A Note from Dennis Fraise
Greetings to everyone,
To quote the Grateful Dead; “What a long strange trip
it’s been” and I can’t think of a better group of people to
have been on the trip with than the great members of the
Professional Photographers of Iowa .
I’d like to start by thanking Toni for a great year of
leadership and friendship . To the entire board, a job well
done as we close the books on another highly successful
year for the PPI . A very special thank you to our Executive Director Chris who is the glue
that holds everything together .
Most of all our success is a tribute to you the members of the PPI . Our spirit of
friendship, cooperation, fun and our can do attitude has placed the PPI at the forefront
of state associations . At a time many associations are struggling we are thriving .
Despite the economic downturn the Professional Photographers of Iowa are in perhaps
the best financial shape in our history . We have worked diligently over the past few years
to cut expenses, hold membership cost and increase member benefits .
If you have not read Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson I suggest you get a
copy today . The only thing we can be certain of in our industry is more change . Today’s
PPI is a nimble organization not afraid to make changes and try new things .
Our new logo and website are examples of some of the recent changes we’ve
undertaken to keep our association fresh . You can look for more changes in the future as
we continue to grow and adapt to our every changing industry .
The very best thing you can do is become involved in your association . You’ll find
volunteering an incredibly worthwhile endeavor and make a whole new set of wonderful
friends .
I can promise you that we will have fun this year . So work hard and don’t forget to
take time for what’s important in life, family and friends . Make plans now to attend the
Fall Seminar November 1st and 2nd our featured speakers will be Kirk Voclain and John
Hartman .
I’m excited to be your president (and a little nervous) but I have a great group of past
presidents and board members to help guide the way . Remember most of all this is your
association and working together we can continue our success . Don’t hesitate to contact
me if you have an idea, problem or question I’d love to hear from you .
Best wishes,
Dennis Fraise
Meet Some of Our Members
“Wedding Photographer Weds Wedding Planner” was the headline when Paul
and Nicole Kestel tied the knot on December 31, 2003 . Paul and Nicole met
at their church college group while Paul was studying photography at Hawkeye
Community College . Paul started training Nicole on the basics of photography .
Paul enjoyed his position as a Digital Media Specialist at McKenna Pro Lab in
Waterloo, IA . Nicole was a Honeymoon Specialist at a local travel agency as well
as the Wedding Coordinator at their church . The couple enjoyed photographing
part-time for family and friends . It wasn’t long before other couples heard about the
couple and requested them to photograph their special day drawn by the artistic
quality of their work and the couple’s personality . As Nicole learned more about photography, Paul noticed she had
a creative eye as well and made Nicole his main assistant . The couple went full time with their photography studio,
Catchlight Imaging in Waterloo, IA in January of 2008 . The Philosophy of Catchlight Imaging is that photography
should be simple, fun, & artistic and our work should bring glory to God . This means bringing out the unique God
given personality of an individual . Our style of photography is very current and illustrative . Their first full-time year,
they photographed 27 weddings, as well as many babies, children, families, and seniors . The couple has enjoyed
posting photos from theie profession and personal life on both their website www .mycatchlightimaging .com and
blog www .catchlightimaging .blogspot .com . They also enjoy being a member of WPPI and PPI and attending
conferences to get to know other photographers, print competition, and learn new things . Paul and Nicole make
a great team in all areas of their life including photography, serving at their church, in their marriage, and in being
parents . Paul and Nicole Kestel enjoy spending time with their son, Kolby age 4 and daughter, Bailey age 2 . Kolby
and Bailey already say they want to become photographers like daddy and mommy when they grow up . They are
often caught in the studio with their bright orange Vtech Digital Camera posing and photographing one another .
Practice makes perfect, right!
I always knew even as a little girl that I wanted to be a photographer . I always had
a camera, capturing vacations with my family and high school life for yearbook . I was
so excited for the opportunity to attend Hawkeye College in Waterloo and I graduated
in 2003 with my majors emphasizing portraiture and photojournalism . I worked as a
staff photographer for the Waterloo Courier for two years afterwards before I decided
to move back home to Burlington and start up my own studio with a non traditional
approach to photography .
Using my background and passion in photojournalism, I began my career mainly
shooting weddings and LOVED it, and still do! I worked out of my home for two years
before my husband and I renovated on old machine shop into an upscale studio . We
worked for a year renovating and tailoring the studio to our growing needs . We opened
the studio in July of 2006 and we have been growing ever since .
