Fight Cancer
with Cupcakes
If you are a full-time cake designer, someone who
just loves to bake, or a certified cakeaholic, then
this is your opportunity to make a difference in a
child's life - one cupcake at a time!
September marks National Childhood Cancer Awareness
month and registered non-profit company Cupcakes of
HOPE will be hosting South Africa's very first 'National
Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer' on Saturday,
29 September 2012.
Their aim is to raise awareness and funds for the kids affected
by this terrible disease. As part of their cancer awareness
campaign, leaflets highlighting early childhood cancer warning
signs will be handed out, because early detection saves lives!
Here as some of the signs to watch out for:
Early warning signs
• Easy bruising or bleeding
• Prolonged fever
• Change in balance or limping
• Lump or bulge
• White spots in the eyes or squinting
• Headaches for longer than a week
• Weight loss
• Aching bones and joints
So how can you get involved? You can bake and
donate cupcakes to a venue closest to you - the only
requirement is that the cupcakes are made with love.
If you are looking for ideas, four different themes have been
introduced: cupcakes with flowers; cupcakes for girls (for
example, Hello Kitty, Dora, fairies, ballerinas, and mermaids);
cupcakes for boys (for example, Ben 10, Spiderman,
Superman, springbok, rugby teams, and soccer); and
cupcakes for toddles (for example, animals, ladybirds, Mickey
Mouse, Barney, Winnie the Pooh, SpongeBob SquarePants,
and butterflies). Alternatively, for those who prefer to indulge
than bake, you can support this fantastic cause by purchasing
a cupcake for a R10 donation.
This initiative is another first for Cupcakes of
Hope! In 2011, its charity event Cupcakes 4
Kids with Cancer set a new world record for
the most cupcakes on display - a staggering
21,000, and raised R200 000 in the process!
The funds were donated to Reach for A Dream,
CANSA Vereeniging, paying the medical costs
of three cancer patients, granting special wishes
such as a family holiday for a terminally ill child,
sports memorabilia to a cancer warrior, and a
birthday party and gifts for a special 4-year-old
patient.
So let's don our aprons and get baking,
and make this National Cupcake Day 4 Kids
with Cancer the sweetest day of the year!
