Zip and Unzip folders<br />

<strong>in</strong><br />

W<strong>in</strong>dows Vista or <strong>XP</strong><br />

Zipp<strong>in</strong>g (or compress<strong>in</strong>g) folders and <strong>file</strong>s decreases their size.<br />

Zipp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>file</strong>s <strong>in</strong>to a folder for upload<strong>in</strong>g to the OLS means you only need to<br />

browse for one folder, rather than several <strong>file</strong>s.<br />

When download<strong>in</strong>g an assignment from the OLS, it may be <strong>in</strong> a <strong>zipped</strong> format.<br />

This means that you need to extract the <strong>file</strong>s from the folder <strong>in</strong> order to open<br />

them.<br />

You do not need any special software, such as W<strong>in</strong>Zip or RAR.<br />

You just need W<strong>in</strong>dows Vista or W<strong>in</strong>dows <strong>XP</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g system.<br />

Create a <strong>zipped</strong> folder<br />

1. Open W<strong>in</strong>dows Explorer or My Computer to show the <strong>file</strong> directory.<br />

2. Click on a <strong>file</strong> <strong>in</strong> the location of the <strong>file</strong>s you wish to zip.<br />

3. On the File menu, po<strong>in</strong>t to New, and then click Compressed (<strong>zipped</strong>)<br />

Folder (it’s the last item <strong>in</strong> the list).<br />

4. Your new compressed folder is displayed as a folder icon<br />

with a zipper.<br />

Depend<strong>in</strong>g on which folder options that you have set, a<br />

.zip <strong>file</strong> name extension may also appear.<br />

5. It is suggested that you name the folder by the unit name and assignment<br />

number, eg BSBADM504B_1.<br />

6. Select the New Compressed (<strong>zipped</strong>)Folder.zip, then choose File menu,<br />

Rename<br />

7. Key <strong>in</strong> the new name, then press the Enter key. When nam<strong>in</strong>g the folder,<br />

take care that you don’t delete the .zip extension.<br />

Mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>file</strong>s to the <strong>zipped</strong> folder<br />

Move a s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>file</strong><br />

You move <strong>file</strong>s (and folders) to or from compressed folders exactly the same way<br />

as you move them to or from uncompressed folders.<br />

Note: If you prefer, you can drag the <strong>file</strong>s <strong>in</strong>stead of us<strong>in</strong>g Edit Copy/Paste.<br />

1. Select the <strong>file</strong> you wish to copy, choose Edit, Copy<br />

2. Select the <strong>zipped</strong> folder, choose Edit, Paste<br />

3. If you double click the <strong>zipped</strong> folder to open it, you can see the <strong>file</strong> you<br />

have just copied.<br />

4. When you move a <strong>file</strong> or a folder to a compressed folder, that <strong>file</strong> or folder<br />

is automatically compressed.<br />

Move multiple <strong>file</strong>s to the <strong>zipped</strong> folder<br />

1. To move more than one <strong>file</strong> at a time to the <strong>zipped</strong> folder, hold down the<br />

Ctrl key and click on each <strong>file</strong> to select it.<br />

2. Release the Ctrl key<br />

3. Choose Edit, Copy<br />

4. Select the <strong>zipped</strong> folder, choose Edit, Paste<br />

Extract<strong>in</strong>g <strong>file</strong>s from a compressed folder<br />

A <strong>file</strong> that is moved from a compressed folder is automatically uncompressed.<br />

Alternatively, you can use the Extraction Wizard.<br />

1. Select the <strong>zipped</strong> folder, then choose File, Extract All<br />

2. The Extraction Wizard opens, click Next to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

3. Click Browse to locate the folder to which you wish to extract the <strong>file</strong>s<br />
