“Let us take care of the children, for they have a long way to go.
Let us take care of the elders, for they have come a long way.
Let us take care of those in between, for they are doing the work.”
This prayer underscores our very mission - providing
stages of life, living in the communities we serve.
The challenges many people and families face today
mirror the challenges many not-for-profit social
service agencies, like ours, also face. We both need
to remain intact and economically
stable, sustain important interpersonal
relationships and enjoy small successes
along the way.
The theme of our report is “Do
you believe in me?” Our work with
children, adolescents, adults and
families focuses on meeting the needs
employment, traumatic experiences from abuse and/or neglect,
living with family violence, and struggling with behavioral/mental
health issues. We are proud of the many program outcomes you
will read about in this report.
Tony and I extend a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our talented and
dedicated staff, board of directors, volunteers, and community
partners who, believing in our mission, worked hard to
strengthen the lives of those who came through our doors for
help. We are grateful for your support and look forward to a
strong and continuing partnership.
Do you believe in me?
At Family Services of Greater Waterbury, we believe in
children. They have great potential, but we know many
are at risk. Our high-quality programs address the needs
of children who have experienced abuse and/or neglect,
their biological parents and their foster or adoptive
parents, as well.
Chapman House
Chapman House, our Safe Home, which can serve eight
children at one time, served 27 children last year who
stayed an average of 104 days each. The children, ages
three to 12, had been removed from their homes by the
Connecticut Department of Children and Families
because of abuse and/or neglect.
85% of children served in
all our programs have
experienced family violence.
Our childcare professionals do their best to make
Chapman House a real home for the children. They
are involved in every aspect of the children’s lives.
Additional services are provided as needed by social
workers, child psychiatrists and nurses. While they
are with us at Chapman House every child receives
a full medical, dental, and psychosocial evaluation
so that an individualized plan for the child can be
created so the child can move into a loving home.
Motheread/Fatheread
Motheread/Fatheread is an award-winning
national program that combines the teaching
of literacy skills with child development and
family empowerment by focusing on parents
as the primary teachers of young children.
This year 12 adults and more than 25 children
participated in the program.
