<strong>in</strong>g will be weighted as follows: Assignments = 25%; Midterm<br />

= 25%; F<strong>in</strong>al = 50%.<br />

Grad<strong>in</strong>g Scale 90-100% = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, below 60% = F<br />

Assignments Regular assignments are due at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the class session <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong><br />

the syllabus. Late assignments will not be accepted without an acceptable<br />

excuse supported by documentation. Acceptable excuses are a personal illness,<br />

a death <strong>in</strong> the family, or a university-sponsored trip. Failure to attend class<br />

does not excuse late assignments (leave them <strong>in</strong> my mailbox before class if<br />

unable to attend). In addition, there may be mid-week assignments that you<br />

will submit to me electronically by midnight on Thursdays. These assignments<br />

may consist of a portion of the larger weekly assignments, or may be additional<br />

exercises to help you prepare for the regular assignment. Assignments will be<br />

distributed <strong>in</strong> class <strong>and</strong>/or electronically. Students who miss a class are<br />

responsible for gett<strong>in</strong>g any h<strong>and</strong>outs <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation on the assignment from<br />

fellow students or the <strong>in</strong>structor.<br />

Exams Exams will not be given outside of the scheduled exam hour unless<br />

arrangements are made with the <strong>in</strong>structor prior to the exam. If an emergency

arises, students must notify the <strong>in</strong>structor by call<strong>in</strong>g the School of Music prior<br />

to the scheduled exam time. Messages left at the School of Music are dated <strong>and</strong><br />

timed. There will be no exceptions to this exam policy unless the student’s<br />

dean notifies the <strong>in</strong>structor otherwise.<br />

Attendance Attendance is required – with only fourteen class meet<strong>in</strong>gs, each one is crucial<br />

to your success <strong>in</strong> the class. If you are unable to attend class, please leave me a<br />

voice or email message <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g the reason for your absence. If you anticipate<br />

miss<strong>in</strong>g class for departmental tours or other obligations <strong>and</strong> emergencies, you<br />

must advise me <strong>in</strong> advance. Please refer to “Academic Information” <strong>in</strong> the<br />

graduate catalog.<br />

Incompletes The grade of <strong>in</strong>complete is granted only <strong>in</strong> cases of serious, documented<br />

emergencies, <strong>and</strong> then only when permission has been obta<strong>in</strong>ed from the<br />

<strong>in</strong>structor, no later than one week before the f<strong>in</strong>al class meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Preparedness Be sure to have a supply of manuscript paper <strong>and</strong> pencils (with erasers!) for use<br />

<strong>in</strong> class <strong>and</strong> for written assignments.<br />

Absence due to religious observance: The Texas Tech University Catalog states that a<br />

student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day<br />

will be allowed to take an exam<strong>in</strong>ation or complete an assignment scheduled<br />

for that day with<strong>in</strong> a reasonable time after the absence. (p.49) (Note: prior<br />

notification to the <strong>in</strong>structor is no longer required.)<br />

Absence due to officially approved trips: The Texas Tech University Catalog states that the person<br />

responsible for a student miss<strong>in</strong>g class due to a trip should notify the<br />

<strong>in</strong>structors of the departure <strong>and</strong> return schedule <strong>in</strong> advance of the trip. The<br />

student may not be penalized <strong>and</strong> is responsible for the material missed. (p.48)<br />

Academic Honesty: It is the aim of the faculty of Texas Tech University to foster a spirit of<br />

complete honesty <strong>and</strong> a high st<strong>and</strong>ard of <strong>in</strong>tegrity. The attempt of students to<br />

present as their own any work that they have not honestly performed is<br />

regarded by the faculty <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration as a serious offense <strong>and</strong> renders the<br />

offenders liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension (TTU Catalog 49).<br />

ADA Statement: Any student who because of a disability may require special arrangements <strong>in</strong><br />

order to meet course requirements should contact the <strong>in</strong>structor as soon as<br />

possible to make any necessary accommodations. Student should present<br />
