DOMO ® SPORTS GRASS
hISTORy
Europeans encountered the first generation of artificial
grass at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. These artificial
grass surfaces, made of nylon or polyamide fibres with a
high density, were suitable for hockey and tennis, but not
for sports that involved sliding, such as soccer.
In 1983 Domo ® Sports Grass develops its first artificial
grass for hockey: a second-generation artificial grass,
with longer, less-dense fibres made of polypropylene; the
sand infill increases stability. This remains a top product
to this day.
The first Domo ® soccer pitch made of polyethylene yarn
followed in 1988, and contrasted sharply with older
artificial grasses: it was much softer and resistant against
UV radiation and cold. The first pitch is laid in Siberia.
In 2000 Domo ® Sports Grass introduces the third
generation of artificial grass pitches: made of polyethylene,
but now infilled with sand and rubber. The stability and
elasticity improve the playing qualities, and sliding is no
longer a problem. FIFA approves these pitches for training
and competition.
In 2003 Domo ® Sports Grass combines the benefits of
monofilament and fibrillated yarns into a unique yarn
combination, and patents this invention. It is used in the
VarioSlide Excellence artificial grass. With this, Domo ®
receives its first FIFA* certificate for the pitch at Club
Brugge.
In 2006 Domo ® Sports Grass files a second patent for a
new yarn - SPR. This contains two different polymers, and
is propeller-shaped. It offers more resistance to wear and
is more elastic. Through the use of multicoloured yarns, the
grass now also looks more natural. This quality bears the
name VarioSlide Supreme.
The most recent innovation from Domo ® Sports Grass
dates from 2009: an unfilled grass football pitch with
a new profiled yarn - Domo ® Champion Ascari. This
fourth-generation artificial grass has all the advantages
of its predecessors and scores even higher in the wear
and resilience tests. The absence of rubber infill makes
installation, maintenance and recycling easier.
FIFA QuAlIty ConCept
With the introduction of the third generation of artificial grass pitches, the process of accepting artificial
grass got fully under way within the football world. Under the approving eye of FIFA, soccer’s international
governing body, specific quality standards have been laid down for artificial grass pitches in the International
Artificial Turf Standard (FIFA Quality Concept). As a result, these artificial grass pitches can now also be used
in competitions. Find all you need to know about artificial grass, standardisation and FIFA-certified pitches
on the FIFA website. You can view all the Domo ® Sports Grass pitches that have been approved by FIFA by
Club brugge, belgium, Domo ® VarioSlide Excellence 2003.
Club Brugge has had a Domo ® artificial grass pitch since 2003. This pitch is used intensively, and to date they are extremely
satisfied with it. “We have long been aware of the potential of artificial grass pitches. But this pitch exceeds all our expectations.
We compared the various artificial grass pitches on the market and after thorough research Domo ® Sports Grass was the most
attractive option.” Dr. Michel D’Hooghe, Chairman of FIFA’s medical committee.
UCT, South Africa, Domo ® VarioSlide Supreme, 2009.
With an eye on the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, the University of Cape Town installed the first football pitch to comply with
FIFA** technical specifications. This pitch gives UCT a perfect playing surface in all weathers with an unlimited number of playing
hours using a shock-absorbing layer, an extensive drainage system and with pitch dimensions for major international games.
The “South African Premier League”, SANTOS, already trains on the pitch, and they are highly enthusiastic about its technical
playing qualities.
billerbeck, Germany, Domo ® VarioSlide S PRO, 2009.
VfL Billerbeck chose the latest VarioSlide S PRO product. The club had already seen a number of pitches of the VarioSlide type,
and was highly enthusiastic about this top technical playing product. UEFA Pro-Coach Dieter Tartemann also provided positive
advice about this type of grass mat, with which he has several years’ experience. The Billerbeck pitch was created to satisfy the
strictest FIFA requirements, namely FIFA 2STAR, and could therefore also be used without any problem for international competition.
Thanks to the particularly sophisticated system concept with a hi-tech underlayer, playing properties can be guaranteed
in almost all weathers. For years, Billerbeck has also been the permanent base of operations for various big clubs in Germany,
including FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04. Both youth teams and the first team will therefore definitely get the chance to try out this
very latest development in artificial grass for football.
DOMO ® SPORTS GRASS
DoMo ® slIDe Ds - Diamond shape yarn
100% monofilament grass mat with sand and rubber infill
A monofilament is a yarn that is extruded directly in a specific shape, which gives it a certain strength and also elasticity.
These qualities were recognised by official bodies such as UEFA and FIFA as high grade. The standards for FIFA* and
FIFA** were successfully satisfied.
This year, Domo ® Sports Grass is also available with a new monofilament football system, Domo ® Slide DS. This
product has been specially developed to provide the best in terms of durability and playing properties. Slide DS is
also a top football product at a highly competitive price.
1. superb playing comfort thanks to
the diamond profile
The grass fibres remain nice and straight thanks to the
sand and rubber infill. As a result, the grass mat carries
the ball, as it were, making it easier for players to get their
foot under it. The roll and speed of the ball on natural
grass are equalled, if not bettered. Thanks to the unique
diamond profiling of the yarn, the grass fibre springs
back into place immediately after impact. The dense
structure of this grass mat (>100,000 filaments/m²)
ensures that the rubber is held firmly in place.
