6. Market Access<br />

<strong>Ethiopia</strong> is a member of a regional trade group<strong>in</strong>g <strong>–</strong> The Common Market <strong>for</strong> Eastern &<br />

Southern Africa (COMESA) <strong>–</strong> a region <strong>in</strong>habited by more than 420 million people. <strong>Ethiopia</strong><br />

also enjoys a Duty Free and Quota Free (DFQF) privilege extended by, among others, USA <strong>–</strong><br />

Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), EU <strong>–</strong> Everyth<strong>in</strong>g But Arms (EBA), other<br />

preferential duty treatment from countries such as Ch<strong>in</strong>a, India, Austria, F<strong>in</strong>land, Japan, Norway,<br />

Switzerland and Sweden. The market accesses privileges allow <strong>in</strong>vestors to reap the benefits<br />

of the preferential markets giv<strong>in</strong>g them the chance to get competitive edge <strong>for</strong> their products<br />

compared to those outside of the scheme.<br />

7. Taxation<br />

7.1 Registration of Tax Identification Number (TIN)<br />

Every <strong>in</strong>vestor has a tax obligation and is required to obta<strong>in</strong> a tax payer identification number<br />

(‘TIN’).<br />

The Revenue and Customs Authority is <strong>in</strong> charge of issu<strong>in</strong>g TIN. (only certified copies are<br />

accepted):<br />

Application <strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> taxpayer identification number.<br />

Identification papers of the <strong>in</strong>vestor or his authorised agent.<br />

Passport size photo of the <strong>in</strong>vestor or his authorised agent.<br />

Memorandum and articles of association.<br />

Partnership agreement <strong>in</strong> case of partnership.<br />

Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Trade Registration Certificate and Trade License, which is the <strong>in</strong>vestment license or<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment permit.<br />

Trade name registration (if applicable).<br />

Investment permit.<br />

Residence permit <strong>in</strong> case of <strong>for</strong>eign partnership.<br />

Power of attorney if registration is submitted by an agent. Time needed: 24 hours<br />

7.2 Types of tax<br />

There are ma<strong>in</strong>ly two types of taxations: direct and <strong>in</strong>direct taxes. The direct taxes are divided<br />

<strong>in</strong> to five categories: personal <strong>in</strong>come tax, rental tax, with hold<strong>in</strong>g tax, bus<strong>in</strong>ess profit tax and<br />

other taxes. The ma<strong>in</strong> types of <strong>in</strong>direct taxes applicable are VAT, custom duty, excise and<br />

turnover taxes.<br />
