NAPLAN
NAPLAN Student reports have been received at the school but under Government direction, must be kept secure
until they are signed off by the Federal Minister on 14th September 2012. Distribution of student reports to parents,
under the direction of the Government, must commence on Monday 17th September and is to be completed by
Friday 21st September, 2012. In accord with Government directions, St Stanislaus’ College will forward all NA-
PLAN reports to Years 7 and 9 families next week.
While the school is not in a position currently to communicate any specifi c NAPLAN results, both Year 7 and Year
9 have performed very impressively relative to the national averages. Th is should be a great encouragement to all
boys and their families. Th e results achieved by the school should be another fi llip for our staff in terms of reward
for their very hard work. Th ere are 35 students currently in Year 9 who have joined our College community since
the NAPLAN tests were conducted in Year 7 2010. For the school to absorb all of these students and still produce
impressive school averages, relative to the nation’s, is a considerable achievement. Th ere will be a more detailed
report in the vacation circular, given the current restrictions on reporting and the fact that there is no newsletter
next week in the fi nal week of term. Very well done to everyone involved, really good news gives everyone a lift .
THE IRWIN FAMILY TRUST
Th ere is currently $15,332.96 in the Irwin Family Trust account. Lorraine Irwin will be here on Wednesday for a
morning tea, where we hope to make a presentation to her of these funds. In the time remaining before Wednesday,
our community will try to lift the total to $17,000. To that end there will be a Muft i Day for all students on Monday
17th September. Students who come dressed in other than school uniform on Monday will make a gold coin donation
with all proceeds going to the Irwin Family Trust. Year 12 will run a BBQ on Monday during the annual lunch
time Brain -v- Brawn rugby fi xture, where again all proceeds will go towards the Trust. Year 12 will also ask for a
gold coin donation from any student seeking to watch the Brain -v- Brawn game to further swell monies held by the
Trust. In the event that any person or group is in a position to make a further donation to the Trust, we ask that they
do so before Wednesday, so that these funds can be incorporated into the Trust funds to be given to Lorraine Irwin
on Wednesday at the school . Persons wanting to make a donation are welcome to do so at the Business Offi ce, or
may make an electronic transfer to the following account BSB: 064-786 Account No. 282080104 and clearly annotate
in the description box Irwin Trust with also the surname of the person making the donation. Cheques made
out to the Irwin Family Trust may also be forwarded to the school. Let us make a concerted eff ort across the full
school community, to increase the funds we are able to provide to Lorraine and to Lorraine and Nathan’s two young
sons. All donations made thus far have been appreciated and a special thank you to those who have continued to
make donations on a regular basis since Nathan’s death. Your steadfastness is very much appreciated.
MUFTI DAY
Th ere is a gold coin donation Muft i Day on Monday 17th September with full details outlined above in the section
headed Th e Irwin Family Trust.
GRADUATION OF YEAR 12 AND YEAR 11 INVOLVEMENT
Th e Graduation of Year 12 is set down for Saturday evening 22nd September 2012. Th e Graduation begins with a
Mass which will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St Michael and St John commencing at 6.15pm and the Gradation
Dinner follows in the Performing Arts Centre at 7.30pm. Traditionally, both the Mass and the Dinner are
supported by Year 11 students in particular, who supply much of the singing and music at the Mass and a lot of
the preparation and running around for the Dinner. For many years a signifi cant proportion of boarders have remained
at the school aft er the end of Term, to assist with the Graduation and similarly a large number of day boys
have attended the Mass and dinner. Please encourage your son to assist this year. In terms of Year 11 boarders, the
school will continue to provide boarding accommodation and supervision for Year 11 boarders who remain until
they leave on Sunday 23rd September. Th e school also seeks the support of other students in Years 7 - 10 who can
assist with singing and music at the Mass. Th ere is a part of the celebration at the Mass where it is imperative that we
have representatives from every form present in the Cathedral. Please encourage your son to attend and to provide
their names to the Headmaster’s Secretary early next week. Students attending the Mass need to be attired in Dress
uniform and be excellently presented.
FEAST OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL
On Tuesday 18th September, the College will celebrate the Feast of St Vincent de Paul. Th e actual Feast day is on
Th ursday 27th September but the College is on vacation at this time. St Vincent de Paul is of course the founder
of the Congregation that has operated St Stanislaus’ College since 1889. St Vincent had a great commitment to
the disadvantaged and each year, when we celebrate his Feast, we recommit to that Mission. A full school Mass
will be celebrated in the PAC from 12 midday. Persons are invited to join us for this celebration and we ask that
any guests are seated in the mezzanine level by 12 midday. Following the Mass, Year 12 will have their annual
luncheon with staff and receive their Old Boys’ tie in a gathering in the College Refectory. Th e remainder of the
school will be provided with lunch and a drink from the Indoor Recreation Venue canteen.
