Family Thomisidae<br />

The thomisids or crab spiders are mainly dark-bodied, ra<strong>the</strong>r flat hunting spiders with<br />

long strong front legs with which <strong>the</strong>y grapple and hold prey while <strong>the</strong>y feed. Most live on<br />

<strong>the</strong> ground, but <strong>the</strong> widespread Misumena vatia (251), or goldenrod spider, is brightly<br />

coloured and usually found on flowering herbs and shrubs. The family is represented by<br />

17 species in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Yukon</strong>.<br />

Subarctic/Alpine<br />

Distribution: Alaska to western Northwest Territories, south to nor<strong>the</strong>rn British Columbia; Scandinavia,<br />

Swiss Alps, Siberia (Hippa et al. 1986).<br />

<strong>Yukon</strong> records: km 465 Dempster Hwy.; June Cr., near Firth R., British Mts.; Cultus Bay, Kluane<br />

National Park.<br />

<strong>Biological</strong> information: On shrubby tundra and alpine tundra.<br />