2. outstanding durability thanks to
the diamond profile
The diamond profile guarantees outstanding durability.
In the LISPORT set-up, a test set-up for checking wear
resistance, the fibre remains intact after 30,000 cycles.
This equates to 15 years of normal football play.
3. High uV stability thanks to the
diamond profile
Domo ® Slide DS is perfectly suited to countries where
the sun shines a lot. Thanks to the massive diamond
profile (thickness 250 µm), this grass mat is extremely
UV-stable.
4. easy to infill thanks to the diamond
profile
Domo ® Slide DS is produced with a stiff fibre, which
ensures that sand and rubber are easy to fill.
5. test reports. Domo ® slide Ds has
been tested to all major standards:
• FIFA Quality Concept (this quality easily meets the
requirements of FIFA 1- and 2-star tests)
DoMo ® - Heliflex technology
HelIFleX teCHnolGy - buIlt-In resIlIenCe
After many years’ research, in 2009 we succeeded in creating a controllable helix or spiral
shape in a propeller monofilament. This HELIFLEX TECHNOLOGY creates the ultimate grass
mat with unmatched resilience.
The propeller profile guaranteed the necessary resilience. This has now been further improved
by a cleverly built-in spiral technology. When vertical, the spiral yarn is at rest, but as soon
as lateral or downward pressure is exerted the yarn comes under tension, and will want to
spring back upright into its natural resting position as quickly as possible.
By applying this to the entire surface, a pitch is created in which the grass yarns always
spring up nice and straight, thereby guaranteeing the playing properties of ball “ball roll”
and “foot under the ball”.
The helix shape retains the water for longer after a shower, allowing the pitch to cool down
more and guaranteeing a safer, more agreeable game.
This new technology is used in the new quality Domo ® Champion S PRO and
DoMo ® CHAMpIon s pro - Heliflex technology
100% Monofilament grass mat with sand and rubber infill
In addition to the monofilament “Slide” grass mat, Domo® has also introduced a top-grade monofilament with a
new yarn combination.
1. A natural appearance thanks to
Heliflex
Artificial grass should always try and approach the appearance
of natural grass as much as possible. The colours
used for Champion S PRO are a perfect match for
the shades of natural grass. The grass fibres remain nice
and straight thanks to the profiling of the yarn, the Heliflex
technology and the sand and rubber infill.
2. outstanding ball roll and “foot
under the ball” thanks to Heliflex
Heliflex technology ensures that the yarn always
springs back up nice and straight after each bounce or
impact. As a result, the grass mat carries the ball, as it
were, making it easier for players to get their foot under
it. The roll and speed of the ball on natural grass are
equalled, if not bettered.
3. outstanding wear resistance thanks
to advanced polymers
Lab wear tests show that thanks to the use of advanced
polymers and special profiling of the monofilament with
a thickness up to 300 µm, this grass mat is extremely
hard-wearing. This unique yarn combination easily passes
the 30,000 cycle LISPORT test, equivalent to around
15 years of normal football play.
4. shorter installation time thanks to
Heliflex
Thanks to the Heliflex technology, the yarn stands perfectly
upright after being rolled out, which means it
does not need brushing before the infill is added. This
operation can therefore be ignored during installation.
This saves a lot of time.
Heliflex and profiled film
Grass mat with sand and rubber infill
The VarioSlide product line is a revolutionary artificial grass with a very natural appearance that is hard-wearing.
From a technical playing perspective, these are top products. They use the unique “Duo Yarn System” patented by
Domo ® . Duo Yarn System stands for a 100% propeller monofilament grass surface to which a second type of yarn
is added, creating extra added value.
The new VarioSlide S PRO generation uses the Heliflex technology reinforced with a hi-tech profiled film. The
fibrillated yarn from the previous VarioSlide generation has been replaced by a hard-wearing ribbed film. This film
ensures a number of unique extra benefits on the pitch.
1. looks just like natural grass
People want artificial grass to look like natural grass. The grass fibres remain nice and straight thanks to the profiling
of the yarn, the Heliflex technology and the sand and rubber infill. Sunlight is reflected just like on natural grass. The
colours used are a perfect match for the shades of natural grass. VarioSlide S PRO looks exactly like natural grass.
2. outstanding playing comfort
guaranteed, outstanding “ball
roll” and “foot under the ball”
Heliflex technology ensures that the yarn always
springs back up nice and straight after each bounce or
impact. As a result, the grass mat carries the ball, as it
were, making it easier for players to get their foot under
it. The roll and speed of the ball on natural grass are
equalled, if not bettered.
3. outstanding wear resistance
Lab wear tests show that thanks to the use of advanced
polymers and special profiling of the monofilament with
a thickness up to 300 µm, this grass mat is extremely
hard-wearing. This unique yarn combination easily
passes the 30,000 cycle LISPORT test, equivalent to
4. shorter installation time thanks to
Heliflex
Thanks to the Heliflex technology, the yarn stands
perfectly upright after being rolled out, which means it
does not need brushing before the infill is added. This
operation can therefore be ignored during installation,
thereby saving a lot of time. The monofilm is not yet
split when installed, which allows the pitch to easily be
filled with sand and rubber. The film will later split when
used, thus fulfilling its protective function.

