ADVERTISING. The Yard Sale will be advertised in
both the Washington Post and the Gazette as well as
local on-line media. Participants may also choose to
place their own signs within Olney Mill, but are
reminded to take them down when the sale is over.
Participants will be given red balloons to tie to their
mailboxes to identify their sale to traffic, pedestrians
and shoppers. The red balloons will be available for
pick up at the Mill House beginning at 8:45 a.m. the
morning of the sale.
REGISTRATION. The addresses of registered homes
will be designated on a “Yard Sale Map,” to be handed
out at the Mill House entrance on the morning of the
sale. The cutoff date for registering is May 16th,
so that time may be allowed to create the participant
map. To register, please either:
• Complete the registration form (located on page
15) and return it to: OMCA Yard Sale, P.O. Box 217,
Olney, MD 20830
• Email your name, address and phone number
(subject line should read “OMCA YARD SALE”) to

SAFETY. This event generates a lot of traffic in the
Mill! Residents are asked to keep their cars in their
garage or driveway, or park them completely off the
street prior to and during the event! Please be careful
of pedestrians crossing the streets.

Board Notes
The Olney Mill Community Association Board of
Directors held its monthly meeting on April 11, 2012.
Summaries of previous meetings may be found in the
Board Notes section of The Mill Stream, which is
available on the Olney Mill Community website at
www.olneymill.net. Upon request, hard copy versions
of the notes are available for review.
TREASURER’S REPORT
As of April 11, 2012, OMCA is $950 favorable to budget.
Renovations to the Mill House are being paid from a
separate reserve fund. There are still 15 homeowners
that have not paid their 2012 dues.
The issue of resale disclosure packets
was raised because one home seller and
real estate agent were unwilling to
provide the packet to a prospective buyer.
Maryland law requires a seller to provide the buyer with
documentation about the homeowner association along
with a resale disclosure form indicating annual
assessments, any special assessments, past due
balances, or architectural control violations. This
disclosure form must be obtained from OMCA. If this
documentation is not provided within the proper time
frame, a buyer has the right to void an agreed-upon
contract. Residents should call the OMCA Hotline at
(301) 231-3739 or email olneymill@yahoo.com to
request a resale package.
PARKS & COMMON AREAS
The OMCA Spring Cleanup held on March 24 was a
big success despite threatening weather.
Approximately 30 volunteers collected trash in the
parks and streams and along roads in Olney Mill. They
ended up with 50 bags of trash and some assorted
auto parts. Thanks to Dennis Twombly for coordinating
the event to all what helped clean up our neighborhood.

The interior and exterior trim of the Mill House have
been painted. The Board discussed different color
options for the Olney Mill sign on the Mill House and
the wheel. A vintage piano was donated to the Mill
House from a Rockville couple who moved out of the
area. It is in good working condition and we look forward
to having some live music for our events.
RECREATION
The Olney Mill Community Yard Sale will
be held on Saturday, May 19 (with a rain
date of May 20). Those interested in
participating should send in their
registrations so their house can be captured on the
map. The deadline for submission is May 16. This
will be the only community yard sale this year.
The Easter Egg Roll had a huge turnout and was a
fantastic family event. It was great to see so many
children participate this year. A photo from the event
was even published in the April 11 issue of the Gazette!
We appreciate all the volunteers and Ginger Twombly’s
coordination of the event.
Planning has begun for the OMCA July 4 Picnic, which
will be on a Wednesday this year. The Board has
submitted permit applications to M-NCPPC for the
picnic to ensure there will not be any interference by
the Duck Pond renovations. The Board discussed the
picnic and several entertainment options. Note that
the picnic is for Olney Mill residents only, and food
should not be removed from the picnic site. SSL hours
will be available for student volunteers. Please call the

able to help with the picnic.
SAFETY & TRANSPORTATION
The OMCA Board has received a steady
stream of complaints that certain groups
of middle school students walking home
from school are vandalizing property, trespassing,
interfering with vehicles, and engaging in other illegal
or destructive behaviors. Several incidents have been
reported to police. Homeowners should call 911 if the
activities are potentially dangerous to the students or
residents. Residents are encouraged to report any
incidents to the Board as well.
A new sidewalk will be constructed on the North side
of Gold Mine Road between Georgia Avenue and Olney

