Here we are! It is time to enjoy the 27th Annual Midwest Mopars in the Park 

Car Show. Each of the board members has worked extremely hard so that you 

can be assured of a great time. We have embraced our new home at the 

Dakota County Fairgrounds. 

This year we have undertaken two new tasks. One is the 1971 Special Vehicle 

Display and the second is our Guinness World Record attempt being 

undertaken with 2008 and newer Challengers. As I write this, on May 15th, 

we have 90 Challengers and 350 other show cars pre-registered. Past 

experience tells us that we can expect 600-700 more cars to register on the 

day of the show. 

Another change we have made this year is moving Show Field "C" so that the 

"winged Warriors" can be on the grass field at the front of the grounds. 

Located adjacent to them will be the display area for the 2008 and newer 

Challengers'. We hope you get a chance to watch the history-making parade 

on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. You will also have a chance to say hello to Don 

Prudhomme and the other racers. 

I have been personally involved with each of the 27 shows and it has been fun 

watching it grow from a show held at a car dealership, then to Raceway Park 

and now to our permanent home at Dakota County Fairgrounds. Phone calls 

pour in every day from across the country and Canada. Our "host" hotel was 

fully booked in February. We are rapidly becoming a "destination" rather than 

just a car show. Word of mouth is spreading rapidly. 

I know it might be hard to believe, but we are already talking about the 2012 

event. We want to make next year's show an even better event. 

Again, thank you to all the Board Members whose untold hours of planning 

went into making this a spectacular event. Thank you to all the participants, 

vendors, swappers, workers, car and truck owners and spectators for making 

it work. Board members are wearing green shirts. Feel free to stop and say 

hello.

From the Editor 

! As I work on this newsletter we are 3 weeks away 

from Mopars in the Park 2011. As I prepare for this 

years show I reflect on the time I went to the show at 

Raceway Park, about 8 years ago now, and I was reintroduced 

to Mopars. As a teenager I had a 71 

Barracuda Convertible, I loved that car, but when I 

got married, and started a family, I made the choice to 

let the car go, and I started driving a Toyota. For 

several years cars were nothing more than tools of 

transportation to me. Then, on a whim, going to a car 

show changed everything for me, it solidified my love 

for Mopars, and got me back on track to follow my 

desire’s again. 

! This years show is going to be amazing. I can’t 

believe how much it has grown in the last couple 

years, and we should all be proud to be a part of 

something as special as Mopars in the Park. 

! I would personally like to thank everyone 

involved, you helped this kid get his head on straight 

and get back into the hobby, and your efforts will 

undoubtably help others in the future. It is important, 

to me, but also to generations to come, that we 

preserve this spirit. Enjoying the cars, one another, 

and the history that has been created, and that we are 

creating. 

! Have fun at this years Mopars in the Park, and 

don’t take anything too seriously, we are here for the 

same reason.

MESSAGES FROM THE CLUB 

Midwest Mopars North by Steve Leino 

May 17, 2011. Duluth Dodge. Sights, sounds and 

odors not detected here for decades. Cast iron, 

American made pushrod V-8’s, two valves per 

cylinder. Lumpy cams. Twice pipes rumbling. Bushels 

of air inducted through multiple venturis. Partially 

burned gasoline fumes entering the atmosphere 

without any form of conversion. Engines described 

in multiple hundreds of cubic inches not something 

decimal something liters. Familiar numbers- 318, 

340, 383, 413, 426 and 440. Styles, shapes and sounds 

identifiable from a mile away. 

Duluth Dodge hosted the May meeting of Midwest 

Mopars North. Fifteen mighty Mopars (and 3 or 4 

other brands) came out on a pleasant -for Duluth- 

evening. Chargers, Challengers, and a couple of grand 

old C bodies showed up. A pair of Savoys, Larry 

Watczak’s white ’62 and Jim Kirsch’s black ’63, which 

was featured in the June 2011 issue of Car Craft, 

attracted onlookers. Technical issues were discussed 

at great length, and some even solved. 

Duluth Dodge’s customer lounge hosted the club 

meeting. Initial plans for a September meeting at 

Alcott Park in Virginia and a car show the weekend 

of the Garfield Ave Time Trials were discussed. 

Next month’s meeting, June 21, will be at Gordy’s Hi 

Hat in Cloquet, one of the most collector car 

friendly establishments around. 

Muscle Car Restorations by Wade Girard 

The weather be dammed!!! We gathered together at 

McDonalds in Hudson, WI where we met and 

updated one another with the latest in each others 

lives before climbing into our cars and heading out 

for the cruise to Muscle Car Restorations. 

Once there we were instructed to line up the new 

Challengers in the main parking lot where we 

stepped out of the heated car and into the much 

colder outside temps (I was one of the minorities 

that choose to wear shorts) and scurried into the 

buildings to inspect the creations that MCR was 

working on at the time, all of them in various states 

of resurrection, allowing you to absorb the 

magnitude of the job of restoring a car and to just 

stand in awe at the beautiful work that MCR 

performs on these cars. 

