GENERAL DESCRIPTION
ULSTEIN COM ® is an integrated IP based communication system for marine applications. The system distributes signals from
computers, telephone, television, radio, monitoring cameras and other sources throughout the ship. Each TV user has the ULSTEIN
COM ® portal, an effective and flexible platform for both entertainment and information. A simple onscreen menu gives the
opportunity to choose among digital TV and radio channels. TV programmes can be watched up to 24 hours after broadcast. The
solution also allows for shore-to-ship information and access to safety information.

PABX AND TELEPHONE
The PABX unit combines IP, digital and
analog internal telephones and external
lines. The system has interfaces for
inputs from external equipment like
VSAT, GSM transceivers and Inmarsat. As
part of the PABX is also a wireless DECT
telephone system with roaming function
which gives mobility during conversation
for the user. For this system is also
available a paging unit for transmitting
alarms to DECT wireless users.
PA/LOUDHAILER
A digital PA system is integrated with
PABX (intercom/telephony) and speaker
loops are running separately on standard
fire resistant cables. The ULSTEIN COM ®
PA system normally receives “Fire
Alarm” and “General Alarm” signals from
the alarm system and distributes these
around the vessel through the PA
speakers. This comes in addition to GA
bells directly from fire system, and in
total the two systems are mutually
redundant. The PA system is normally
separated in three zones; Loudhailing,

cabins and public area. Every telephone
permitted to do so
may page the PA system.
LAN
The ULSTEIN COM ® telephone and
infotainment signals are distributed
through centralized (star network) LAN
switches (DNV approved). Cabling based
on 1G bandwidth The LAN supports QoS
for differentiation traffic types (priority
of telephone), VLAN segretation,
multicast IPTV traffic for bandwidth
effciency and traffic management
(bandwith limitation). The LAN switches
are fully administrable for local or
remote service.
IPTV SYSTEM
ULSTEIN COM® distributes digital
television to end user locations using an
IPTV gateway connected to stabilized
TVRO antenna. The IPTV system
includes reception of 3 satellite
transponder frequencies by default, this
can be increased to 6 (giving at least
10-20 channels). Standard satellite TV
With ULSTEIN COM ® , the crew will have
access to a flexible entertainment
platform for their added enjoyment and
well-being. The crew can also watch
recorded TV programmes up to 24 hours
after broadcast. All TV and radio
channels are digital.
Transmissions from selected shipboard
monitoring cameras can be made
available to the IPTV network viewers.
SAFETY
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
receivers can be connected to an
integrated MPEG2 encoder (this is used
for either CCTV camera signals or TV
channels). The system supports both
Standard Definition TV (SDTV, MPEG2)
and High Definition TV (HDTV, MPEG4).
Radio is also distributed digitally to end
user.
CCTV
The CCTV system has cameras,
controllers and monitors connected to a
matrix of various sizes (input/output).
As an alternative, the CCTV system can
also be digital cameras with a server and
client pc’s replacing matrix and
controllers.
INFOTAINMENT
The information and entertainment
system includes TV programs avail
able at any time. A portal gives the user
access to useful services that includes
one-to-all messaging, Safety video
(option), and a list of camera views
(option).
Ulstein puts safety first, and through
ULSTEIN COM ® , all aboard will have an
efficient and easy-to-access channel for
safety information. Crew and guests can
watch safety videos from their own
cabins.
Through ULSTEIN COM®, everyone
aboard, or key personnel, can receive
important information to do their jobs
well and efficiently. This may include
direct information from the shipowners
or others ashore, or information such as
helicopter departures or other shipboard
activities.