Olney Mill’s Annual
Easter Egg Hunt
With gorgeous spring weather the day after
Easter, Olney Mill families showed up in droves
for our annual Egg Hunt. Led by Ginger Twombly
and a crew of parents and student volunteers,
an estimated 125 children were treated to a
variety of games and contests.
The events began with a “hunt” for over 2,000
plastic eggs filled with small toys and candy.
These were frantically gathered up in less than
four minutes! There was a special area set aside
for our youngest children so they wouldn’t be
overwhelmed by all the big kids! The hunt was
followed by an egg race, egg roll, and egg toss
for different age groups. Winners selected from
a table full of prizes.

OMCA would like to thank all those who
volunteered at the Egg Roll, as well as the parents
and students who helped stuff the plastic eggs
and dye the real eggs in preparation for the
event. A huge thank you to the wonderful student
volunteers who worked very hard to make the
day special for the little kids in the community.

Photography Contests
Nominations are being accepted for the Montgomery
County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT)
annual Keep Montgomery County Beautiful (KMCB)
landscaping and photography competitions.
The 26th Annual Landscape
Contest is open to community
groups, businesses, public
institutions and other organizations
undertaking landscaping projects
that enhance the appearance of
commonly owned sections of
commercial or residential properties in Montgomery
County. Landscaping along County roadsides,
medians, or other public locations is also eligible for
the award.
For the 21st Annual Amateur
Photography Contest, photos of
County locations or residents are
judged on effective composition,
originality, interest and relevance of
the subject matter, and technique.
Subject categories include Montgomery County by day
or by night, County landmarks, people and persons at
work. There is also an optional youth category for those
18 and younger who wish to be judged only against
their peers.
Applications for both contests are due June 22.

Community Clean-Up
At 5:30 a.m. the morning of Olney Mill’s
Community Clean Up, a major thunderstorm with
lightning and high winds rolled through the Olney
area. With weather radar showing a pause in
the rain from 7:00 a.m. through noon, our cleanup
volunteers decided to put on their boots and
“Go For It” instead of putting off the effort
for the following day.
Fewer residents showed up to help, but because
of the greater urgency volunteers still managed
to clean up the parks and some major roadways
in and around Olney Mill. They picked up about
50 full bags of trash from the Family Park
(fields/streams/ponds), Olney swim club area
and adjacent field and volleyball court, Charline
Manor park, Olney Mill House grounds, Reddy
Branch park along woodland edges over to and
around Oakley Cabin, Route 108 and Olney-
Laytonsville Road from Brooke Meadow Lane to
the old OBGC soccer field, Grayheaven Manor
Road, and Brookeville Road from Grayheaven
Manor Road to Georgia Avenue. When it started
raining again at noon, volunteers went over to
the warm and cozy Mill House to enjoy some
well-deserved pizza and soda.
OMCA would like to thank our many dedicated
volunteers for all the help. They didn’t get
everyone’s name in the rush to get started, but
included in the effort were Peter and Louise
Lund; Paul Schneider; Dean, Franka, Lauren, and
Mallory Kimmel; Kevin, Marlo, Katie, Kelly and
Maggie Reese; Nick Moriarty; Dennis, Ginger,
Ian and Lauren Twombly and finally, a special
thank you to Bill Schmidt and Vince and Sue
Parada! They were also pleased to be joined by
Oliver Zheng from Frost Middle School and his
mom, Qing Wang. It’s a great testament to the
volunteer spirit to have someone willing to help
clean up someone else’s community! We would
also like to thank Lynn Vismara and Mike Little
of M-NCPPC for providing the bags and gloves
for the cleanup.