SPORTS AWARDS
Th e annual Winter Sports Awards, inclusive of Sportsman of the year prizes, will take place in an Assembly on
Wednesday 19th September. Th e Assembly will commence at 9.30am and should be concluded by 11am. Parents
who would like to attend are welcome to do so, with seats reserved for guests on the mezzanine level. Any guests
should be seated by 9.30am. Th ere will be classes following the Assembly and up to 3.25pm Th ursday 20th September.
PLEASE DO NOT GIVE PERMISSION for your sons to leave early.
THE BATTLE OF MARATHON
On the 12th September, 490BC the Battle of Marathon took
place in Marathon, Greece between two Greek city states (Athens
and Plataea) and the Persians Empire. Th e Greek army was
commanded by Miltiades and Callimachus with roughly 10,000-
11,000 infantry known as Hoplites. Modern historians have
estimated that Datis and Artaphernes Persian army contained
anywhere from 25,000-300,000 infantry (primarily arches), supported
by 1,000 cavalry. Th e two armies faced each other for fi ve
days at a distance of roughly 1,500 meters on the plains of Marathon,
with the Persian armies back to the sea.
Th e Athenians were waiting for Spartan reinforcements, who had
to wait until a religious peace festival was over before sending
reinforcements to defeat the Persian army. It is most likely that
the Greeks marched towards the Persians until 200 meters (eff ective
range for arches) and then broke formation and sprinted at
the Persians. Th e Persians were caught off guard where the Persian
fl anks quickly collapsed. Th e Persians started to fl ee back to
their ships, still being chased by the Greeks, and some Persians
drowned in a nearby swamp as they tried to escape. Roughly
6,400 Persians died along with seven ships captured, and 203
Greeks died. Th e Battle of Marathon contributed to Darius I’s
failure to take Greece.
STANNIES SUDOKU
This week: Medium.
The goal of Sudoku is to fi ll all the blank squares in the grid with the correct
numbers. Using logic and deduc on, you can always work out which numbers
go in which squares.
All columns, rows and 3x3 blocks must contain all the numbers 1-9, however
they can be in any order, and they do not have to sum up to anything. Columns,
rows and 3x3 blocks must not contain any duplicate numbers.
DEBATING
Congratulation to the Year 7 and Year 8 Debating team that competed
in the recent CSDA competition at La Salle, Lithgow. Our
Year 7 team, comprising Izaac Molenkamp, Dominic McCrossin
and Nicholas Sloane did exceptionally well winning two out
of their three debates. Each speaker showed poise, organization
and fl air and they are to be congratulated on their outstanding
performance. Out of eight teams they placed second overall. Our
Year 8 team included: Lachlan Barrett, Jacob Smith and Jarrod
Mead. Th e boys competed in three debates and were narrowly
beaten in each one. However, they all enjoyed the experience and
found they learnt a great deal from the process. I was exceptionally
proud of the way the boys represented the College and themselves
on the day.
On Monday, 17th September a Year 9 and 11 Debating team will
compete in the Senior CSDA competition at James Sheahan in
Orange. Year 9 is made up of Keegan Bringolf, Nicholas Forbutt,
Patrick Fisher and Jack Mitchell. Our Year 11 team includes Scott
Lindsay, John Melville and Hywel Blake. We wish the boys the
best of luck and remind them that they need to meet Ms Burgess
out the front of the College at 7:25am sharp in full school uniform
including their blazer. Remember to bring a packed lunch.
ATHLETICS
Th is week saw 35 athletes travel to the Homebush International
Athletics Centre to represent Stannies at the annual ISA Athletics
Carnival. We are currently placed in Division 2 along with eight
other schools. Division 1 consists of another nine schools, so altogether
our boys were competing against seventeen other school
in order to gain progression to the next level, which is the CIS
(Combined Independent Schools) Carnival, also at Homebush.
As has been the case in previous years we had the boys who
participate in the fi rst bracket of events leave Stannies Monday
evening to stay at the Formule1 Motel in Wentworthville, before
moving on the next morning to Homebush for the 8:45am start.
