A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
By John McCoy
PPAGLA President
The 71st annual awards
dinner for the PPAGLA
was held March 11 at the
Sportsman’s Lodge in Studio
City. The following stories may
be embellished. No names have
been changed to protect the
innocent.
In one of the closest races for
Still Photographer of the Year,
three photographers from the
Press-Enterprise in Riverside put
a stranglehold on the points total
for the top three positions. Mark
Zaleski, Stan Lim and Terry
Pierson had been battling it out
in their newsroom
the
entire year.
Pierson was
the last man
standing, earning
PPAGLA
Still
Photographer
of the Year. Lim was a close second,
Zaleski third.
Never in the history of
PPAGLA has one newspaper
received the top three spots in
such a tight race for Still
Photographer of the Year.
Pierson attended the dinner
looking dapper in his Kangol
cap turned backward “Samuel
Jackson Style,” while sporting a
vintage short-sleeved, diamondpattern
shirt and Bermudalength
black shorts. Pierson
made a fashion statement.
According to Pierson, the statement
was, “Hey, at least I didn’t
shave my legs.”
Jack Popejoy was eloquent as
ever, overcoming adversity,
while serving as the Master of
Ceremonies. Many in the crowd
never knew that Jack had a polar
bear in his pants that night. It
seems Jack had recently
returned from a trip to
Antarctica, where he went on a
polar bear petting excursion. He
returned from the trip without
petting a bear, but had a polar
bear likeness emblazoned on a
key chain in his pocket.
Joel Lugavere did a spectacular
job procuring items for the
raffle. Items included two digital
cameras, hats, PPAGLA glasses,
Armondo Flores from Nikon presents equipment and a plaque to PPAGLA Photographer of the Year Terry Pierson
Arturo Quezada, chief photographer at KMEX.
and gift certificates for Samy’s
and Woodland Hills Camera,
and passes to Universal Studios.
The low point of the evening
occurred when Lugavere drew
his own name from the print
dryer/raffle drum and won a
Tamron lens. Lugavere was pelt-
ed by flying hats thrown by the
president, and boos from the
audience.
Eighty hats, provided by our
sponsor Tamron, were wildly
popular during the evening. The
aerodynamic quality of the hat
allowed the president to launch
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Jack Popejoy was
eloquent as ever, overcoming
adversity,
while serving as the
Master of Ceremonies.
Many in the crowd
never knew that Jack
had a polar bear in his
pants that night.
them on flights that covered 80
feet across the banquet room.
During an impromptu visit to
a table serving as HQ for Inland
Empire photographers, Mark
Zaleski complained about being
located in the back of the room.
I told him that because the
Riverside crew had a long drive
home, I wanted them to be closest
to the door so they could get
out first.
Stan Lim was nearly arrested
for attempted robbery when he
latched onto a Canon 30D. Lim
earned first place for Best
Fire Photo, the Canon
30D was designated prize
for Spot News. As Lim
left the stage with his
plaque, and check, he
jokingly tried to make off
with the camera.
Jokingly? I wonder.
Adding insult to injury,
Lim got to see his Press-
Enterprise colleagues
take home significant
hardware. Pierson got the
POY Lucite plaque while
Zaleski won a Canon 30D
for the Best Sports Photo.
David Fernandez and
Sean Browning were
nominated for an Emmy
for their production,
“PPAGLA Awards
Banquet 2007.” Although
I am not a member of the
Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences,
I am nominating them for
the award nonetheless.
These guys are a couple
phers at KNBC who put
together the projection of
all our winners. It was
moving, dramatic, and
filled with visual effects.
While I’m at it, I am
nominating Matt Benson
for a Grammy. Matt ran
the audio board, and is
the son of Entertainment
Committee Co-chair Ross
Benson. Matt brought in
a great soundtrack and hit
all the right cues.
Ever the prankster,
Delmar Watson took a
pen from his pocket and
modified the lettering
embroidered on the front
of his TAMRON hat.
Evidently, he hopes to
pursue a marketing career
by advertising feminine
hygiene products.
Shout out to da ladies
in charge at the door.
Janice Lugavere and
Candy Watson were an
imposing presence while
sporting designer evening
wear and corsages. Janice
and Candy kept the freeloaders
at bay, while welcoming
official guests
and dignitaries who
attended the gala. They
organized tickets, took in
checks, and handed out
gifts. These gals are terrific!
I love ‘em.
Injury update No. 1:
Chairman of the Board
Dan Watson blew out a
hernia while hefting
boxes of plaques into the
banquet hall. Dan was in
charge of having the
plaques made and delivered
to the dinner. Fiftyeight
wooden and Lucite
plaques were awarded
during the evening. The
combined weight of the
plaques was 300 metric
tons.
Rick Meyer received
the “Land Speed Record
for Traveling City
Streets” before the festivities
began. Rocket Rick
achieved Space Shuttle
velocity while navigating
his way to the president’s
house to pick up raffle
prizes that the big dope
left behind.
Injury update No. 2:
PPAGLA Treasurer Edna
Trunell-Simpson was fitted
with a full upper-body
cast during a visit to the
ER after the ceremonies.
Edna sustained significant
injuries to her hand,
wrist, arm and shoulder
as a result of rigorous
check writing during the
evening. Winning photographers
took home $6,650
in prize checks, in addition
to two Canon 30D
cameras, Nikon cameras
and equipment, and a
$1200 lighting kit from
MESSAGE,
from page 4
Photos by Allen Madden
Ernie Schworck is surprised with a birthday cake by President John McCoy and Bonnie
Burrow at the PPAGLA dinner. Ernie received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Lowell.
