2008 was a year of exciting new beginnings for Keep
Indianapolis Beautiful! On May 15, 2008, KIB was the lead
nonprofit partner for the Inaugural Lilly Day of Service, when
over 8,000 Lilly employees planted trees, painted murals,
removed invasive plants, and beautified Indianapolis in a oneday
makeover. This is a tremendous new initiative for KIB, and
we are thrilled to partner with Lilly to make such a great impact
on the city, in 2008 and in years to come.

We also were fortunate to move into our new home on June 19, 2008. Our new green building, located at 1029 Fletcher Ave. in
Fountain Square, is a place where we can put into practice our organization’s values of community revitalization and environmental
improvement each day.
Midwest Construction Magazine named our building as the winner of the Renovation/Restoration Best of 2008 Award, out of
128 nominees! The International Interior Design Association recognized our new headquarters with an IDEA Award of First Place
for Corporate/Commercial projects, interior design. We were also fortunate that our partners who helped to design and construct
this building won several Monumental Affair awards in 2008, for community development, construction, design, landscape
architecture, and innovative reuse.
KIB continues to strive for efficiency in programs, and our move to a new building was a huge help in becoming more efficient,
with our office space, tree yard, warehouse and vehicle fleet located under one roof. KIB received Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating
for sound fiscal management for the third year in a row, a rating that only 15% of their rated charities have achieved. Keep
America Beautiful named KIB as the second-best affiliate. Locally, we were selected out of 80 nominees to win a Cultural Vision
Award from NUVO Newsweekly in 2008, and this means a great deal to me and all of us at KIB, as we strive to envision a healthier,
more beautiful environment in Indianapolis.
Our NeighborWoods program continues to plant more and more trees each year, with over 4,600 large trees planted this year alone,
as part of our plan to plant 100,000 large trees in Indianapolis in 10 years. We started and ended the year with a tree planting in
the snow in 2008 (both March and November) – but KIB volunteers plant rain or shine! Senator Lugar, NeighborWoods Honorary
Co-Chair, spoke at a NeighborWoods Breakfast in November, highlighting the importance of trees to our city and our environment.
KIB’s tree planting efforts are assisted by KIB’s Youth Tree Team, where youth work over the summer to maintain trees planted by
KIB. Spotted around the city in KIB t-shirts, these high school youth got valuable job skills, leadership and teamwork training,
and a summer experience not to be forgotten.
Keep America Beautiful recognized KIB’s partners Eli Lilly and Company, for the Lilly Day of Service, and INDOT, for its work on
our Daffodils Program. Our summer project landscaping medians in conjunction with Southeast Neighborhood Development’s
“Fab for Less” program in August won an Inspiring Places Award from the Indianapolis Coalition for Neighborhood
Development. This was an amazing collaboration with our local community development corporation, which made a great impact
on the entire community, through SEND’s housing refurbishment, KIB’s landscaping of medians and volunteer engagement of
local residents, and the excitement built around the revitalization of the neighborhood.

beautiful, clean, safe and healthy. Keep Indianapolis
Beautiful believes that where beauty is planted,
communities thrive. Our community improvement
and beautification projects make our city and
neighborhoods more attractive for residents and
visitors. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s mission is to
unite people to beautify the city, improve the environment,

In June 2008, KIB moved into its new home, just a mile south of downtown Indianapolis in the up and
coming neighborhood of Fountain Square. Our headquarters is a renovated building which was formerly
a brownfield and an abandoned warehouse. RATIO Architects redesigned the facility, and Shiel Sexton
Company built it to achieve LEED Gold certification for its sustainable elements. KIB will apply for our
building to become the first civic nonprofit in Indiana to be LEED Gold certified in 2009. LEED, or
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the US Green Building Council’s rating system for
designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings.
At KIB we believe that “going green” makes sense, and that intentional, imaginative and sustainable development
can help Indianapolis be more competitive, dynamic, healthy, and vibrant, with environmental benefits
that reach far beyond our city’s borders. We intend for our headquarters to serve as a model from which
our community can take pride, learn and grow.
Since moving into its new headquarters in June 2008, KIB has:
Hosted more than 30 meetings of neighborhood and community groups and other nonprofit
organizations.
Educated more than 2,000 visitors on our building’s sustainable features.
Offered Public Tours of the building on the first Monday of each month at 4pm

Lilly Day of Service
On May 15, 2008, Eli Lilly & Company
sent over 8,000 of its Indianapolis headquarters
employees out to give the city a
one-day makeover.
KIB was the lead nonprofit partner for the Lilly
Day of Service, selecting and overseeing projects
for Lilly employees to work on. This event, which
also took place on a global scale for Lilly, was so
successful that it is going to become the Annual
Lilly Day of Service. Lilly volunteers on the First
Day of Service carried out high-impact community
and environmental improvement projects, including
cleanups, tree plantings, murals and public art,
median beautification projects, outdoor classrooms,
and the beautification of significant gateways into
Indianapolis. One of the murals painted, on
Madison Ave. is even in the running for a record
from the Guinness book!

