CALVERT CHESS SET £175
Early chess sets made in ivory by master carvers and turners were often
in red and white combinations. Our set is an exact reproduction of an
original made by John Calvert, a Master of the Worshipful Company of
Turners in London in 1795. The faux-ivory set of 32 pieces comes in a
beautiful hardwood box with an inlaid chessboard top. Drawers on
both sides hold the pieces securely. Measures 38 x 38 x 10.75 cms.
CAMARGUE CHESS SET £995
The Camargue is an ancient breed of horse, which found early appreciation within the Roman Empire as a horse
of war. Stout and rugged, yet proud and intelligent, its demeanour and history is worthy inspiration for this chess
set, derived from the horse itself and the medieval architecture of Aigue-Mortes in southern France, from where
it is exclusively reared.
The Camargue chessmen are handcrafted sculptures fashioned from finest pewter. Each piece is individually worked
to attain a superb degree of detail and finish, whilst retaining the quality and character that comes from being hand
made. Each piece is based in nappa leather, hallmarked by the principal sculptor J. Du Preez, and a single white
pawn in each set is initialled. The set comprises 34 chessmen (2 queens), with the King standing 4". Presented
in a beautiful Rosewood casket, with the interior lavishly finished in leather, and bearing the unique Knight
clasps. Includes Maple & Chacate chessboard (pictured below). This set is also available in Silver - POA.
