Extended background information should be offered in future for the current TV program by text, picture and video. In addition, it is intended to take direct personal orders with the remote control. HD+ A new sending platform of the satellite operator ASTRA for high resolution contents. The reception of these program offers is currently only with special devices possible (status: 3/31/<strong>2010</strong>). These receivers has a card reader to insert a smartcard for encoded programs. HDCP HDCP is a copy protection which will transmit over every HDMI connection (partly also via DVI). Hard Disk HDD HDD Hard Disc Drive‘s (HDD) are hard disks which are already inserted in a device or can be also connected externally. These can be used to take up or watch time-shifted programs. It exists different hard disk standards as for example SATA or IDE. External hard disks can be run by USB or via special eSATA interfaces. HDMI HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) is a connection for digital saved picture and tone signals which can display this information without loss. The transmitted signals contain a copy protection. HD Ready HDTV HDTV High definition television (HDTV) is a worldwide TV standard for high resolution television and it offers a much better image quality than the former PAL operation. Beside a higher picture resolution the widescreen format 16:9 is also given. There are different HDTV standards with different resolutions, picture frequencies and picture presentations. Minimal requirements for „HD Ready“-display: - HDTV standard 720p 720p (p = „progressives“ full picure): 720 x 1.280; 50/60 Hz = 921.600 pixels - HDTV standard 1080i 1.080i (i = „interlaced“ half picure): 1.080 x 1.920; 50/60 Hz = more than 2 million pixels - HDTV standard 1080p 1.080p (p = „progressives“ full picture): 1.080 x 1920; 50/60 Hz = more than 2 million pixels Hotbird / Eutelsat The „Hotbird“-Satellites of the European satellite operator Eutelsat are the important satelites for Germany. They are aviable on the position 13° east and transmit huge number of foreign radio and television pragrams. This includes free receivable programs and a lot of encoded programs. IDE HDD JPEG The jpeg procedure (Joint Photographic Experts Group) can reduce the need of storage place for pictures of digital cameras without a loss of their high quality.

MPEG is used for example, on DVDs (MPEG-2) and video-CDs (MPEG-1) as well as for Internet files and programmes of the new high resolution television HDTV (MPEG-4). Multi-Switch Is needed to operate with several set top boxes at the same time and to receive its signals from the LNB. ->LNB Network On a network devices can exchange data together. Through this network, for example, movies can be copied up by a DVD recorder with hard disk to edit this data via PC. On Screen-Display (OSD) This displays the basic information which are necessary for the users to configure display/ monitor or TV settings. Optical Digital signals can be transmitted electrically by ➔ coaxial cable or visual by a optical waveguide. A light-emitting diode configures the signals into flash lights which are sent with light-leading fibers in the cable. The most widespread variation is called Toslink (S/P-DIF). OTA (Over The Air) The software of the most set top boxes is further developed and current versions can be put on each device. Many devices also dispose of a practical OTA updating and can receive updates directly via satellite / antenna. ➔ software update. Pay TV Most TV and radio programs can be received unencoded and free of charge. Indeed, there are also Pay TV providers which offers different programs or whole program packages for fees. These Pay TV programs are encoded and can be encrypted only by additional Smart Cards and if necessary other accessories. Progressive Scan Progressive Scan transmits no half pictures (interlaced) but full pictures (full images) in contrast to the PAL television picture . Therefore the picture doesn‘t flicker. PVR-Function / PVR ready PVR means „Personal Video Recorder“ and allows the digital recording of movies. Devices with an installed memory, e.g. a hard disk, can save the recorded programs on this device. „PVR ready“ makes it possible to connect external storage media via an interface on the device. RGB The RGB connection transmits picture signals separately after the colours Red, green, blue. The signals cannot interfere each another. This is the requirement for a high image quality. RS 232 RS 232 is a widespread connection for plugs and connectors from the computer engineering (serial connection). Glossar Scart Scart is the most common connection for television, video recorder and ➔ DVD player/ recorder. It can transmits picture signals (in the formats FBAS, RGB, S-video and YUV), audio and control signals. Set–Top–Box A Set Top Box is a receiver for antenna, cable and satellite signals which cannot receive by the television. Smart Card A Smart Card is the subscription card for payable TV programs which are transmitted encoded. This smartcard has a special access key which can compose the „chopped“ television signal. Software update The operating system of a set top box can be updated by software updates. The present software will be complemented with a new version, improved or removed. S–Video S-video-connections transmit brightness- and colour information in separated cable harness The image quality is better than with FBAS. Page-video-cable (Hosiden) and two Cinch cables are necessary for the separate audio connection. Timeshift Time Shifted Recording: A function that records the present TV program temporarily to play it later from the beginning. USB 1.1/2.0 USB (Universal Serial Bus) is widespread as a computer connection for printers, digital cameras, card readers and MP3-players. The standard USB 2.0 is a newer version and can transfer data very quickly in comparison to a USB 1.1. USB Flash Drive These portable storages can be connected by an USB connection and can be used for a quick and comfortable data transfer. You can save e.g. photos, music or video files on them and use it for all compatible devices. USB Encryption System Pay TV providers encode her programs via different procedures (e.g. Sky uses Nagravision). If you liked to see these programs you will need a decryption module. Also DVDs and video tapes can have an encryption system which should prevent illegal copies (e.g. Macrovision). VGA VGA-video connection (known from the PC technology) can transmit picture signals by computers, satellite receivers or DVD players to video projectors or flat sreens. W-LAN (WLAN) The Wireless LAN - WLAN - allows the wireless integration of WLAN products into a computer network. ➔ Ethernet YUV By this analogous connection (also Y Pb Pr) a very good image quality can transmitted by e.g. DVD player and DVD recorder. YUV transmits separated of each other on one interconnection the brightness information and on two interconnections the color information. Progressiv Scan or HDTV can be also transmitted via YUV.
