Dear Parishioners,
This year gives us a great opportunity to pray for our clergy and
for vocations since the year 2009 has been designated by his
Holiness Benedict XVI as “The Holy Year for Priests.
Benedict XVI highlighted the “indispensable struggle for moral
perfection which must dwell in every truly priestly heart. In order
to favor this tendency of priests towards spiritual perfection, upon
which the effectiveness of their ministry principally depends, I
have”, he said, “decided to call a special ‘Year for Priests’ which
will run from 19 June 2009 to 19 June 2010”. This year marks
“the 150th anniversary of the death of the saintly ‘Cure of Ars’,
Jean Marie Vianney, a true example of a pastor at the service of
Christ’s flock”. Benedict XVI stressed the need to “have care for
the formation of candidates to the priesthood”, a formation that
must maintain “communion with unbroken ecclesial tradition,
without pausing or being tempted by discontinuity. In this
context, it is important to encourage priests, especially the young
generations, to a correct reading of the texts of Vatican Council
II, interpreted in the Light of all the Church’s doctrinal
inheritance”. Priests must be “present, identifiable and
recognizable - for their judgment of faith, personal virtues and
attire - in the fields of culture and of charity which have always
been at the heart of the Church’s mission”. “The centrality of
Christ Leads to a correct valuation of priestly ministry, without
which there would be no Eucharist, no mission, not even the
Church. It is necessary then, to ensure that ‘new structures’ or
pastoral organizations are not planned for a time in which it will
be possible to ‘do without’ ordained ministry, on the basis of an
erroneous interpretation of the promotion of the laity, because this
would lay the foundations for a further dilution in priestly
ministry, and any supposed ‘solutions’ would, in fact,
dramatically coincide with the real causes of the problems
currently affecting the ministry”.
The Holy See has established a plenary indulgence for all the
faithful for the first Thursday of every month. Those who
devoutly attend Mass, have made a sacramental confession within
a week or so before or after the first Thursday, have offered
prayers to Jesus Christ for priests of the Church, and any other
good work may receive the plenary indulgence.
It is our hope that the above information wilt encourage you to
pray for holy priests and vocations. You are especially humbly
request to pray for both Fr. Sam and Fr. Gerry.

16 th Sunday of Ordinary Time Reflections:
We are in many ways a weary people. People are tired these days.
We are over-worked, over-committed, over-extended, stretched-
thin, stressed-out, and burnt-out. We are too busy, we are too tired,
and we will tell you about it. It seems like there is some kind of
strange competition going on where we try to outdo each other
with how busy and how tired we are. In a curious way, busyness
has become a socially desirable good.
The pace of modern life we can hear keyboards clicking and
computers crunching and cell phones chirping with their
instantaneous messages around the globe. Some of us are
occupying our time by either text messaging or answering cell
calls to the tune of 70 or more times per day. Technology has not
led to more leisure time for Americans instead most people are
busier than ever. In so many ways we are a tired and weary
people.
In our gospel lesson, Jesus addresses the weariness and busyness
of his apostles. The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him
all that they were doing, and all that they were teaching, and,
apparently, they were very busy. They were so busy, that they
didn’t even have time to eat. So many people were coming and
going that they didn’t even have a chance to grab something on the
go. So Jesus’ words to them must have felt like cool, refreshing
water when He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all
by yourselves and rest a while.”
How refreshing this response must have been to his weary
disciples. Notice Jesus didn’t respond to the apostles’ reports
about what they were doing by going over a new plan. No. He
said to his weary apostles, “Come away to a deserted place all by
yourselves and rest a while.”
Don’t we all long to hear these words spoken to us by our Lord?
Don’t we all desire to hear the invitation to come to a place all by
ourselves and simply rest a while in the presence of our gracious
God?
No doubt our faith requires us to do certain things as well as
believe certain things. No doubt we are created to find meaning
and value in the work we do, especially when it is done to the
greater glory of God and the service and up-building of our
neighbors. But our weariness in what we do and our pervasive
busyness are signs that something isn’t quite right.
When the apostles gathered around Jesus, they told him all that
they were doing and all that they were teaching. They were so
busy, so many people were coming and going, they didn’t even
have time to eat. And Jesus said to them, “Come away to a
deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.”
Our Lord knows what we need, even when we do not. When we
gather around him, we may want to tell him all the things we have
done and all the things we have taught others. We hold up before
him our busyness and our weariness as objects worthy of praise
and reward. We tell him that we have been so busy that we haven’t
even had time to eat. And we say to ourselves, surely all these
things will prove how important and valuable we are.
And our gracious Lord looks past all our illusions and he doesn’t
even mention them, because if he did, he would have to remind us
that all that we are and all that we do are gifts from God in the first
place. Rather, he looks into our hearts and sees what we truly
desire, what we truly need. He makes us lie down in green
pastures and leads us beside the still waters and restores our souls.
And he says to us, “Come away to a place all by yourselves and
rest a little while with me.”

Baptism, and in unusual cases, Confirmation.
In addition, Fr. Sam is required to supply an affidavit of
Catholicity for those seeking to be a witness or sponsor for the
sacrament of Baptism or Confirmation at a parish other than
St. Anthony’s.
If you are a registered member of St. Anthony of Padua Fr.
Gene may also give you permission to be baptized or married
at another parish.
The traditional method of keeping the pastor informed that
you are a practicing Catholic, a member of the parish, and of
the proper age requirement is through records that are on file
in the Parish Office. Registration and the consistent use of
envelopes verifies that you are an active parishioner who
frequently attends Mass and other services.
While your contributions are important and help support our
parish, the amount of your contribution does not influence the
affidavit.

RELIGIOUS ED. NEWS:
Registration forms for Religious Education classes for 2009-2010
have been mailed home to all of our families who were registered
with us this past year. We have also mailed home forms to new
inquiries. If you need a registration form they are available on the
table at Centennial High School after Mass, at the Parish Office,
or you may call the office at 399-6897, and we will mail one to
you.
RCIA/C: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and Children
The RCIA is the process which teaches and prepares men and women
for reception into the Catholic Church.
Who is a candidate for RCIA?
1. An unbaptized person.
2. A person baptized in another Christian faith.
3. A person baptized Catholic, not raised in the faith and have
never received First Holy Communion or Confirmation.
What happens?
1. Inquiry: the introductory stage.
2. Catechumenate: a time of spiritual and intellectual growth
after the Rite of Acceptance (Advent).
3. Election: during Lent; the final preparations leading to
receiving the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil.
4. Mystagogy: A folow-up period which includes full
participation at Sunday Mass.
How long does it take?
The sessions run like the school year. Meetings start in October
and end in May. We meet on Sundays from 8 AM- 10 PM at CHS.
What about children?
Children who are 7 years and older must go through the RCIC
program. This is done in addition to attending Religious Education
classes.
What do I do next?
Anyone interested in the RCIA program for the 2009-2010 year,
should contact the Religious Education Office for an application.