Th e remaining athletes left Stannies under the expert guidance
of Mrs Reilly and Mr Jessett at 6:15am to arrive at Homebush at
10am in time for the start of the second bracket of events. By the
end of the day seven of our lads had secured selection to the CIS
team: Patrick Logan (U18+ discus), Samuel Harris (U15 400m),
Mitchell Oxley (U16 800m), Darcy Christie-Johnson (U15 Discus),
Anei Dut (U17 High Jump), Simon Slack-Smith (U14 Shot
Put) and Daniel Vaughan (U14 Javelin, Triple Jump and Long
Jump). Daniel Vaughan, in particular, acquitted himself as an
outstanding athlete, coming 1st in fi ve events and breaking the
long jump record for the U14s. Next week the college will be providing
transport to Homebush for the CIS carnival, departing at
6:30am. Th e return time should be about 7pm. If you have any
queries as parents/guardians you can contact Mr Weber on 0411
SPRING SPORT 2012
Spring Sport has been an enjoyable experience for all involved.
Being surrounded by students who are showing such a positive
attitude, towards their peers, games and their willingness to help
out is a pleasure.
Last week we had smaller numbers due to Year 10 away on work
experience, and also a number of Year 11’s on work placement.
Touch, Basketball and Dodgeball all had good numbers, and all
games were fi ercely contested.
Th e Spring Season has provided a great opportunity for students
to get involved in a variety of sports. It has been lovely to see siblings
playing together, as well as the younger and older students
of the school mixing together. May the last week be enjoyed by all.
SPRING SPORT WEEK 2
FOOTBALL/SOCCER
Due to many boys being away on the weekend, either on home
leave, work experience or work placement, we could not run soccer
in week 3. However, the boys who did arrive were dispersed
with the touch football crew and dodgeball in the IRC. It was enjoyable
to learn the rules and have a game of something diff erent,
but we are all looking forward to a good turn-up for soccer this
Saturday. See you all there.
DODGEBALL
Results
Game 1: Spongebob’s Assassins (3) vs Patrick’s Assassins (4)
Game 2: Mr Crab’s Assassins (1) vs Patrick’s Assassins (2)
Game 3: Mr Crab’s Assassins (1) vs Spongebob’s Assassins (2)
Game 4: Spongebob’s Assassins (2) vs Patrick’s Assassins (1)
Game 5: Mr Crab’s Assassins (1) vs Patrick’s Assassins (2)
Game 6: Mr Crab’s Assassins (0) vs Spongebob’s Assassins (3)
Game 7: Spongebob’s Assassins (3) vs Patrick’s Assassins (0)
Once again the IRC was the place to be on Saturday with the
dodgeball competition as exciting as ever. Th e talent and the tactics
displayed by the boys in their attempt to hit each other with
balls were fantastic to watch. Th e shy aloof tactic, the hit them as
hard as you can tactic, the sit on the ground and torment tactic
and the try to be invisible tactic seemed to be the most appealing.
Th e boys tended to roll in at their leisure this week but eventually
our numbers were high enough to have three teams battle it

out. Th e names of the teams this week had a certain Spongebob
theme. Th e games were extremely close but the Spongebob’s Assassins
seemed to emerge as the overall victors. I look forward
to our fi nal week of competition this Saturday. All students are
welcome. Play commences at 9.00am. See you there.
The World 13
Th e Spring Season Basketball Competition intensifi ed this week
and I was privileged to watch some very fi ne games. Th ank you
to all the boys for their participation throughout the three weeks
of competition thus far. Some houses are still struggling to fi eld
a full team of competitors, so, if you feel like a good game of basketball
this weekend then why not come along and support your
house.
Congratulations to all teams. A special commendation to St Josephs
House once again who were able to fi eld a very strong team.
In a nail bitting fi nish St Vincents / St Justins went head to head
with St Xaviers / St Josephs in an enthralling match that remained
tied throughout most of the game. Th e St Xaviers / St Josephs
team were missing some of their gun players this week and the St
Justins / St Vincents combination were able to take full advantage
of this and steal victory by a single point in the closing minutes
of the game.
St Josephs proved themselves to be the equal of a St Johns / St
Charles combined team. Aft er a full forty minutes of basketball
the game concluded with a 28 point draw.
Th e fi nal match of the day pitted a St Josephs / St Johns combination
against the world (well against St Justins, St Xaviers, St Vincents
and St Charles). Th e combination team, lead by the champions
from St Johns House, were far too strong for the World team
defeating them 37 – 13.
Players of the week were Aiden Rankin and William Wood, well
done lads.
Th ank you to the boys who refereed each game.
TOUCH FOOTBALL REPORT
Last week’s touch football saw the junior Year 7 and 8s take on the
experienced Year 9 boys. Th e juniors were ably led by Sam Condon,
Daniel Woods, Harry and Connor Brown. Th ey displayed
great tenacity and skill and had the game in their grasp until some
fi ne eff orts by Andrew Manaia, Jack Fleetwood and Blake Dennis
managed to snatch victory for Year 9 from the jaws of defeat. Well
done to all players and we are looking forward to another round
of exciting touch footy this weekend.
