Mid-decade census pondered
New population estimates are perking continued
interest among Canton officials to obtain a middecade
The driving force behind a middecade
Officials were surprised in November
The Summit was packed beyond its
_ "There's a lot of apprehension,"
said Supervisor Tom Yack, "A lot.
It's going to be a challenge. I hope
"We can only accommodate so
"We eipect after that temperatures
will return to normal for
this time of year — with daytime
highs in the mid-30a and lows in
the low teens," Deedler added
"That means it's going to be
ourselves out there at soma
point"
And yea. everyone waa thankful
to go home to a hot shower and
Through the experience, the
That'* not to mention that, un-
like many homeless families and
individuals, the teena had hope
The experience shared by the
one many people don't have.
"Canton ia a community where
when people see someone begging
for food, they can't believe it
could happen here. This shows
that there are people who are
keeping their eyes cloaed. It ia out
of sight, out of mind.
"We can't afford to be like this.
Too many valuable people have
been kicked too many times and
It is our God-given duty to help
The students are doing everything
except photo development.
This was done until five years
ago, but became too expensive.
computer disks. Photographs are
spring and are chosen by teach
ers and the
being selected, students go to
Some students work on staff
for just a year, while others
hsve several years of experience.
such as editor-in-chief
Crystsi Kopacz. a sophomore
who has worked on a yearbook
since seventh grade. She does
everything, including checking
mistakes, fgoing through layouts
three times after school and
"hunting people down who put
stuff off. This is not a slacker
class," Kopacz stud.
Why would someone want to
work on the yearbook even
though it takes long hours?
"It's tremendously rewarding,"
Pearson said.
taken on donated or personal Working is "really neat" even
Layouts were previously
drawn on grids and only body
Now the entire yearbook is produced
on the nine new Macintosh
computers using
Pagemaker software, ao the staff
can look at everything. The staff
ion, including
mail, so every person gets
her own mailbox, Pearson said.
Pearson, who worked for a
Masaachuaetta newspaper before
coming to Plymouth Salem, receives
layout, critiques apd has
students make corrections.
When the pages are 100 percent
correct, she keeps them.
The book covers everything:
seniors, under-claasmen. sporti'
extracurricular activitiea, faculty
and candid photoa, incorporating
the entire school, Pearson
esnac said. She had wanted to be
on the staff since being a freshman
because of friends that said
working was "cool', she said. "I
didnt know how hard it was,"
Duchesneac said
But this hard work has paid
off. with awards for Best Cover,
It's no wonder then, that the
community, including libraries
and museums have embraced
the yearbook on file, which dates
back to 1900.
The book ia popular because
it's the only written record of the
school," said Pearson. Students
like being able to read about
past things and events.
Wegrzyn. a retired roofer,
said hiB former and soon to be
again wife never approved of
him buying lottery tickets,
which he has made a habit of
since 1972. Lately he has
spent $10 to $15 per day on
the lottery.
"She doesn't like me spend -
ing my money like that," he
said But Carol Wegrzyn has
now changed her mind. "Now
it's a good habit," her former,
and soon to be again, husbapd
said.
If he could. Wegrzyn said, he
would split his winnings evenly
with his four children. "If I
<
could Fd say $2 million for each
of my kids and $2 million for
me." he said.
The most he has ever won
vwrth a lottery ticket before is
$2,700. "All this stuff (about being
rich) is brand new to me. It
will be a few weeks before we
know what we can do and what
we can't do."
Wegrzyn's highest priority,
however, is to cure his wife of
the chronic head pain and
dizziness she has suffered since
hitting her head on the ice in a
fall six years ago.
"If there is a doctor out there
who can help her. 1*11 pay him."
he said.
"All this money and you
can't enjoy it because of these
At first Wegrzyn tried to keep
his winnings a secret, but the
urge to tell became irresistible.
"When you're so excited you
want to tell someone to share
your happiness," he said. "Why
win something if you can't enjoy
it?"
Wegrzyn doesn't get the
whole $10 million all at once,
however, but rather in 20 annual
installments of S5I2,DOO before
taxes. $340,000 after taxes
Wegrzyn said he will remarry
his former wife early next
year.
"When you promise God
something, you keep your
word," he said. "I love that kid
more than anything."
won an Academy Award ia 1917
for A Double Lifc," in wWck be
playad an actor ao ftzatad on hia
role as the Moor that he commiU
a copycat murder of Shalley
Wintara.
Five Othelloe followed, including
Oraon Wtllaa' in 1962, Laurence
Olivier'i in 1966 and the
Verdi opera with Placido Domingo
in 1®86. j.
A new vermion, dim.t«d and
adapted by Oliver Parker, may be
the beat of the lot. Handeomely
photographed at a caatle ouUide
Rome and in Venice, the film
tcema tailored for I990e audiencee.
The aenaXiality ia boldly pra-
olence. Yet the beauty of the bm-^
guage remalna.
Laurence Piahburne give* the
title role all the authority that a
conquering general demand*,
adding a note of eexual vibrancy.
Hia stature makes the downfall
more shattering.
Fishburne ia mostly known for
modern,, urban roles aa in "Boyx
N the Hood" and "What's IA
Got lo Do With it?" But he ia
also stage-trained, and he speaks
the classical lines with freebn«aa
and power.
I ago always has been one of
Shakespeare's moat fully real: tad
'villains, so cunning and evil that
he can overshadow Othello. With
his vast background in Shakespearean
theater and films. Kenneth
Branagh present* an lago
He lead* Othello almost puppetlike
into believing that Desdiemona
has cuckolded him.
Branagh dominates his time
onscreen, duping Caaaio (Nathan
iel Parker) and Roderigo (Michael
Malooey) into contributing to the
conspiracy Branagh often underscores
hia perfidy with a small,
winking gesture aimed directly at
the audience.
The pitiable role of Deademona
befalls the French actress Irene
Jacob. She ia the ideal portrait of
a.Venetian aristocrat, compliant
to Othello's amour, yet strongwilled
enough to defy her father's
opposition to the marriage. She is
a beguiling figure, faintly accented.
No wonder Othello was en
thralled.
The classically-trained English
cast includes two standout*.
Nathaniel Parker brings vigor to
his role of the wronged Caaaio,
whom lago purport* to be Deade -
mona'a aecret lover. Anna Patrick
evokes aympathy aa Deedemona'a
confidante, Emilia; sue rails in
righteous wrath at Othello's foul
Incidentally, Parker and Patrick
are husband and wife, and
be ia brother to Oiivar Parte*.
This ia ooe incidence when nepotism
navs off
^dded note: The name of William
Shakespeare does not appear
in the Meek of oeodite en the publicity
brochure, and onacrean It ia
half the sise of the credit for
adapter Oliver Parker. But then.
Bill doaanl have the Creative
Artists Agency to protect his in
