a word from leoni 

Sitting in one of St Albans many lovely pubs with Donato, discussing the next film we were going 

to make, the gem of the film festival idea was born… inspired on my part by visits over a lifetime 

to fun festivals (film & music), arts fairs, theatre productions, cinema screenings and workshops, 

we thought St Albans could do with the same. The wealth of talent in the area is too huge to 

ignore and the heritage of filmmaking strong. 

So the vision is finally upon us and I would like to extend a huge warm welcome to visitors to 

the very first annual St Albans Film Festival. I hope you enjoy the weekend of events and are 

welcomed by our open-hearted city folk and fantastic team of ‘Festival Makers’. 

There is something for all ages and tastes, but the real gems of this festival are the short films 

in our competition so make sure you catch at least one short film programme. In the run up to the 

event Mike Newell will be introducing his feature ‘Great Expectations’ in The Abbey on 28th Feb 

and Lussmans restaurant will be holding special sustainable food & film Dinners 5th – 7th March 

with VIP Guests including Sunday Times columnist and Chairman of The Blue Marine Foundation 

Charles Clover – both yummy & good for the planet! For those seeking the glitz & glamour of 

the event I hope you will join me at our opening launch party at Cafe Rouge & closing awards 

ceremony at Club Havana. 

During your visit, you may find yourself sat a while in one of the city’s pubs and feel that idea 

forming in your head, it does that to you St Albans…so grab a pen, write it down and see your 

visions come to life too.

COMEDY - RATED 15. DIR. SARA SUGARMAN - Vinyl will open the Festival 

on March 8th. Directed by Sara Sugarman, and starring Phil Daniels, Keith 

Allen, Perry Benson and up and coming young actor. Jamie Blackley, this 

will be Vinyl’s British premiere ahead of its UK-wide release a week later 

and stars of the film will be attending. Q&A session after the film.

A fun, practical workshop in which you will be introduced to working with professional actors.

with a festival pass, any age can be interviewed. This documentary about Mothers, starring YOU will be 

edited live on the Sunday and screened that very same weekend, on Mother’s Day.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO EDITING 


Know how to pick up a camera and press record but can’t get your film past that stage? Come and 

learn the basics of editing a film. This is for any age - child or adult and will helo you turn all those 

film clips into a movie, with a soundtrack. 

HOW TO MAKE AN AMAZING MUSIC VIDEO

An interactive session where the energetic Simon Wan 

(of Supermassive) takes you into his wonderful world of 

Music Video making . Understand how the landscape has 

changed with the invention of YouTube and cheap 

equipment and try out techniques to make a great

BARRY PURVES - TALK ON PUPPETS

Animator and director Barry Purves is passionate about the art of animation. His work includes: 

Chorlton & The Wheelies, Rupert Bear, Wind in the Willows, King Kong, and currently Channel Five’s 

Toby’s Travelling Circus. Barry will talk about Puppets - how they are used, and why we still have a 

need for them, and why CG hasn’t totally replaced them. Plus get to meet some of his puppets and 

see some of his Bafta and Oscar nominated short films. 

LIVE DJ AND MC SET - CASUAL BREAKIN AND SUPERMASSIVE 


Casual Breakin’ began his turntablism in the heady rave days, starting on pirate radio stations, 

illegal raves and now is a regular face on the London breaks and electro dance music scene, 

smashing up air waves, clubs and carnivals alike. Also chief music ReMasher for ‘The Hungerpod’ 

a twice monthly podcast for Rankin’s über slick fashion and style bible. Casual Breakin’s mastery 

of mixology will make you smile, make you laugh and most certainly make you wanna shake a tail

Exclusive and unheard stories about The Shining from the people who helped make it. The interviews form part 

of “The Elstree Project” - a collaboration between Elstree Screen Heritage and the University of Hertfordshire.
