NDK14
WELCOME TO NDK!
Welcome to the 14 th year of Nan Desu Kan!
In our fourteenth year, we look back at how much NDK has grown and, also,
make some decisions on its future. What began in the Tivoli as a festival with
a couple hundred attendees has become one of the largest conventions in the
country. Because of this, we’ve had to take a hard look at what NDK means,
both to us and the community that has blossomed around it.
Beginning in 2011, we will institute an attendance cap of 7,500 attendees per
day, or 22,500 total. We want to stress that this decision was not made lightly.
We have looked over logistical options, searched for other venues, and waited
for 5 years for hotels that were never built, before making this decision. After
exploring every possible option, we truly believe that this attendance cap is in
everyone's best interest to maintain NDK's quality. We will be posting the
details of the attendance cap on the front page of our website after this year’s
convention. You can also look at the detailed explanation on our forums,
under the Announcements section.
On another note, we want to thank NDK’s staff. They are incredibly dedicated,
and it is an honor to work with them year after year. We are blessed to have
so many talented people at our side. NDK would not happen without them.
A huge debt of gratitude is owed to our artists this year. It has been fun seeing
what everyone has come up with. Stephanie Kao, ArtPlayMix, and our very
own Enigma have banded together to give us some beautiful images that
make our printed materials truly special. As you may notice, our badge art this
year is Steampunk-themed. We also would like to extend another huge thank
you to John Peters of Gypsygirl Press. His images can be found all over this
book, and they embody the whimsical fun-loving spirit that NDK is known
for.
You may not see them, but the Board of Directors is always there. They are an
ever-present force at NDK, helping guide it along the way throughout the
entire year. Great thanks is due to each and every one of them: BakuDan, the
Staff Whisperer; Tara, the Super Genius; and Greg, the Official Con Sourpuss.
They are the most dedicated, loving and funny people we have had the
privilege to meet.
Finally, we thank you! Without our amazing attendees, we could not put on
such a marvelous show. You always surprise us and you always make us smile.
Our first priority is to give you the type of NDK that you have come to expect:
the fun, happy friendly con, full of your favorite topics, people and honored
guests. We hope that NDK holds a special place in your heart as it does in
ours.
THE RULES
Read them, even if you think you know them already. They are for the protection
of you and everyone else in the convention. Ignorance of a rule is not an excuse
for breaking it.
HEALTH
1. If you are over 21 and wish to imbibe, please come to Ops to pick up a
wristband and present your Photo ID. It will allow you to purchase alcohol
at the hotel bar.
2. If you are of age, please drink alcohol slowly, and less than usual. Thanks to
the altitude, you have just become a very cheap date. In addition, Colorado has
stiff penalties for drinking underage and providing alcohol to minors; don’t
put yourself in jeopardy!
3. No illegal drugs. They could kill you, and the con.
4. Please brush your teeth, bathe, and use plenty of deodorant daily.
5. Food, Sleep and WATER!!! Your body and brain require all of these things
to function properly so please stay well fed, rested and hydrated.
6. If you are not feeling well, please inform a staff member. We will call our
EMS team for you. We take your health very seriously, so please don’t be shy.
HAPPINESS
1. Unwanted affection is not okay, and in some cases can be taken as harassment
or assault. If you or any person feels as if s/he has experienced unwanted
touching, hugging, or glomping, report it to the nearest staffer immediately.
DO NOT hug, grab, kiss or glomp anyone who does not want you to. If you
are caught, or reported as doing so, you may be banned from the convention.
So do yourself a favor: ask first and make sure it’s okay.
2. Verbal harassment will not be tolerated. This includes derogatory terms, hate
speech, and all manners of verbal abuse.
3. Be courteous to NDK staff. Many of them volunteer all year long to plan this
convention.
HALLWAY COSTUME RULES
1. No metal handcuffs, metal weapons of any sort, or realistic guns. Any
weapons purchased from the Dealers Room must be taken IMMEDIATELY
to your room.
2. If you are questioning the appropriateness of your costume, check with Ops
first to make sure it is acceptable in the hallways. All convention attendees
must also wear shoes, due to safety concerns. You will be asked to change
your outfit if your costume is not appropriate for all ages.
3. If you are carrying/wearing a sign, you will be asked to put it in your car or
in your room for the entirety of the convention. No exceptions.
4. Know how much space you are taking up! Don’t accidentally whack people
with your wings and props as you pass through the halls and be mindful of
any trailing fabric.