Youth Tree Team Expands
In 2008, KIB saw our successful Youth Tree Team program double in size!
The third year of the program saw 16
youth and 4 youth leaders engaged all
summer, and also part-time into the
spring and fall, watering, pruning,
mulching and staking trees planted by
KIB. Youth also receive job, leadership,
and life skills through enrichment
opportunities that take place weekly.
KIB looks forward to possibly expanding
the size of this popular program even
further in 2009, with greater recruitment
into local schools, and a team dedicated
to maintaining trees planted during the
Lilly Day of Service.

Planting trees and flowers, landscaping, and litter cleanups are all beautification
initiatives that have an immediate positive effect on how a city, neighborhood,
or block is perceived. People and businesses move in and stay, and
tourism flourishes.
1. Plant a tree! Neighborhoods or community organizations can receive 20+ trees to plant along
residential streets or in public spaces as part of the NeighborWoods program. KIB will help you

3. Organize a neighborhood litter cleanup! Litter can harm children, animals, and the
environment. Research also shows strong links between litter and crime. Organizing a neighborhood
cleanup is a great way to help make Indianapolis cleaner, safer, and more beautiful. TO ORgANizE A

4. Adopt-A-Block! Through the Adopt-A-Block program, KIB provides each block coordinator

NeighborWoods
NeighborWoods is an initiative to plant 100,000 large trees
over ten years throughout Indianapolis. NeighborWoods uses
research-based social and environmental indicators to target
and engage neighborhoods with the greatest need for trees.
In addition, all Marion County neighborhoods and
community groups are eligible to apply for free trees for
their neighborhood.
My Tree and Me
The My Tree and Me campaign is an innovative coupon
campaign designed to promote and encourage residential
tree planting in Indianapolis. The campaign features a $20
coupon that can be used towards the purchase of a tree at
participating tree retailers. KIB pairs coupon data with
measurements to track the actual value and environmental
benefits that the newly planted trees provide to the urban
environment.
Youth Tree Team
KIB’s Youth Tree Team consists of high school students hired
to work together to care for the thousands of trees that KIB
plants each year. Students in the Youth Tree Team program
also receive job and skills training, participate in a financial
literacy course, and explore the outdoors by camping in the
woods and rafting on the White River.

IPL Project Greenspace
IPL Project Greenspace helps neighborhoods transform
little-used, undervalued or detrimental places into
community assets — green and beautiful places that build
community, encourage community pride, and add value to
neighborhoods across Indianapolis. Community groups come
up with the ideas; KIB helps to make them a beautiful reality.
This program encompasses gardens, greenspace, pocket parks
and gateways.
Adopt-A-Median
Over 600 medians are available each year for adoption.
Median adopters agree to maintain and beautify the median
for one year, and are recognized by name on median signage.
In addition, KIB works with community groups to enhance
large medians, turning them into beauty-filled gateways.
Daffodils!
Daffodils! is an initiative to plant thousands of daffodil bulbs
in prominent locations such as gateways, major thoroughfares
and greenways. With the help of volunteers, KIB has planted
over 138,000 bulbs in Indianapolis to date. Each spring,
blankets of flowers greet residents and visitors alike, heralding
the beginning of the flowering season.

Adopt-A-Block
Adopt-A-Block provides block leaders with the resources and
tools to engage residents to keep their neighborhood streets,
alleyways, and public spaces free of litter. Block leaders take
part in continued community renewal through tree plantings,
flower giveaways, and greenspace projects.
Great Indy Cleanup
The Great Indy Cleanup program supports community and
neighborhood cleanups from April through October. This
program, in partnership with the City of Indianapolis, the
Department of Public Works, and Southside Landfill, helps
nearly 300 neighborhood groups to organize community
cleanups and remove millions of pounds of trash and litter
from neighborhood streets each year.
Recycle Indianapolis Drop-off Sites
As part of the Recycle Indianapolis program, KIB manages
numerous sites around the city for residents to drop off
paper, glass, steel and aluminum cans, and #1 and #2 plastics.
Paper Recycling
In partnership with AbitibiBowater, you can support KIB by
recycling paper (newspapers, magazines, shopping catalogs
and mail) at Central Indiana Kroger stores and other locations.
Proceeds benefit KIB to support our programs. For bin

Event Trashboxes
With the support of WTHR-Channel 13, KIB offers trash
boxes to the public for use at special events, outdoor festivals,
etc. Trash boxes are $3.50 each and hold up to 45 gallons of

Event Recycling Bin Loan Program
Through a generous donation from Alcoa, KIB has purchased
portable recycling collection bins, which we loan to various
organizations that wish to offer recycling at community events.

Project Green Schools
Project Green Schools educates and empowers teachers,
students, and families to beautify, revitalize, and create
outdoor classrooms on Marion County school grounds.
In partnership with Purdue Extension —Marion County,
Project Green Schools provides an environmental curriculum
and hands-on opportunities for students such as tree plantings,
creating wildlife habitats and gardens, litter abatement,
recycling, and other environmental projects. Each year,
over 7,000 students at more than 30 schools transform their
school grounds through the Project Green Schools program.

A Monumental Affair
Each November, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.,
in partnership with the City of Indianapolis, hosts
A Monumental Affair, the premiere design/construction
competition and awards ceremony in Indianapolis. Architects,
construction professionals, design professionals, landscape
architects, public artists and community groups are given
recognition for their outstanding commitment to the built
and natural environment of the city.
