New Zipline Soars to the Top!
A new activity for 2010, the zipline quickly became
a camper favorite. Courageous campers of all ages
grabbed helmets and harnesses, climbed the ladder, and
stepped off Platform 9¾ for the 200-ft ride through the
trees. Screams of delight were heard throughout camp
as participants flew through the forest. Some campers
even chose to ride the zipline blindfolded for an extra
thrill! Rocks & Ropes activities are always among the
most popular, and the zipline proved to be a strong addition
to the program. Look for more opportunities to
try the zipline in 2011!
Emily “Cappy” Henderson will
be joining us at GAC 2011 for her
second summer. As a Group Counselor,
Cappy radiates positivity and
kindness. She faces each day with
joy and optimism, and her smile is
contagious.
A junior at Ole Miss, Cappy is
studying English and Journalism.
She hopes to find a career that allows
her to continue working with
children.
In her free time, Cappy likes to go geocaching with her
friends, using GPS devices to look up coordinates to track
down hidden prizes. Cappy and her friends have been working
on a multi-staged extreme geocache for nearly 3 months!
Born and raised in Mississippi, Cappy is looking forward to
coming back to camp because it provides the opportunity for
her to meet people from all over the world. She is excited to
bond with new groups of campers and share in their experiences.
We’re excited to have Cappy back at camp for GAC
2011!
Aleksander Berg:
an all-star GAC monther
Aleksander Berg is looking forward
to being wrapped in his
5 year blanket in 2011. He attends
GAC each summer with
his younger brother, Lukas. Both
boys prefer coming to camp for a
month to maximize the fun. The
Berg family hosts a GAC chat
each year to help promote the
GAC experience to new families.
Aleksander returns to camp each
year for a Sierra summer because of the people and the activities.
His favorite memory from last summer was jetskiing
with his counselor, Tweeder. Aleksander’s favorite activity is
Sailing, and his favorite food at camp is GAC McMuffins for
breakfast. When asked how it feels to be getting his 5 year
blanket, Aleksander said, “It is an honor to have had the opportunity
to go to camp for 5 years.” We look forward to helping
Aleksander celebrate his fifth summer at GAC in 2011!
10-year GAC staff veteran, Hope “Fiji” Mirano, married Mike
“Guam” Chen (honorary GAC nickname) in a beautiful wedding
last summer. GACers from around the U.S. and the world gathered
for the amazing celebration. Two of Fiji’s bridesmaids were
friends she met at camp: Rachel “Pikachu” Cameron from New
Zealand and Amanda “Reesi” Dean from Indiana. Longtime
GAC staffer, Alexander “AZ” Cobon, traveled all the way from
Australia and did a reading at the wedding. Also in attendance
were Zippy, Special K, Sunshine, Leif Johnson, Sushi, Chelster,
Snuggles, Bridger, and Glitter. Congratulations to the Chens!
John “Bon Bon” Sobeski (GAC Staff 2000-06) was married to
Alissa Vega on October 23 in Palatine, IL. The best man, who
Bon Bon met at GAC, was David “Wingnut” Bradt (GAC Staff
2000-02). Bon Bon and Alissa are now busy moving into their
recently purchased house. Congratulations to the happy couple!
On September 25, 2010, Sandra Lopez (former GAC camper
and CIT) married Roberto Cerda in Santa Ana, California.
GACers in attendance included Ana “Yo-Yo” Lopez
(former camper and staff), Erik “Brownie” Lopez (former
staff), Sunshine, Monkey, Sandra, Roberto, Bety Garcia (11
year staff member), Maria Garcia (3 year staff member), and
Sixto Garcia.
Remembering
Grandpa Jim
The GAC family lost a great
friend in August with the
passing of “Grandpa Jim”
Lewis. A frequent visitor
to camp in the 90s and early
2000s, Grandpa Jim delighted
campers with his masterful
storytelling. TQOE, a
staff member for 17 years,
was originally brought to
camp by Grandpa Jim and
continues the storytelling tradition today.
More than one hundred friends and family members gathered
to celebrate Jim’s life in September. This Christmasthemed
memorial was a tribute to the love he shared with
the people in his life. The tables were decorated to look
like Christmas presents in honor of Jim’s likeness to Santa.
Grandpa Jim will always be remembered at GAC, where audio
of him telling stories can still be heard in the camp vans. We’re
thankful for the time he shared with us at GAC. If you would
like to donate to the Jim Lewis Scholarship Fund to assist libraries
and schools with funding artist enrichment programs,
visit www.dreamshapers.org. Jim’s Campfire Stories CD will
be offered in rememberance for donations of $25 or more.
After another wonderful summer experience, veteran GAC
campers Alejandra Olvera (9) and Arturo Olvera (11) are
back home this Fall at the American School in Mexico
City. Alejandra is enjoying 4th grade, loves tennis and
kick boxing, and is learning to play the piano. Arturo is
excelling in 5th grade and, building on his GAC mountain
biking experience, has been biking on the weekends with
his father. He’s also learning to play the guitar. Both siblings
love surfing and water skiing in Acapulco, and future
GAC camper, little sister Daniela (3) went water skiing
with the family for the first time just recently. Mom
and Papá are always amazed at how much the kids grow
and mature at camp, returning more confident, more responsible
and more independent. GAC is a great learning
and growing experience for all kids, but gives something
special to international kids like ours. Even though we
come from different cultures, languages and countries, our
children learn that we share the same values. And GAC
reinforces our values, helping our kids to learn and grow.
