THE CAPiTAL CENTEr
Entering its seventh year, The Capital Center is a 126,000-square-foot recreational and athletic
complex that includes a 2,100-seat arena, a 3,000-seat Bernlohr Stadium, a 51,000-square-foot
multipurpose forum, a 5,000-square-foot fitness center, and a multitude of offices, classrooms and
hospitality areas.
The 2,100-seat arena is home to the women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball
programs. The arena has a pair of hospitality suites, a pair of broadcast booths and a camera booth
with approximately 175 chair-back stadium seats and the remaining bleacher seating.
Football and men’s and women’s soccer play on a state-of-the-art artificial surface called AstroPlay in
the 3,000-seat Bernlohr Stadium. Within a brick grandstand are two observation decks, a hospitality
suite and press box. The stadium includes a three-lane track around the field perimeter for fitness and
recreation endeavors.
Functionality and usability are the key in the multipurpose forum, as the infield of the NCAA regulation
indoor track has four courts with lines for basketball, volleyball and tennis. Suspended from the ceiling
is netting that can split the area into a multitude of configurations for a variety of events, as well as a
pair of hitting cages for baseball, softball and golf. Part of the forum also makes up 1,200 square feet
of the fitness center with a complete cardiovascular area, filled with treadmills, Stairmasters and a
universal unit. The remaining 3,800 square feet of the fitness center is a room complete with weight
training equipment from Hammer Strength.
The health and sport sciences department calls The Capital Center home with a complete sports
medicine and athletic training center, sports science laboratory, classrooms and more than ample
space for activity classes. The athletic department also has an office suite with a conference room
and administrative work areas.
Like many facilities, it is the small things that separate the adequate from the memorable. The Capital
Center with its towers of brick and plaster, terrazzo flooring, hand-painted tile, skylights and enormous
walls of glass not only pays homage to the tradition and architecture of the 177-year-old university,
but also provides a functional and modern place for the university to reach new horizons.
Capital’s vision has been simple – to have a center that is an integral part of university life,
encompassing health and wellness activities, academic programs, intercollegiate athletics, intramural
sports, social activities and community partnerships. The Capital Center embodies that vision and is
a testament to the dedication, values and commitment to service of the entire CAP Family. To those
past, present and future members of the CAP Family we only have one thing to say – Welcome Home.
2007 Preview
Capital University volleyball team hopes three is a charm as 11 letterwinners and all but one starter
return from a squad that has made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last two seasons
and ended last season ranked No. 24 in the nation.
While 15th-year head coach Pam Briggs has plenty of experience, her roster features just one senior
in middle hitter Jesse Hampson. Hampson, the 2005 OAC Player of the year, will be looked at to lead
the Crusaders on and off the court. Along with Hampson, other top returners include juniors Heidi
rose, Kelly Steineman and Kara Guster, along with sophomores Sarah Gallik, Allison Hostetler and
Jenna Zumberger.
Junior Jackie Helm, the 2004 OAC Freshman of the year, returns after being sidelined with an injury
all last season to bolster the Capital lineup.
Pam BRiggs
HEAd COACH
Many things get better as time goes by and Capital University’s
volleyball program, under 15th-year head coach Pam Briggs,
is no exception.
A year ago, the Crusaders made their second-straight appearance in
the NCAA Tournament and earned the program’s first NCAA Tournament
win. Two years ago, Briggs led Capital to its first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament
crown and earmed OAC Coach of the year honors for the third time in her career, as well as AvCA
regional Coach of the year honors.
After three years as an assistant coach and 14 years on the Capital bench, she has established
the Crusaders as one of the top programs in not only the OAC but the region. Aside from the
tournament success the last two years, Briggs’ teams have won the 1996 and 2003 OAC regular
season titles.
Aside from team success, Briggs has coached some of the OAC’s best players, as her program
has had the OAC Player of the year four times and the OAC Freshman of the year twice. Her teams
have been equally as impressive in the classroom, winning numerous Academic All-OAC, Academic
All-district and Academic All-American honors with two players being named national Academic
All-American of the year.