2010

CAMERA STUFF
1. Cameras and video cameras are welcome. By purchasing a
ticket to Nan Desu Kan, you agree to be filmed or
photographed by the convention. We discourage flash
photography since an excess of it causes people to become
blind. Photography may be banned completely during
certain panels at guest request or during the Cosplay.
Cameras and video cameras are also not allowed in the
video screening rooms, Dealers room, Art and Model
Shows.
2. The best place to take Cosplay photos is outside of the
hotel, or in our new photoshoot area.
HALLWAY TRAFFIC
1. Keep to the right in the halls so on-coming traffic can have
the other lane. Remember to step aside if you need to use
your cell phone, talk or do any non-traffic activities.
2. If you are in line, please stay close to the wall so two lanes
of traffic can still pass.
HOTEL
1. Respect all hotel staff.
2. Keep clear of areas marked “Staff Only” or “Employees
Only.” If the hotel kicks you out for being in a restricted
area, you will be banished from the con.
3. Pick up and dispose of your trash. By doing this you can
help us maintain a good impression on the hotel so they
let us come back every year.
4. If you have a hotel room, please respect the others around
you and keep it down. If a loud room is disturbing you,
please notify the con staff first: we are a little faster.
NASTY UGLY BUSINESS
(Don’t make us do this!)
1. Some things will get you immediately evicted from the con,
including violations of state and federal law, and most
evictions of this kind are permanent.
2. NDK has a two strikes, you’re out policy for lesser
problems. This includes but is not limited to: chasing the
guests around, harassing the staff, or anything else that is
dangerous or disturbing. If your badge gets punched for
any violation, be on your best behavior; on a second punch,
you will be banished from the con!
NDK14
5
PARENTAL NOTES
NDK is more geared to people over age 13 than under. You
have and maintain complete responsibility for, liability for,
and control over your children’s actions and what they see in
this environment. If you choose not to exercise that
responsibility, it is completely your decision.
We try to keep all daytime programming acceptable for
people under the age of 13. However, certain panels are
geared for an older crowd, such as AMVs and anything on
stage after 10 pm. We require ID for anything that is an 18+
panel, no exceptions.
NDK allows children age 13 and older to be unaccompanied
during daytime hours. Children found alone under 13 years of
age will be requested to point out their parent or guardian. If
they are unable to do so, they will be taken to Ops and police
may be brought in. The convention is not a child care facility,
nor does it take any responsibility for such duties. If you lose
your child, please come to Ops so we can inform our security
personnel and call police if they cannot be located
immediately.
2010

AUTOGRAPH SESSION RULES
Autographs are one of our most popular
attractions, so we've moved them to a new
location to help with line control. Thus,
autographs have a new home this year: on the
second floor of the Atrium tower, up the
elevators next to the Hotel Front Desk. Keep an
eye out for signs and feel free to ask a staff
member if you have trouble locating it.
1. You are allowed only ONE item to sign, per
guest. If you have more than one item, return
to the back of the line for each item.
2. Bootleg items are not allowed in the
autograph lines. Ask us if you’re not sure, but
if you don’t see a copyright somewhere on
your item, that’s the first clue.
3. Please do not hold up the line to take a photo.
You are allowed to take a photo of the guest,
but not with the guest. This slows up the line
and your fellow attendees may not get their
autograph. You don’t want to be that person,
do you?
4. Please do not hug, glomp, kiss, or otherwise
maul the guests. You may also not offer the
guests gifts, food, or anything else. You may
be removed from the convention if you do
either of these.
5. Getting in line for an autograph does not
guarantee you one. Autograph sessions are
scheduled for one hour only. It is up to the
guest, and their schedule, on whether or not
they can stay longer. If their time is coming to
an end, we will have to cut off the line as
needed.
6. Do not line up any sooner than 2 hours before
the scheduled autograph time.
These policies are enforced by NDK and not the
guests. Asking the guests to bypass and ignore
our policies may lead to ejection from the
autograph line.
Whimsical Entropy
Welcome to the next decade of the NDK Dealers
Room. We are pleased to present a selection of new
and returning dealers for the year 2010.
Furthermore, we are proud to endorse a bootlegfree
Dealers Room. Thank you for your continued
support of the anime industry, and for keeping
NDK free of bootleg items.
ROOM HOURS:
Friday: 2:00 pm [preregistered attendees],
3:00 pm [general audiences] to 7 pm.
Saturday: 9:30 am to 6:00 pm
Sunday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
WING/PROP CHECK For your safety and convenience, we have a free wing and prop
check outside of the Dealers Room door. Your props/wings will be held at the door for you
to pick up after you are done shopping. NDK will not be responsible for lost or damaged
props that have been checked in.
