From The PTA President
Hello Polk Community!
Welcome to 2013! We’ve had quite a school year so far
with a lot more to look forward to!
On Wednesday, January 23 rd we have Heritage Night
along with our Reflections ceremony. Come out and
celebrate our diversity and celebrate the great
accomplishments of our students that participated in the
Reflections program!
We have Group Picture Day on January 25 th and don’t
forget to bring the kids to school on Friday, February 1 st .
It was originally a teacher work day, but it is now a
“Snow” (Hurricane Sandy) make-up day.
Lastly, February 13-15 th will be Parent-teacherconferences.
These are early release days (12:30 PM).
Thank you for all you do! See you around Polk!
Family Fun Night returns March 1st
Family Fun Night is our annual dance party and silent
auction. Save the date for Friday March 1 st . WE NEED
YOUR HELP to make this great event happen! We are
looking for prize donations for the silent auction.
*Do you or someone you know work some place really
cool that is willing to give a tour?
*Do you have a friend who would donate consultation
time for interior design, accounting, legal service, etc.?
*Do you know someone who works at a museum that
is willing to do a "behind the scenes" tour?
*Have you been a loyal customer to a business that
you could ask for a donation (think dry cleaners,
restaurant, boutique, etc.)?
These are just a few ideas. Be creative. All donations
are welcome; nothing is too big or too small! If you can
help donate or solicit prizes for the silent auction, please
Food Drive to Support the Weekend
Bag Program
The Weekend Bag Program provides a supply of
nutritious food for children, commonly for low-income
families, to replace the school meals that children miss
during weekend or extended breaks from school. Last
year, the Polk community banded together to create our
own Weekend Bag Program for a few families over
select long weekend breaks. This year, the Capital Area
Food Bank will be supporting Polk by supplying
Weekend Bags every weekend for several children in
our community.
Your help is still needed and appreciated! Periodically,
we will sponsor food drives to support this program. The
first collection will be after Heritage Night. When you
come to Heritage Night, please consider bringing a food
donation to support this program. If you would like to
donate, some suggestions for kid friendly, shelf stable
foods are tuna packets, pop-top cans of soup, stew, or
pasta, shelf stable milk boxes, raisins, granola bars,
cereal, pop-top cans of fruit or vegetables, and whole
grain crackers. If you have questions or want more
information, please contact our School Social Worker,
Mrs. Whitfield at 703-461-4180.
Just Between Friends Group: To receive PTA e-mail updates, please join the Polk PTA and provide an e-mail address with your PTA payment.
We will add you to the Just Between Friends group. Alternatively, see instructions on the PTA link of the Polk web site at
http://www.acps.k12.va.us/polk/pta-just-between-friends.pdf to join Just Between Friends directly.

clarity and precision. The following students are showing these characteristics and representing their classes this
month. Their names rest on smart owls on the bulletin board outside of the library. They will be recognized on Friday,
February 1 st in the multi-purpose room at 1:30 p.m. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
