Location: All hospital sites<br />

The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals <strong>NHS</strong> Foundation Trust collects<br />

on the spot feedback from patients using hand-held digital<br />

devices and paper based questionnaires.<br />

<strong>Volunteer</strong>s are required to help in assisting with capturing<br />

patients views whilst on wards or clinics within the hospital.<br />

The feedback received is used to help improve services and<br />

patient care.<br />

Location: Northern General Hospital<br />

Accident & Emergency is a very busy area, which treats a high<br />

volume of patients with both major and minor conditions. The A<br />

& E at the Northern General Hospital sees adult patients only, with<br />

annual attendance of approximately 93,000.<br />

Personal Characteristics/Person Specification<br />

• An understanding and appreciation of the need for confidentiality<br />

at all times<br />

• Have good verbal communication skills to engage patients and<br />

relatives with differing levels of comprehension<br />

Conversation Partner Scheme <strong>Volunteer</strong><br />

Location: Community based<br />

The Conversation Partner Scheme is operated by the Adult Speech &<br />

Language Therapy (SLT) Service in Sheffield for people with acquired<br />

speech/language difficulties following a stroke. Each person has a<br />

different set of speech and language difficulties; these can include<br />

slurred speech which is hard to understand, comprehension problems,<br />

and expressive difficulties. People with acquired speech and language<br />

difficulties are visited in their own homes once/week for support with<br />

their communication, accessing opportunities for conversation and<br />

social inclusion.<br />

The volunteer role includes:<br />

materials - this may include finding books/magazines/brochures etc.<br />

Sheffield Hospitals Charity<br />

is the official <strong>NHS</strong> charity<br />

for the Sheffield Teaching<br />

Hospitals <strong>NHS</strong> Foundation<br />

Trust (STH). With the help<br />

of our supporters, Sheffield Local supporters celebrating the end of their sponsored walk<br />

Hospitals Charity raises<br />

funds to improve the care and treatment of thousands of local patients being treated<br />

for almost every type of condition at the STH.<br />

As a volunteer in the STH you will see first-hand the difference the Charity makes. In<br />

fact, you’re already benefiting from our support as the Charity provides annual<br />

grants to the <strong>Volunteer</strong> Services Team. This funding helps them to manage the<br />

wonderful teams of volunteers who provide that vital “something extra” through<br />

their dedication to the hospitals and their patients.<br />

Our funds have helped patients in many different ways including:<br />

• A specialist nurse at the Cardiothoracic Centre, in the Chesterman Wing of the Northern<br />

General Hospital, to help save lives by detecting and treating serious inherited cardiac<br />

conditions.<br />

• The library at Weston Park Hospital that provides patients with the opportunity to borrow<br />

books, newspapers, magazines, DVDs and CDs. A trolley service is also provided for patients<br />

who do not feel well enough to visit the library.<br />

• A twin cot with heated mattress for premature twin babies being treated in the Special<br />

Care Baby Unit at the Jessop Wing Hospital, enabling twins to be nursed together. This<br />

helps them to bond and supports their development in the long-term.<br />

• The creation of an en-suite bedroom in the Haematology Department at the Royal<br />

Hallamshire Hospital, so partners and family members can stay overnight with leukaemia<br />

and other blood disorder patients.<br />

How you can make a difference<br />

As a volunteer at the STH you are already making life better for patients, but there are many<br />

other ways you can help to make a difference with Sheffield Hospitals Charity.<br />

You could join a fundraising event for us, like running in the Sheffield Half Marathon, or organise<br />

your own, such as a family fun day or a sponsored walk. You could make a single donation via<br />

our website or help us to plan for the future with security and confidence by making a regular<br />

donation, which you can do by contacting our Fundraising Team (see below for details).<br />

If you have a particular hospital, ward or clinical area that you’d like to direct your gift or<br />

fundraising efforts towards, just let us know and we’ll make sure it goes to the right place.<br />

Spread the word<br />

Make more people aware of our work by letting patients and their families know about us and<br />

what they can do to help. Follow us on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, where<br />

you can share our posts and encourage our other supporters, so your friends and family can see<br />

what we do for patients in Sheffield.<br />

Can you volunteer a little more of your time?<br />

The STH are made up of five hospitals in different sites across Sheffield. As a result the Charity<br />

struggles for the time and resources to keep our literature within the hospitals stocked and upto-date<br />

and our collection tins maintained and regularly emptied. As a volunteer already on site,<br />

you are in a perfect position to help us if you have the time.<br />

If you can spare an hour or so whilst you’re volunteering at one of our hospitals and can help us<br />

with the stocking of Charity literature or the emptying of collection tins, we’d be very grateful if<br />