We also enjoyed some warm hot dogs and beans as 

well as some cold soda pop while enjoying watching a 

car on the Dyno pull 540 Horse Power and do a 1/4 

mile in 11 seconds. 

There is no shortage of sights and sounds at MCR 

and I would encourage you to try to make it to the 

next open house that they host. 

Mopar Ponderosa by Wade Girard 

In the early evening hours on Saturday the 14th we 

gathered, indoors, at Greg Nelson’s Mopar 

Ponderosa for another wonderful club meeting. We 

choose to not grill hot dogs and burgers in the cold 

and instead opted to pick up the phone and get some 

pizzas. There were no complaints. 

The only outside time was spent traveling between 

the buildings to take in the cars that grace the Mopar 

Ponderosa. A couple 71 Hemi Cuda convertibles

here, a couple 71 Plum Crazy Challengers there, 

Superbirds, Dusters, Road Runners, and even a 

Ferrari (we forgive you Greg) were all in attendance 

for gazing, and drooling as long as it is not on the 

hood. And of course the atmosphere, warm on the 

inside with all of us getting together to catch up on 

the latest from this little family. 

Minnesota’s Newest Chrysler Dealer 

Say “Hello” to Minnesota’s newest Chrysler Group 

dealership: Ryan Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is proud

The Ryan family has a long history of successful 

dealerships, mostly in the Midwest. In 1955, Robert 

Ryan Sr. opened his own Used Vehicle Agency in 

Sioux Falls, South Dakota, operating as Mid Town 

Motors. In 1965 he was awarded the Rambler and 

Mercedes Benz franchises and ultimately dealing to 

obtain the Chrysler Plymouth franchises. In 1966, 

Robert Ryan Sr. built and opened Ryan Motors in 

Sioux Falls, South Dakota operating as Ryan Motors 

Chrysler Plymouth. Robert Sr. was awarded 

Chrysler's "Pacemakers Top 100 Club Award" from 

Chrysler for multiple years. 

In 1971, Robert Sr. moved his family to Texas after 

selling his automobile interests to Henry and David 

Billion. David Billion and his son are still in 

business today. 

Robert Sr. and his family moved to Houston and 

operated Midtown Chrysler Plymouth for one year 

for Chrysler until Katy Road Chrysler Plymouth, 

Chrysler's flagship design facility, opened. In 1975, 

the Ryan Family sold out to the Benson family and 

returned to the Midwest, where most of the 14 

children and 22 grandchildren reside today. 

50 years later, the Ryan Family opens Wright 

County’s only Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram Truck 

Franchise in a Chrysler flagship designed facility for 

the area’s customers. 

Ryan Chrysler has brought together many individual 

employees, with a great deal of prior Chrysler 

experience, to form a strong, customer-focused 

organization that opened for business April 11, 2011. 

One name among the management team at Ryan 

Chrysler that may be familiar to many Midwest 

Mopars members is Ole Olson, Parts Manager. Ole 

has a long history with Mopar Performance and 

Midwest Mopars, having worked as a vendor selling 

wearables and parts at many Mopars in the Park 

Shows. While Ryan Chrysler won’t be a vendor this 

year, he has assured us that they will return in 2012. 

Stop by in Buffalo and welcome the Ryan 

organization back to the “Mopar Family”. 

Indy always puts on a great display with lots of 

impressive engines, ready to produce lots of 

horsepower no doubt! 

Hundreds will gather and enjoy the burn out 

contest. This is the second year for the contest 

which turned out to be a big hit. I think that 

thing might have a Hemi.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH SIDE 

Hopefully when you read this we will be saying the 

weather has finally turned for the better as we have had 

a long cold and wet spring. I know the weather has 

taken a toll on us as we have so many outside projects 

we look forward to each spring. 

The cold weather and snow also slows down projects in 

the shop as we heat the house & shop for the most part 

with wood so that means more trips to our friends 

business for wood as well. As can be expected things go 

a lot slower than hoped for. After having several friends 

project cars completely torn apart at our house one right 

after the other and some overlapping we were looking at 

a break so we could get caught up on some of the 

household projects around here. 

We were hoping to get our friend Wayne’s Superbird 

completed a couple months ago but my #1 helper Mike 

(Son in law) plows snow as well as works a full time job 

and dose mechanical work at home as well so he has 

spent much of the winter working his regular job, 

plowing snow or sleeping. 

At this point we are hustling to get the Bird done for 

the June 4th Show. This car came up from Kansas as a 

rolling shell and we were just going to paint it but as 

most projects go it turned out to be more than that 

starting with the fact that it was a color change actually 

going back to the original Hemi Orange from the Pearl 

White it had spent most of its life. To make matters 

worse the front end and nose were welded on and the 

entire undercarriage was coated with a THICK 

GOOEY undercoating which had to be removed so the 

car ended up on the rotisserie. 