My favorite memory was archery. I got a bullseye! It
was really awesome!!
REPORT
Aside from all the fun
activities that GAC
has to offer, one of
my favorite events
at GAC is the carnival!
It is a good time
to bond with people in
your cabin or another
cabin. There are various
fun games to play, where you can win tickets that
may be used to get popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones,
prizes and much more! You can also get your face, arms,
and legs painted on, which I always look forward to!
Katherine Gisel
I was happy to be with horses and to do a lot of horse-back
riding. I was proud to take care about these nice animals
by cleaning and brushing them. The most impressive event
was the Halloween Dance. I liked it because cool, fancy
costumes we made, and there was energetic dancing and
modern music (it reminded me rock which I’m fan of).
That was awesome! I want to come back to GAC again
and get my 3 year banner.
Oleg Kozinets (Russia)
Garrett and Ashley Reilly
are already looking forward
to Session 3 at GAC in 2011.
They are both busy with
school and sports. Garrett
is playing both soccer and
tackle football this Fall. His
football team, the St. Agnes
STAGS, is undefeated and
un-scored upon this season.
The STAG soccer team made
it to the second round playoffs
this year. Ashley continues to enjoy playing for the West
Chester United Travel soccer team. However, it hasn’t
kept her from climbing trees, rocks and hills as she remembers
her great rock climbing experience at GAC. This Fall,
Garrett and Ashley visited the University of Notre Dame
and thought of Manny Vezie and his days there. Both Garrett
and Ashley look forward to earning their 3 year banners
this summer. They hope to see many familiar faces
at GAC.
Josephine “Joy” Williams returns July 2011 to Gold Arrow,
and liked horseriding and Jet Skis.
Be Creative!
We know that everybody loves Poetry Corner and all the
songs during Appreciation Campfire, so we are calling on all
budding poets and singers to start writing. We are looking
for you to rewrite the lyrics to a popular song so it becomes
a song about GAC and for some beautiful poetry to rival that
of GAC Poetry Corner founder, Shiloh. Email or mail us your
poems and songs. We will be placing a selection of the best
submissions on our website. Winners will receive a small prize!
Share GAC with Friends
Host a GAC Chat!
Parents, do you want to invite friends to your home to learn
about GAC? People who have never been to camp usually
are nervous, so meeting a camp representative and getting their
questions answered helps make them more comfortable with the
idea. If you’d like more information about hosting a GAC Chat,
go to: www.goldarrowcamp.com/hostinfo
Refer a Friend: Tell Friends about Camp and Win Prizes!
Simply click on the “Refer a Friend” link in either the Parent
or Camper section of our website, and fill in your friend’s contact
information. We’ll send them a camp brochure and a letter
letting them know that you asked us to send them information
about GAC.
If your friend ends up enrolling in camp, your camper will win
fun prizes at the first morning assembly of their session:
1st Friend: $20 Gift Certificate for the Camp Store
2nd Friend: GAC Beach Towel
3rd Friend: GAC Headlamp
4th Friend: Soda Party in Sunspot with your cabin
The family who refers the most new campers to GAC 2011 will
win a FREE two-week camp session in 2012! Referrals will be
attributed to the family each new camper identifies upon enrolling.
Last year’s Refer a Friend overall winner was Ben Bookstaver,
who referred six friends to GAC! According to his mom,
Lisa Hernand, “Ben loved being silly with his friends and counselors.
He says it was the best two weeks of his life! Ben came
home with a newfound sense of confidence and self-reliance,
and an ability to find joy in the simple things (and things that
don’t involve screens). He and the six friends he referred came
back from camp bursting with stories. They had a tight bond
from many years of knowing one another before camp, but the
two weeks spent together at camp is what really cemented their
relationships. It was a magical time for Ben and his friends!”
Who will be this year’s Refer a Friend grand prize winner? Start
sharing GAC with your friends, and it could be you!

Happiness at GAC and Beyond
By Audrey “Sunshine” Monke
“Anyone who says that Disneyland is the happiest place on
Earth must never have been to Gold Arrow Camp.”
- 2010 Camper
Have you ever noticed that some people are happier than
others? Did you know that, even if you’re not one of those
naturally upbeat people, you can make yourself happier?
One thing people like about GAC is how happy they feel
when they are at camp. Some campers and staff even describe
GAC as their “happiest place on Earth.” While
we love being a place that makes people happy, we
also hope that campers will continue to use the “happiness
habits” we practice at GAC after they get home.
Happiness Habits for Camp and Home
Gratitude
Feeling and expressing thanks for the good things in our lives
is a great way to feel happy. Why not add a topic of “something
I’m thankful for” to your family’s dinner conversation?