The following is a summary of incidents in the Olney
Mill area as reported by the Montgomery County Police
Department.
• On Thursday, March 1, 2012, police were called
to the 18800 block of Bloomfield Road for
disorderly conduct.
• On Sunday, March 4, 2012, police were called to
the 4200 block of Charley Forest Street for
disorderly conduct.
• On Monday, March 5, 2012, police were called to
the 18500 block of Queen Elizabeth Drive and the
18600 block of Rolling Acres Way for a drug-related
incident.
• On Thursday, March 15, 2012, a theft from a
vehicle occurred in the 4100 block of Olney
Laytonsville Road.

Advertisements in The Mill Stream fall into three
categories: Neighbor-to-Neighbor Ads, Commercial/
Political Ads, and Fliers.
NEIGHBOR-TO-NEIGHBOR ADS
For Sale, Wanted, Lost & Found and Give Aways
advertisements. These ads are free only to Olney Mill
residents and must be submitted with name, phone
number and address included.
Services/Rental advertisements are included in the
“Neighbor to Neighbor” section and are not free. The
cost for these ads is $6 for the first 3 lines, $1 per
each additional line. Daycare providers must submit a
copy of their license and the ad must include the
provider's registration number, in accordance with state
law.
COMMERCIAL/POLITICAL ADS
Commercial/Political ads are available monthly or in
one-year subscriptions, as space permits. These ads
are available in the following sizes:

Pom Camp. The Award Winning
Sherwood High School Pom Squad will
hold a Pom Day Camp for all girls from
grades K-12. The Day Camp will be
held at Sherwood High School on May 5 from 9:00 a.m.
to 12:00 p.m. Registration will be at 8:30 a.m. in the
gymnasium. The cost of the camp is $25/preregistered

attend the Belmont or Cashell Elementary Schools

Olney Home For Life. Olney Home For Life, a
new non-profit, has formed to provide voluntary, nofee
services to seniors and disabled residents in the
Greater Olney Area. Volunteers are needed to provide
transportation to and from medical appointments,
grocery shopping, religious services and community
events. There is no minimum commitment of hours or
trips – volunteer as your schedule allows. Most service
requests involve a scheduled pickup at the requester’s
home, assistance with getting to and into the vehicle,
transport to the destination, assistance with exiting the
vehicle and into the building/facility and pick-up and
return to the requester’s home. Those interested in
volunteering or anyone needing assistance should

Conservation Landscaping
Techniques. Learn how conservationbased
landscaping techniques can
beautify your yard and neighborhood,

Free Plant Clinics. Montgomery
County Master Gardeners will answer
gardening questions at the Olney Farmers
Markets on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
beginning May 13. Bring plant and insect samples,

Mill Road, beginning on or about May 29. A new traffic
light will be installed at the intersection of Bowie Mill
Road and Route 108 with completion scheduled in
September 2012. In addition, repaving of Georgia
Avenue between Randolph Road and Route 28
(Norbeck Road) will begin soon, so residents should
expect significant changes in traffic patterns.
COMMUNICATIONS
The Board discussed the community website and
different options for improvement. They are currently
looking into ways to optimize our site for better
community communication.
GOCA
The Olney Farmer’s Market will return to the MedStar
Montgomery (formerly Montgomery General) Hospital
Thrift Store grounds beginning May 13.
The next OMCA Board meeting is scheduled for
Wednesday, May 9, 2012, in the Community Room of
the Buffington RE/MAX building. All homeowners are

Longtime Olney Mill
resident Bob Cypher, of
Bloomfield Road, passed away
recently. Bob and his wife Carol
moved into Olney Mill in 1969 and
were active for many years with the community
association. They were the first editors of The Mill
Stream and even hand delivered it to Olney Mill
residents (back when there were a lot fewer homes
in the community!) Bob worked for many years as
a toxicologist at the Cancer Research Center in
Frederick, in private industry and at the
Environmental Protection Agency. He is survived by
his loving wife of more than 49 years, Carol.
Bob was a tremendous asset to the Olney Mill
community and will be missed!
