Our congratulations to Dr Allen Yeoh, Consultant, The Children’s Medical Institute,<br />
NUH. Dr Yeoh received the prestigious Singapore Youth Award 2002, the highest national<br />
youth honour in Singapore. He was recognised for his outstanding achievements in<br />
the diagnosis and treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia - the most common<br />
form of childhood cancer in developing countries.<br />

The Children’s Medical Institute, NUH, for<br />
winning the Young Researcher Award for his<br />
research on obesity in children. Dr Lee clinched<br />
the award at the 11 th ASEAN Paediatric<br />
Federation Conference for his paper on<br />
“Mutational Analysis of the Melanocortin 3 receptor and Melanocortin 4 receptor<br />
genes in severely obese children”.<br />

Our accolades also go out to Dr Jimmy So, Consultant, Department of Surgery. Dr So bagged the Travel Grant Award<br />
for his research on “Antitelomerase RNA therapy for gastric and colon cancers – in vitro study”. He will receive the award<br />
at the 10 th United European Gastroenterology Week in Switzerland in October 2002.<br />

Upgrading Ourselves for Our Patients<br />
With a focus on Patient Education – Necessity or Nicety,<br />
a two-day Asia Pacific Regional Conference was organised<br />
by Patient Education Support Services, NUH. Our nurse<br />
clinicians and their overseas counterparts attended this<br />
conference held at Mandarin Singapore in July 2002.<br />
The conference was a learning arena where doctors, nurses,<br />
therapists, dieticians and case managers could share<br />
information and experiences in patient education. They<br />
shared research and evidenced-based practices, developed<br />
approaches of new trends as well as improved collaborative<br />
practices.<br />
Sports ACE 2002<br />
NUH received the Certificate of Commendation for<br />
actively promoting sports and fitness to our staff.<br />
Our driving force, Suhanah bte Alwi from the NUH<br />
Total Lifestyle Connection Club, also received the<br />
Most Active Organiser Award for her tireless energy<br />
in organising activities and encouraging everyone to<br />
be more active in sports.<br />
