Volume 7, Issue 1
MARCH 2013
Principal: Balneet Singh
Vice Principal: Rita Walker
It has been a short month, but as always, there has been plenty of activity within the home of
the Ridgewood Royals, and the mighty Green and Yellow.
We began the month with our Science Share / Book Fair evening. The caliber of projects,
creations, pictures, sculptures, structures and devices was absolutely incredible—thank you to
everyone for sharing. A special thank you to the Science Share committee for coordinating
the Science Share. Another big thank you to Mrs. Mercier for organizing our Book Fair. We
collected over $3,000 for Scholastic and was able to keep almost $600.00 worth of books for
the library. I am very pleased that our students have the opportunity to receive high-quality
reading material available for purchase, while at the same time supporting our library
programs.
Once again, we would like to offer a special thank you to Mr. Grozdanovski for organizing
Ridgewood’s skating program which was a wonderful success. Students had the opportunity
to borrow a pair of skates and take to the ice at the Malton Arena. Everyone had a great time,
and who knows, perhaps we’ve just seen the beginnings of our next Olympic figure skater or
NHL star!
In addition, I would like to acknowledge our Black History Month committee for organizing the
special presentation of African Drumming, authentic African dancers, our own Caribbean Café
and Fashion Show, not to mention the interactive drumming presentations our students had
the pleasure to participate in. I was also impressed with all the classes who coordinated their
assembly presentations during February to align with Black History content. This was a
delight to see how our students and teachers demonstrated their ability to synergize! Myself
and Mrs. Walker learned so much from these assemblies. A noteworthy acknowledgement to
Madame Lewis, for her wonderful Sharpen the Saw-physical activity demonstration of African
and Caribbean dance moves during our assemblies; and her tireless efforts to include as
many students as possible for the fashion show.
On behalf of Ridgewood staff, I hope you enjoy the spring weather, and wish you an enjoyable
March Break.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Singh
March Break Maple Syrup Days at the Jack Smythe Field Centre
Open Saturday, March 9 to Saturday, March 16
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Enjoy the beauty and wonder of nature as Spring blossoms. Jack Smythe Field Centre offers
an exceptional family experience with a visit to its Maple Syrup Bush. Join in on an
authentic Canadian tradition.
For a number of years the Peel Field Centres have invited the public for an awe-inspiring
visit to our outstanding Maple Sugar Bush during the March Break. Individuals and families
are invited to get involved as Spring comes to life. Help empty sap buckets, tap trees or sample some
freshly made maple syrup as we celebrate the new syrup season. Take a hike along our tranquil trails and feed
the friendly chickadees by hand.
A teepee and early settler site will also be set up to show how syrup was collected and produced in centuries
past. Use pioneer tools or listen to an Aboriginal tale around the campfires. No visit would be complete without
a trip to the sugar shack where the sap is boiling and clouds of sweet smelling steam billow out of the
chimney. Learn how modern day syrup operations are conducted with an industrial evaporator and tap line system.
Have a taste of the freshly made syrup. It's going to be sweet!
The cost is $5.00/adult and $4.00/child 12 and under.
Lunch will be available for purchase. It will include: hot chocolate, cookies and hotdogs for you to roast over
an open fire. Please note that all payments are “cash” only.
Volunteers
Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and
in the success of the school community. At Ridgewood Public School we welcome and
encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are grateful for the countless
hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year.
To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A criminal record check is
required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field trip, you need this
record check.
Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer.
All returning volunteers will be mailed an Offence Declaration Form that must be filled out and returned to the board
office each year. You will not be able to volunteer with the Peel board if you do not return this form. Forms will be
mailed home in February.
If you have any questions about criminal record checks or the offence declaration form, please call the board office at
