Contact: ewbank@ciml.univ-mrs.fr Lab: Ewbank Aging, Metabolism, Stress, Pathogenesis, and Small RNAs in C. elegans Topic Meeting 2012 Building an integrated view of anti-fungal innate immunity Jonathan Ewbank Centre déImmunologie de Marseille-Luminy, INSERM, CNRS, Aix-Marseille Université , Marseille, France Our research focuses on how C. elegans responds to fungal infection, mainly using a natural pathogen, Drechmeria coniospora. Worms have a highly derived innate immune system, exemplified by the fact that they have no equivalent of NF-kappaB, central to immunity in many animal species. Nor do they have many of the receptors known from other species to be important for triggering host defenses. On the other hand, in common with most multicellular organisms, both plant and animal, C. elegans can produce antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that contribute to pathogen resistance. We have applied forward and reverse genetics, proteomics, biochemistry, and cell biology to dissect the signaling pathways that control the expression of two main AMP families, the structurally-related nlp and cnc genes. Our recent results have given insights into the different steps of host defense: how infection is recognized, what signaling networks transduce this information and how the innate immune response is integrated into cellular and organismal physiology.