Well as time went on Wayne started sending or bringing 

parts up for the car, as he wanted them installed, so at 

this point we have everything for the car except the 

seats, console and a few interior pieces. As you can 

imagine when a car is taken apart 500 miles away and 

quite a while ago finding all the parts can be a challenge. 

The last month has been spent sending notes to Wayne 

then he sends parts or we order parts etc. Well as I write 

this we have the nose assembly to put on then lift the 

car up and slide the Engine/Front Suspension under and 

hook up all the lines but there are still a lot of details 

and lots of room for Murphy’s Law to appear. 

The May meeting at Gregg’s Mopar Ponderosa went 

well and had a good turnout considering the cold wet 

weather. Gregg had the heat on and we all were able to 

keep warm and visit in comfort after touring the other 

buildings. There were quite a few who braved the 

morning rain and headed to Muscle Car Restorations 

that morning and it sounded like they had a great time. 

That was on our list but with the way the Bird project 

has been going I stayed home and worked on it. The 

Anoka River Run was that same night but was rained 

out so we are hoping we are getting all this crazy 

weather behind us and we will have a great summer. 

One show that should be great this year is the Little 

Log House show in Hastings on July 29-31. This is where 

they moved Porky’s so it will be interesting to see what 

they do with the building. We have attended this show 

for many years and it is one of our favorites of the year.

It’s time for the 27th Annual Midwest Mopars in the 

Park National Car Show & Swap Meet! 

Your car club board of directors and show board 

volunteers have been busy putting together another 

outstanding line up of events for this year’s car show. 

While there is always so much to do and see at the 

show, here are some of the Saturday highlights you won’t 

want to miss. 

Hagen Reunion 

10:15 am – Main Stage 

This year’s traditional reunion features the late John 

Hagen’s Pro Stock Arrow reunited with his family. John 

Hagen began drag racing at the old Minnesota 

Dragways in the early 60’s. In 1965, he aligned himself 

with the Plymouth brand. His racing success, along 

with his brand loyalty, lead to Chrysler factory support 

throughout his racing career. While the Hagen team 

never achieved a national event win, they were very 

successful at the divisional level. In 1981 Hagen finished 

7th in NHRA world championship pro stock points and 

reset the speed record three times during the year. He 

recognized the importance of his crew and the support 

of his family. We lost this great man to a tragic racing 

accident in 1983, but his legacy lives on today! The Pro 

Stock Arrow is now owned and shown by Clark and 

Colleen Rand. 

Racing Roundtable Discussion 

11 am – Registration Building 

Led this year by Herb McCandless, the roundtable 

participants include racing legends: Judy Lilly, Don 

Grother, Arlen Vanke, Roland Leong, Tom Coddington, 

Dave Rockwell, Larry Reyes, our special guest, Don 

Prudhomme, and Pat Baer, the Head of Race Engine 

Engineering for Chrysler. This will be a great 

opportunity for you to ask questions and hear the 

stories these individuals have to share. 

Don Prudhomme Book Signing 

Noon to 2 pm – Racer Building 

Here is an unique opportunity for you to visit with Don 

“Snake” Prudhomme and purchase an autographed copy 

of a book that Vintage Motorsport Magazine called 

“The greatest reading adventure of 2009”: Snake vs. 

Mongoose: How a Rivalry Changed Drag Racing 

Forever by Tom Madigan. The Snake will be signing 

books that have also been signed by Tom “Mongoose” 

McEwen. 

Burnout Contest 

1 pm – Main Stage (Saturday and Sunday) 

Who doesn’t enjoy a burnout contest and especially a 

Mopar Burnout Contest? This year’s participants will 

each receive a Participant t-shirt for their efforts and 

compete for a grand prize. If you are interested in 

participating in this event, please be sure to contact 

Richard at the Swappers entrance when you arrive. For 

everyone else, plan on watching a fun and exciting 

contest. You won’t be disappointed. 

Guinness World Records Attempt 

2:30 pm – Swappers Entry Gate 

Wow! This is going to be a great event. If you own or 

know someone who does own a 2008 to present 

Challenger, this is where you are going to want to be on 

Saturday. Not only do we have to assemble a minimum

of 250 Challengers to break the Guinness World 

Records, we have to parade them, too. And with every 

parade there must be a lead car and we’ve pulled out all 

of the stops with Mopar’s help. The lead car, a Dodge 

Law Enforcement Challenger will be driven by none 

other than Pat Baer, the Head of Race Engine 

Engineering for Chrysler. But we’re not done yet, the 

lead car will be followed by the Mopar ’10 Challenger 

and then all the Challengers we have assembled. The 

parade will leave the fairgrounds through the Swappers 

Entrance Gate at approximately 2:30 pm and proceed 

along the parade route shown below. Note: There will 

be a drivers’ meeting at 2 pm. Please plan on being at 

Guinness Parade Route 

your car for the drivers’ meeting and be prepared to 

begin the parade on schedule.

Attempt, we are in need of more volunteers for this and 

other events during the show. If you have not yet