The reynoldsburg, Ohio, native was a four-year letter winner and team captain of the Kent State
University volleyball squad. Following her playing career at KSU, Briggs spent two seasons as an
assistant volleyball coach at reynoldsburg High School (1987-88) and three seasons as an assistant
at Capital (1989-92).
Along with her volleyball coaching duties at Capital, Briggs also serves as the head women’s golf
coach and an instructor for the health and sports science department.
Crusaders Volleyball team makes
more strides in 2006
For the second-straight season, Capital University’s volleyball program continued its ascension into
the national spotlight. The Crusaders made their second-straight and second-ever appearance in the
NCAA volleyball Championship and won the school’s first match in postseason play, a 3-2 victory over
Coe (iowa) College.
Though the team lost in the second round against top regional seed and No. 2 nationally Washington
(Mo.) University, Capital finished its season with a 26-10 record overall and set several milestones
along the way.
The Crusaders, who finished third in the Ohio Athletic Conference, ended the season ranked No. 24
in the nation. Head coach Pam Briggs won her 300th career match in October and led the team
to its fifth straight 25-plus win season, while a trio of talented seniors in Jordan Centers, Heather
Kwiatkowski and Marie Zumberger also left their marks on the program.
Centers led the team in kills (512) and also tied a school record with 127 games played. She was
named First-Team All-OAC, AvCA Second Team All-American, Academic All-OAC and First Team
Academic All-district. Zumberger ends her career as the school’s all-time leader in digs (1,986)
and single-season digs (892). She was named Second Team All-OAC and Academic All-OAC.
Kwiatkowski, the lone senior to spend all four years in the program, ends her Capital career among
the school leaders in games played.
Junior Jessie Hampson continued her solid play in a Crusader uniform. Hampson, the 2005 OAC
Player of the year, was named First Team All-OAC, AvCA Second Team All-American, Academic
All-OAC and Second Team Academic All-district. She led the OAC with a .335 hitting percentage and
total blocks. Her 447 kills ranked second on the team and she also ranked second with 321 digs.
Three sophomores, Kara Guster, Heidi rose and Kelly Steineman, all saw extended playing time.
Guster was an All-OAC honorable mention selection, who led the team in assists (581), while rose
and Steineman both were among the team leaders in blocks. Freshmen Sarah Gallik, Allison Hostetler
and Jenna Zumberger also provided a glimpse of the future. Gallik and Hostetler were third and fourth
on the team in kills, while Hostetler tallied 139 blocks, the second most on the team. Zumberger’s
478 assists also ranked second-best on the team.
Jordan Centers played in a
school-record 127 games in 2006
as she led the Crusaders in kills on
her way to All-American honors.
Capital University enters its 81st season as a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2007-2008.
The OAC is the nation’s third-oldest collegiate athletic conference and from its beginnings in 1902
has never wavered in its focus on the entire development of the student-athlete. The conference’s
unparalleled success of all of its members on and off the playing field has made the OAC one of the
nation’s finest college conferences.
The OAC is predated only by the Michigan intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten
(1895). The OAC is older than the rose Bowl, the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has
survived two world wars, the Great depression, the Korean War and the vietnam Conflict. From a
modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the
mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been
members of the OAC. Currently, the conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace College,
Capital University, Heidelberg College, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College,
Muskingum College, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College.
Case Tech’s football team won the OAC’s first conference title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track
was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a conference sport in 1914. More
sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition
of women’s sports in 1984. The OAC currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s
and 10 women’s. All 10 of the OAC institutions were founded in the 19th century and have long and
outstanding academic reputations.
While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and
athletes consistently have enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic
competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.
The entire CAP Family has and continues to embrace the fine athletic and academic values that make
the OAC one of the finest conferences in the nation.