DOMO ® SPORTS GRASS
DoMo ® VArIoslIDe s pro -
Heliflex and profiled film
Grass mat with sand and rubber infill
5. no displaced rubber
The profiled monofilm holds the rubber infill in place,
preventing it from being displaced during play and
keeping the pitch nice and level.
6. Cooler pitch
The tips of the profiled monofilm split when the pitch is
used, forming a perfect protective layer for the rubber
infill. Sunlight does not come into direct contact with the
rubber, thus preventing long-term heating of the grass
mat. The helix shape also ensures that less sunlight hits the
filament, which means the grass mat heats up less. This
helix shape also ensures that the water (after a shower) is
retained for longer, allowing the pitch to cool down more.
This helps prevent burns during intensive use.
7. Maintenance-friendly thanks to
profiled monofilm
A Domo ® VarioSlide pitch requires regular brushing.
Topping up with rubber and sweeping are limited by
the profiled monofilm net that holds the rubber infill
in place and keeps it level during brushing, or when
clearing the snow from a pitch.
DOMO ® SPORTS GRASS
DoMo ® CHAMpIon AsCArI XC 32M
unfilled grass mat
the new generation of artificial grass
Domo ® Champion Ascari ushers in a new generation of artificial grass fields. Champion Ascari gives the player a
peerlessly natural feeling and makes technically high-quality football possible in all weather conditions. This unfilled
grass football pitch with its new profiled yarn, NATURAL RESILIENCE SYSTEM, exclusively from Domo ® , has all the
advantages of previous generations of grass and scores even higher in wear and resilience tests. This top product
consists of two types of yarn, straight grass yarns that are supported in a bed of texturised yarns. The absence of
rubber infill makes installation, maintenance and recycling easier.
1. Colour and shape inspired by
nature
NRS, Natural Resilience System, an exclusively
developed grass yarn, ensures that Champion Ascari
has a very natural look. The profile of the yarn is
inspired by natural blades of grass: a veined structure
with a thicker vein in the middle. The wide range of
shades of green of the fibres gives the Champion Ascari
a peerlessly natural quality.
2. outstanding playing comfort
• Constant ball roll and a ‘natural’ trapping
technique.
Thanks to the Natural Resilience System, the ball
rolls as if on natural grass. The grass yarn stands
up perfectly straight without filling due to its
specific profiling and the close construction of the
grass surface. This allows for a ‘natural’ trapping
technique. The ball is carried by the fibres, allowing
the foot to easily ‘get under the ball’ to make a long
pass or trap a high ball. The grass yarn also springs
back perfectly after each time it is pressed down. In
addition, and in contrast to natural grass, the playing
properties remain constant throughout the year. After
all, on a natural grass pitch the ball rolls less far in
the summer than in the winter, which players do not
always find easy to anticipate.
• Cooler pitch
The absence of rubber infill means the pitch heats up
much less and also does not retain heat. The specific
profiling of the grass yarn also retains moisture better,
allowing the field to cool naturally.
• no displaced rubber
Champion Ascari is non-filled, so displaced rubber
grains are now definitively a thing of the past.
• no rubber odour
Champion Ascari is non-filled, so rubber smells are
no more.
3. outstanding wear resistance
A Domo ® Champion Ascari pitch possesses outstanding
wear resistance. The Lisport test has shown that even
after 22,000 cycles, equivalent to 10 years of normal
football play, there is still no splitting of the grass fibres.
This is an outstanding score.
4. Minimal maintenance
Topping up with rubber and sweeping are no longer
necessary. The pitch has to be brushed only once a
week, depending on how often it is used. Maintenance
costs are therefore minimal.
5. ecologically sound
The absence of rubber filling makes this artificial grass
outstandingly environmentally friendly. If the pitch ever
has to be replaced, the costs are limited and it can
easily be recycled.
6. Faster installation
Because no rubber has to be added, installation is
quicker. If time is a crucial factor, this can be very
important to the success of a project.
DOMO ® SPORTS GRASS
CONSTRUCTION
Domo ® Sports Grass believes strongly in the importance
of having a high-quality foundation on which to lay the artificial
grass. A good foundation and an appropriate sand
and rubber infill if required result in a high-quality pitch
that requires little maintenance, is safe for players and
can be played on at all times. The foundation consists of
several layers, is porous and frost-resistant. The drainage
pipes in the bottom layer are covered with a draining and
stabilising bed of sand. On top of this is a 40 cm layer of
stones. A shock pad can be installed on top of this which
guarantees the dynamic playing qualities. This layer can
be adapted according to requirements. If no shock pad is
used, it is advisable to install a geotextile layer. This ensures
the pressure on the foundation is evenly distributed
and also protects the artificial grass.
The first infill consists of sand, is porous and provides stability.
On top of this is a rubber layer which ensures good
sliding properties and provides elasticity.