Now our studio has two wonderful employees, Patsy and Jaime . Patsy handles
customer relations and sales and Jaime is our talented graphic artist . We feel truly
blessed to have each other to work with, especially since finding out the most difficult
part of running a business is finding great employees and managing their daily
activities .
Today our studio photographs babies and children, seniors, families and weddings .
We are known for our documentary wedding style and lifestyle portraiture when it comes to capturing the essence
of our children and families .
It has always been my dream to be a photographer and what an incredible blessing for this to be my lifetime career
and what an honor to get to know so many wonderful people and capture such special, intimate moments in their
lives .
We, as board of directors, received an email from Helen Yancy, PEC Chairperson, as to the re-districting of the
PPA Competition Districts . As of 2011 we will be re-districted as the map below indicates . There are many
details to work out as to the print competitions themselves in each district . None of that information is
available at this time . As we get new and more information from PEC and the North Central District, we will
certainly pass it along to you, our members .
For 2010, we will be districted with Wisconsin . Which is a decision that was made this early spring between
Iowa and Wisconsin boards . This
districting was also approved by
PEC just weeks before this new
re-districting came into play .
We hope, as a board, that you
our Iowa members will support
the Regional Districting with
Wisconsin for 2010 and send
your prints for the affiliated
judging . The winter convention
in Wisconsin will be held February
25 - March 1 at the Radisson
Hotel and Conference Center in
Green Bay, WI .
Our Iowa Annual Winter
Convention will be held
February 6 - 9, 2010, with our
print competition being held as
usual and awards given out at
our banquet . As in the past, this
is an opportunity for you to “test
the waters” with your prints
before sending them on to the
affiliated judging in Wisconsin
for 2010 .
Again, as more information is
provided for both 2010 and
2011 and future, you will be
receiving it .
Good Works
WHCC has worked with many nonprofit organizations over the last
several years to help them meet their goals . Now I Lay Me Down
to Sleep (NILMDTS), Flashes of Hope, and Extreme Makeover Home
Edition (EMHE) are just a few on a list of many that are valued at
WHCC .
NILMDTS provides a helping hand and a healing heart to families supporting
and cherishing the life of a baby or young loved one that may
not have survived the beautiful journey of pregnancy or birth . WHCC
has played a part in helping to keep their spirit living through printed
photographs . In 2007, a large monetary donation from WHCC, allowed
this organization to hire their first Executive Director! To this
day we continue our support of the NILMDTS organization . Our owner,
Mike Hanline sits on the Board of Directors for NILMDTS and we
are continuing our support with photographic prints for the NILMDTS
Photographic Art Fundraising Project . WHCC has donated the printing of photographic prints that are hand-signed
and numbered by a handful of the industry’s most well-known . For more information about NILMDTS, visit http://
www .nowilaymedowntosleep .org
Flashes of Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating uplifting portraits of children fighting cancer and
other life threatening illnesses . The portraits are taken by award-winning photographers and WHCC provides each
child with an 8x10 and proofs of their session! These children and their families cherish these photographs and their
experience with Flashes of Hope when they are presented with beautiful images of themselves not to mention the
feeling of confidence they are given . For more information about Flashes of Hope, visit http://www .flashesofhope .
org
Working with Extreme Makeover Home Edition (EMHE) has been one of our more exciting experiences . EMHE airs
on ABC each Sunday evening across the US . They provide a deserving family with a new home including all furnishings
and artwork for the home . This is all completed within a 5-7 day time period . All items are donated from various
businesses for the family . Several WHCC clients have been fortunate enough to be asked by EMHE to photograph
the family . In turn WHCC provides the photographic art of the images our clients took of the family to be used in the
home . We have printed numerous gallery wraps, photographic prints and photographic prints mounted on standout
as well as press printed books for over a dozen deserving families . We are thrilled and honored to be a part of
the EMHE family! We love to see the piece of artwork we had a hand in creating bring a smile or a tear to a family
as they walk through their new home and it is aired on ABC for all to see . For more information about EMHE, visit
What Inspired Me About Photography
By Cynthia Lakelyn dLamant
My 8 th grade summer I was bored and restless . The answer was the Pentax K1000
35mm camera my father gave me . I have been hooked on photography ever since .
It has been a constant in my life no matter what other projects I’ve been involved
with . What I love about photography is the creative process . At root, a photograph
captures a moment in time that will never be repeated . That inspires me . It’s the
“truth” of the art form .
Another personal inspiration is the opportunity to mix photography with my love of marketing . They seem to go
hand in hand, a marriage of passion and logic--each creating inspiration for the other .
Here is to making dreams come to fruition .
