Founded as the Golden <strong>Wheel</strong> aWards in 1997, the urban <strong>Wheel</strong> aWards Were developed to recoGnize and<br />

honor diversity in the auto industry. some 350 people braved a major snoWstorm to attend the First proGram,<br />

held on jan. 9, 1997, at the renaissance club in doWntoWn detroit.<br />

the Golden <strong>Wheel</strong> aWards Were renamed the urban <strong>Wheel</strong> aWards on jan. 7, 1999, to better reFlect the<br />

mission and purpose oF on <strong>Wheel</strong>s incorporated. over the years, the venues have chanGed to accommodate ever-<br />

increasinG audiences, and cateGories have been added to reFlect proGress in diversity. the FiFteenth annual urban<br />
