Posh Dosh for Posh Boys – The Sunday Times Rich List and How they support the Tory Party
A report published at the GMB Congress in Brighton on 13 June 2012 shows that 248 out of the top
1,000 in the Sunday Times Rich List are Tory supporters who have financially supported the Tory
Party with donations totalling £83, 659,167. These 248 have assets totalling £114,498 millions. The
names of the 248 Rich List donors ranked by position on the Rich List are set out in the attached
pages.
This information is drawn from a GMB analysis of The Sunday Times Rich List for 2012 and looked at
political donation by individuals on the list, by companies they controlled and donations by family
members. The information on political donations was drawn from The Electoral Commission and the
Register of Members Interest and covers the period from 2001 until May 2012.
The top 20 Tory donors from the Rich List ranked by position in the rich list is shown in the table
below.
Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary commenting on the report said “It is clear that the wealthy look
to the Tory Party to protect their interests and they have been repaid with policies like the change in
Income Tax, down from 50p to 45p. This is not philanthropy. It is an investment by an elite in an elite
to look after their interests.
These revelations that the Tory Party is funded to such an extent by the rich and elite of our country is
a shocking indictment of the real allegiance of the Tory Party.
Whilst complaining about working people donating to the Labour Party via Trade Unions in an open
and transparent system the Tory Party has had over £83m from the elite of the Sunday Times Rich
List.

248 of the country’s super-rich - most of them worth hundreds of millions of pounds ranging from the
aristocracy to hedge fund managers with caravan park owners thrown in - have been quietly
bankrolling the Tory Parties raising serious questions in whose interest they govern. This is Posh
Dosh for the Posh Boys.
At a time when working families are being hammered it is sickening to see the vested interests of
these multi-millionaires getting tax breaks.”
