Saturdays on Marshall Way
Not so long ago, Marshall Way shone as a star
stroll for Downtown walkers. If Stuart Black
of Pangea Gallery and other proprietors along
the street have their way, it will again become a
top destination for shoppers rather than just a
charming byway off 5th Avenue.
several stores have begun collaborating on
saturday-afternoon patio presentations in
the spacious walkway before pangea, calling
the event saturdays on marshall. merchants
set up tabletops with samples of products
or brochures, jewelry vendors spread their
sparkling wares, and sometimes wine and
appetizers are offered. An open-air artist might
be dabbing at a canvas as passersby savor
aromatic samples of rare perfumes.
in essence, the patio allows vendors to bid
a cheerful and low-pressure hello to those who
might otherwise simply walk by or even miss
a storefront. saturdays on marshall, 1 p.m. to
5 p.m., also creates a memorable experience
for attendees. For example, a band performed
during the Fiesta bowl Artwalk and collectible
cars were displayed on the patio and street in
late January. on valentine’s day, occasions by
design—a jewelry, artwork and accessory shop
across the street—plans to take the lead on
an “adult date” production, and a high schoolartist
exhibit is planned in march.
the concept may be simple, but it’s
working, says black. “thursday evenings
[during Artwalk] were probably our busiest
times, but now saturday is our top day.
eventually, we’d like to get participation from
the whole street.”
tea party
other original participants of saturdays
on marshall include palavela homes, tea
gschwendner (tea Celebrations), scent Floral
& events, and soolia perfumes. “there has
been a lot more traffic flow and people buying
things—shoppers rather than lookers,” says
ryan o’meara, a former olympic ice skater,
who recently launched palavela home, a design
showroom that also offers couture window
treatments and custom upholstery. “it’s really
spreading the word. the street is going through
such a change.”
peter mason, of soolia perfumes, brings
an array of samples to saturday’s events.
he sprays scents on tester strips for patrons
to contemplate before deciding if they’d like
a body spritz. “i often use rare and costly
essential oils, such as agarwood and white
water lily. these and other expensive oils are
reserved by the major commercial perfume
companies for their top-of-the-line perfumes,”
he explains. Along with his own line, mason
creates custom scents, which can require 30
to 40 ingredients, and an all-natural hairspray.
soolia is available through pangea and the loft
(in the kiva Center on 5th Avenue).
enthusiasm for marshall way overflows
at tea Celebrations. the new tea shop is
moving to a larger space nearer 5th Avenue
in February—and soon to be renamed tea
gschwendner, after europe’s premier tea
retailer. “we’ll be one of only two stores in the
united states representing gschwendner,” says
russ graf, who co-owns the enterprise with
his wife, Cheryl. the new store, outfitted with
high-end cabinetry from germany, will offer 180
tins of loose-leaf teas available for pre-tasting
and will stage tea 101 workshops featuring
the preparation, ceremony and history of teas,
which “are a lot like wine,” says russ. (look for
the grand opening in march.)
scent Floral & events, which shares an
interior courtyard and space with pangea,
has exciting plans as well. in February,
the florist will present a variety of “wine
& design” courses, devised for those who
want to learn the art of fresh-floral design
while enjoying a glass of vino and a unique
networking opportunity.
Since its kickoff in early December,
Saturdays on Marshall has come
a long way in a very short time,
demonstrating the power of creativity
and cooperation. For information on
how to be a part of the action, contact