ENTRANCES AND EXITS Entrances and exits are marked clearly during high traffic
times. Use only the two doors on the far end of the exhibition hall. All along the
exterior walls of the Dealers Room, you will see doors marked with “No Exit” signs, each
equipped with an alarm. Do not open these doors at any time.
DEALERS ROOM THEFT POLICY Stealing here is no different from stealing anywhere
else: police will be called, charges will be pressed, and you will sorely regret it. Also note, we
have video cameras active throughout the Dealers Room and by entering, you agree to your
image being recorded and waive all right to protest this image being used for evidentiary
purposes.
If you are unsure where to pay for an item, DO NOT pick it up and wander around looking
for a cashier. In the past we’ve had some attendees accused of attempted theft for this. Find
the cashier first, then show them the item you wish to pay for.
NDK’s Video Game Room features 6 tracks of constant gaming on
the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, as well as Tournaments and special events
and prizes. We’re also featuring our normal awesome array of events,
including Blaz Blue-Continuum Shift, Modern Warfare 2, Pokemon:
HeartGold/SoulSilver, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Super Street
Fighter 4, Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Tekken 6.
CHARITY ARCADE VGR is proud to be a part of NDK’s charity
fundraising. There will be a variety of arcade games available all
weekend long just outside the VGR doors and all money collected in
the machines will be donated to the convention’s charity. Even better,
the machines are set so that your first quarter will give two credits (each
additional quarter yields one credit). Come in and kick some butts for
a good cause.
BATTLE OF THE ROCKBANDS 3! Try out at the VGR Annex.
Qualifiers will get a callback to show up at Main Events Saturday
Afternoon at 3pm. The VGR will be closed during the Battle of the
RockBands.
NO MORE TOURNAMENT SIGN-UP! If you want to join a
yournament, just come in when the tournament starts and collect a
tournament token. Each token has a number and if you are defeated,
you lose it. If you win, that token is your proof that you’re still in the
tournament. Keep track of it! And don’t try trading it to your friends –
we’re watching you, smart guy.
The ONLY exception is The Battle of the RockBands event. You must
have tried out and received a call-back in order compete onstage.
PRIZES! We’re sponsoring our usual number of special prizes this
year: Best Video Game Art/Model, Best Video Game Costume, Best
Video Game Music Video, Best CosPlay/Performance and Technical
Awards for Battle of the RockBands 3! The winners get a Golden
Joystick of their very own, and some extra special prizes as well!
T3h rul3z!
1. No food or drink is allowed in the VGR at any time, unless
you're a VGR Staff member. Yes, we will eat right there in front
of you.
2. No roughhousing. There are really no situations where people
should be touching each other while in the VGR. The only real
exception is when you shake the hand of the person who just
whupped your hiney at Soul Calibur, because you’re a good sport.
3. Do not abuse any games, systems, peripherals, or Staff
members in the VGR. Anyone damaging equipment
intentionally will have an equivalent weight in body parts removed
by the VGR Staff.
4. No unattended children under 12. The VGR is funded
primarily through the sales of unattended children to drunken
gypsies. Well, okay: they're not *that* drunken.
NDK14
VIDEO GAMING
17
5. No outside games, systems, or peripherals. This is due to
Colorado State Liability laws, not because we're jerks. No, we're
not making an exception for you. Stop asking.
6. No stealing. A terrible curse is laid on those who steal from the
VGR: all your saved games will be corrupted and lost, right after
you get further in your game than you ever have before.
7. No whining. Please note that this rule does not say: no
suggestions, no feedback, no requests or no opinions.
8. No leaving your personal belongings in the VGR. The VGR
Staff are not responsible for your personal belongings. If we find
unattended items we will take them to lost and found.
THE GOLDEN RULE OF THE VIDEO GAME ROOM:
PASS THAT CONTROLLER
The chairs in the VGR are set up in rudimentary lines, clearly indicating
who goes next. If you want to play a game, have a seat. As people
finish, they move away and everyone moves forward. Sometimes a
game is so popular that people stand in line behind the chairs – this is
okay too. When you finish a game, check to see if someone is behind
you waiting for it. If no one wants in, you’re all good. If someone
wants to give it a try, pass it on. If someone isn’t passing the controller,
tell a VGR Staff member immediately.
Addendum: this also includes the “winner passes” or “loser passes” rules
at other conventions - those rules do NOT apply in NDK’s VGR. If
you win the match, pass the controller. If you lose the match, pass the
controller.
