Location <strong>Ethiopia</strong> is situated <strong>in</strong> the north-eastern part of Africa. It is<br />

bordered by the Sudan to the west, Eritrea to the north,<br />

Djibouti and Somalia to the east and Kenya to the south,<br />

extend<strong>in</strong>g 3º to 15º north of the equator and 33º to 48º<br />

east of the Greenwich meridian.<br />

Area 1.14 million square kilometres.<br />

Irrigated land 3,420,000 hectares (3%)<br />

Government The <strong>Ethiopia</strong>n constitution was adopted <strong>in</strong> 1995. The<br />

constitution provides <strong>for</strong> federal system, which is<br />

structurally based on the federal government with n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

autonomous regional states and two chartered city<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istrations.<br />

The FDRE has a parliamentarian <strong>for</strong>m of government with<br />

a bicameral parliament which comprises the House of the<br />

Peoples’ Representatives and the House of the Federation.<br />

The House of the Peoples’ Representatives is the highest<br />

authority of the Federal Government.<br />

Climate There are two major seasons encompass<strong>in</strong>g dry and wet<br />

seasons. The dry season prevails from October through<br />

May. The wet season runs from June to September. Much of<br />

<strong>Ethiopia</strong> has a surpris<strong>in</strong>gly temperate climate by African<br />

standards, because of its elevation.<br />

Topography <strong>Ethiopia</strong> has an elevated central plateau vary<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> height<br />

from 2,000 to 3,000 meters above sea level. In the north<br />

and centre of the country, there are some 25 mounta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

whose peaks reach over 4,000 meters.<br />

The most famous <strong>Ethiopia</strong>n river is the Blue Nile or Abbay,<br />

which flows a distance of 1,450 kilometers from its source<br />

to jo<strong>in</strong> the White Nile at Khartoum.<br />