Lou Mack graciously
took the stage to introduce
Lifetime
Achievement recipient
Ernie Schworck, and then
accused Ernie of stealing
his ideas. Mack received
the award last year, and
as tradition dictates,
introduced Schworck by
relating a story about the
days when they worked
as friendly rivals.
Not everyone in attendance
received a Tamron
hat, however everyone
did receive a gift from the
Board of Directors.
Special Projects
Chairman Franklin
Smith, had silver
PPAGLA lapel pins made
for all of our guests. Past
Presidents received the
same pin, cast in gold.
Epilogue: The
PPAGLA handed out
over $18,000 in cash,
awards and prizes during
the awards banquet.
Nobody went home
empty-handed. If you
didn’t go to the dinner,
you really blew it.
ODDS & ENDS
BILL BEEBE HONORED AGAIN
Bill Beebe, past president
of PPAGLA and
recipient of the Lifetime
Achievement Award, was
inducted into the
California Outdoors Hall
of Fame on Jan. 13 at the
San Mateo International
Sportsmen’s Exposition.
The award is given to
people who have inspired
thousands of Californians
to take part in the great
outdoors and/or conservation.
Bill pioneered the
investigative story among
the nation’s outdoors
writers and also mastered
the skills of wildlife photography,
fishing and
coastal boating. His
career has had many
milestones, including a
series of stories that
uncovered corruption
As a non-profit organization,
the PPAGLA can’t
survive on dues alone.
The fact is dues cover little
more than basic operating
expenses, and
postage to send out the
newsletter and yearbook.
We just can’t get the
job done without our
sponsors. They pick up
most of the bill for our
yearbook. And the contest,
forgeddaboudit! We
could never give cash
prizes and equipment for
our contest. And while
I’m on the subject, without
sponsors we probably
couldn’t afford a banquet,
award plaques, gallery
exhibits, hats, pins,
patches, student seminars,
parking placards,
ID badges, scholarships
or a website. In fact, the
PPAGLA would struggle
to survive without the
corporations and businesses
we rely on as
friends.
What do our sponsors
between commercial netters
and the Dept. of Fish
and Game. His photo of
President John F.
Kennedy returning from a
swim in Santa Monica
Bay was nominated for a
Pulitzer Prize in 1963 and
is included in “The Best
50 Years of Life
Magazine.” As Southern
California’s dean of outdoors
writers, Beebe has
beat others to virtually
every big news story in
Southern California and
mentored dozens of outdoors
writers.
The United Anglers of
Southern California have
also awarded Bill their
highest honor for his
“commitment to protect,
restore and enhance” the
fisheries of Southern
California.
Bill Beebe
Bill served as president
of PPAGLA in 1963, and
served on the board for
many years. He worked at
Pacific Press Photos from
1947 until 1950, when he
joined the Los Angeles
Mirror (later named the
Mirror-News). When the
Mirror-News and the
L.A. Times merged in
1960, he served as a
reporter/photographer at
The public sees us as
educated professionals
who can give them advice.
They want to know what
the best brands are,
because that’s what we
use. They want to know
where the best stores are,
the Times until 1963,
when he quit and joined
the Santa Monica
Evening Outlook. There,
he edited a weekend magazine,
in addition to covering
the outdoors. He
retired from the Outlook
in 1995, but continued his
outdoors stories until the
paper closed in 1998.
During his time at the
Outlook, he also wrote an
outdoors column for the
Western Outdoor News,
where he is still listed as
associate editor.
Bill still photographs
birds in Southern
California, and he hopes
to publish them in a
book. He also shoots
hockey games — at least
the games in which his
16-year-old grandson
plays. His grandson trav-
who were among the
original founders of
PPAGLA and the
award for Lifetime
Achievement.
because that’s where we
shop. All I have to do is
point them to our website.
And when I need to
rent something, I drop
into any one of Samy’s
three locations. They love
the PPAGLA, and give us
a 50% discount on
els around the U.S. and
Canada, and was member
of last year’s national
champion California
Wave team.
But Bill might be best
known to PPAGLA members
for hosting many
fish frys, which began in
the 1950s at Paradise
Cove and went on
through the ’60s and
’70s. Fish caught by Bill
and PPAGLA Honorary
Member John Scott,
including marlin, albacore
and yellowtail, were
cooked at the party. The
last Fish Fry was held in
fall of 1998 at Paradise
Cove, hosted by Bob
Morris in honor of his
father and of Bill, whose
photos grace the walls of
the Paradise Cove.
A NOTE TO OUR SPONSORS: THANK YOU
rentals. That’s huge!
And talk about huge,
our website is exploding.
Web Meister Mike Baker
tells me that we regularly
get 10,000 hits per day.
Many of our sponsors
have links on ppagla.org.
(If you don’t have a link
on our site, contact Mike
Baker at mobaker2@hotmail.com).
Soon you
will be able to do more
than see great photography,
and enter the monthly
contest. You will be
able to upload your portfolio
for the world to see.
I’ll keep you posted on
the details when we iron
the bugs out on that one.
I mentioned our sponsors
in my President’s
Message, but I wanted to
take this opportunity to
give them a little more
ink. Thank you to all of
our loyal corporate
friends who make the
PPAGLA a success.