Optimism
“I can” has always been our phrase of choice when
approaching challenging activities at GAC. By having a
positive outlook, even when we’re nervous, we increase
our odds of success. Another important aspect of optimism
is learning from our failures and mistakes. Saying
positive things, both in our heads and aloud, helps
us be happier. Next time you’re facing a difficult situation,
like a hard test, be sure to say nice things to yourself!
Acts of Kindness
Helping, sharing, giving, and saying kind things to others
makes people happier. Our GAC “Spirit Eggs” represent
specific things that campers do that show a giving spirit.
What can you do at home to keep your “GAC Spirit” alive?
Why not leave a nice note for your parents, brother, or sister?
Or maybe you can do a chore that you aren’t asked to
do? You will feel happier when you make others happy!
We hope the happiness habits practiced at camp will become
lifelong habits for our campers, and we look forward to another
happy summer in 2011!
PhotojouRnalism
Each summer, campers can choose Photojournalism as their activity
during Free Time. Here are a few samples of stories campers
wrote last summer.
6th year at GAC by Gal Goldstein, Cabin 29
For my 6th year at GAC It has been one
of the best years, from the counselors to
the activities. My last year as a camper
has been the most fun I have ever had.
My cabin mates are just amazing and
fun to be with. The best activity I’ve had
has been canoeing. It was just too much
fun making Kanga and Sherpa capsize
after my boat had capsized. Then everyone
was capsizing and having a great
time. Shaver was fun with me and Dallyn trying back flips on
the wake boards and throwing the craziest trick possible on the
wake board. Getting to have Sherpa and Sensei as my counselors
has just been the best, especially since I got to hang out with all
the CIT’s that I knew as campers/cabin mates. I’m going to miss
being a camper and hope that next year I can come back as a
CIT and enjoy another year at Gold Arrow Camp. I hope that all
the counselors I know come back and enjoy next year with me.
Sailing by Meredith Hunter, Cabin 11
One of the great activities at Gold Arrow
Camp is sailing. It’s really fun because
you get to have the wind in your face and
water around you. In sailing turning is
tacking. You push the tiller towards the
sail. The tiller is the long wooded stick
that’s attached to the rudder. The rudder is
a flat wooden thing that is in the water.
A boom is the thing attached to the sail
but it’s under it. When I was sailing we
met a sailor sailing up the lake. She didn’t know what to do, so
she tacked in front of me. She said, “Hey girl, watch that boom!
Watch that boom! Watch that boom! Hey girl, watch that boom!
Watch that boom! Watch that boom! Now, duck!”
Life at G.A.C!!! by Contesssa Popeil, Cabin 1
Life at camp is pretty simple... if you
are a “bear” (age 6-9) you wake up
at around 7:00am and get to go to
sleep at 9:00pm sharp. If you are a
“tiger”(ages 10-12). you wake up at
around 7:15am and the lights are out
at 9:30pm. Also, if you are a “lion”
(ages 13-14) you would have to
wake up between the times of 7:00
to the times of 7:45. Lions get to stay
up the latest(at 10:00 p.m.) at camp.
Your day will start by having a delicious breakfast, then you will
either have two short activities or one long activity. At 12:00p.m.
we have a yummy lunch. After lunch, you have REST HOUR!!!
At rest hour you can take scheduled showers or just relax. Finally,
you have your last two or one long activity. After that, you are
free to go back to your cabin and do your own thing for about 15
min. then you will head over to your freetime activity that you
will sign up at breakfast or lunchtime. Later after freetime, you
will go to your campfire, which happens to be a couple feet away
from your cabin. You will eat roasted marshmallows or popcorn.
That is basically a day at Gold Arrow. I would recommend Gold
Arrow to any child (ages 6-14). In conclusion, G.A.C is great!
Ask the Chipmunk
Dear Chipmunk,
I am in Session 1 this year, and I am kind of worried because last
year was my first time at GAC and I went with my best friend
(her 3rd year), and she helped as a sort of guide. This year, she
isn’t going and I am kind of worried that it might be a bit lonely
at camp seeing as she won’t be there and all my friends from
last year are in Session 2. I am sort of good at making friends
but I am not sure I will be able to this year so I am worried.
Sincerely,
Worried about Returning
Dear Worried,
Thanks for your email! I love hearing from
campers! I know it seems scary going to
camp without your friend, but lots of campers
come to GAC and don’t know anyone.
Even some of our first-year
campers are coming this year
and don’t know anyone else
at camp. Being a second year
camper, you’ll be able to help new kids get
used to camp. Your counselors will help you
get to know the other kids in your cabin and
make sure you are making friends. I think, even
when you meet people from other places besides your home
town, you’ll have stuff to talk about. You can talk about sports,
hobbies, music, camp activities, funny stories, riddles, and lots
of other things. Your counselors will help you think up topics if
you’re having trouble. So, don’t worry, because I know you’ll
have a lot of fun at GAC this year. For most kids, they have even
MORE fun their second year, because they know what to expect
and know a lot of the staff already. Be sure to let your counselor
or another adult at camp (like Sunshine or Monkey) know
if you are having any worries or need any help with anything.
See you at GAC!
Happy Camping,
