OUTLOOK
3

Outlook
The Springfield College football
team has met with much success
over the past several years, especially
the last two.
Indeed, the Pride, under the leadership
of Head Coach Mike DeLong, has
produced two very successful seasons
by coming up with a 17-4 record in the
back-to-back years of 2009 and 2010.
Not only did DeLong’s teams finish
8-2 and 9-2, they each won an ECAC
Division III Championship Bowl game
– over Plymouth State in ’09, and
Mount Ida in ’10. SC is now 4-0 in ECAC
Championship Bowl games since
1995, and is 3-0 in those games in the
past seven years.
Also within that seven-year period,
Springfield College competed in the
NCAA Tournament, as it was named
the representative of the Empire 8
Conference in 2006 when it finished
10-2 overall.
In the past 16 years, SC has
appeared in five NCAA Tournaments
(1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2006),
making it a total of nine postseason
tournaments in that span.
Springfield College and Coach
DeLong have enjoyed much success
on several fronts in recent times.
Please pay attention to these marks.
Since the 1995 season, the year that
Springfield College first began competing
in Division III, SC’s won-loss
mark is 111-55, good for a .669 winning
percentage. At home, in the
friendly confines of Amos Alonzo
Stagg Field, that percentage rises to
.736 with a 64-23 mark.
DeLong owns a distinguishable
4
2011 SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
record of .591 (171-118-2) in his 29
years as a head coach, all in New
England. In fact, he is the active leader
amongst New England Division III
coaches. All but two of those years
were at Springfield College (the other
two were at Maine Maritime in 1979
and 1980). At Springfield College
alone, DeLong is now 159-112-2, good
for a .586 winning percentage.
This year will serve as a line of
demarcation of sorts. It will be the
final year in which Springfield is a
member of the Empire 8, which
includes Alfred, Frostburg State,
Hartwick, Ithaca, St. John Fisher,
Salisbury, and Utica. Next year, SC will
join the Liberty League, which
includes Hobart, Kings Point, RPI,
Rochester, St. Lawrence, Union, and
WPI. SC has been a member of the
Empire 8 now for seven years. This will
be the eighth.
Springfield will be looking to maintain
its remarkable recent string of
success.
On offense the major story upon
entering camp is the fact that it would
appear that Springfield has two
returning starting quarterbacks. They
are senior Josh Carter and sophomore
Austin Bateman.
Carter is the incumbent. He started
in 2008 as a freshman, 2009 as a
sophomore, and 2010 as a junior.
However, halfway through his junior
year with a 4-2 record, nagging
injuries cropped up.
That’s when then-freshman
Bateman took over. As impressive as
Carter was in his starting role,
Bateman was equally as impressive
right from the git-go. In fact, Bateman
would finish the season, including the
bowl game, with a 5-0 record as the
starter. That included wins over Kings
Point (64-0) and St, John Fisher (55-
49), in which he won the weekly Gold
Helmet Award.
Carter, the 2009 ECAC Bowl game
MVP, passed for 321 yards and three
TD’s in SC’s multiple offense.
Bateman, meanwhile, passed for 252
yards (with a .542 completion percentage).
Bateman would lead SC in rushing
on the season, despite starting just
five games. He finished with 858 net
rushing yards for a 5.9 yards per rush
average. Carter finished with 432 net
yards and a 4.2 yards per carry average.
Brian Staub, who played a little at
QB as a freshman and as a sophomore,
is a junior now, and is the only
other returnee who has quarterback
experience.
Springfield normally attracts a bevy
of running backs and fullbacks. And
this year is no different.
Those who will be missed include
the graduated duo of Antoine King
(547 yards, 4 TD’s) and Joe Myhren
(491 yards, 1 TD). But of the top 12
rushers from last year, nine return,
including senior co-captain Mark Safer
(453 yards, 8 TD’s). Safer averaged a
team-high 12.6 yards per carry, including
a long of 67 yards.
The fleet-footed Safer would appear
to be a safe bet as a starter at halfback.
Others who will shine will

include Mike Davis (362 yards, 6 TD’s)
and Brodie Quinn (97 yards). Quinn
could get the nod at fullback. Davis is
versatile enough to play at either position.
Others in the hunt for backfield
slots include Joel Altavesta, and Andy
Bean.
The tight end would appear to be
Brian White, who has become a significant
blocker within the front six.
On the offensive line, right tackle
and senior co-captain Sean Meagher
(Second Team All-Empire 8) will lead
that unit. Sophomore Scott Leech
could start at guard. There is one
other senior expected to start – center
Matt Dugan.
Other tackles who expect to see significant
action include Duke Ekblom,
Tom Murray, Connor Devlin, and Sean
Degnan. Other guards include Mike
MacDonald, Tim Tuttle, Jake Hart, and
Luke Osberg.
At wide receiver, both the reliable
Tim Brady (11 receptions, 180 yards, 2
TDs), now an SC coach, as well as John
Schmaltz (10 rec., 212 yards, 1 TD),
have graduated. Brady was
Springfield College’s Male Unsung
Hero Award winner a year ago.
Schmaltz was SC’s Male Multi-Sport
Athlete of the Year last season.
Backing them up last year were Brian
Staub, Phil Baier, and James Poggio.
On defense, there’s no secret that
the Pride has lost a few of its “stars”
over the last two years, including DE
Cody Flanigan, LB Ken Goodwin (now
a coach), DE Chris Kulcsar, Tim
Schumacher, and Ryan Gunningsmith.
So, it would appear that SC’s
The 2011 Captains are #76 Sean Meagher, #5 Mark Safer, #33 Matt Ramos, and #19 James Kikel.
defense may be a little on the green
side especially when it comes to the
line. But those returning include linemen
Max Ford, Joe Knaub, Paul
Freeman (8.0 tackles-for-loss), Mike
Hurst, Rob Ruggiero (9.5 tackles-forloss),
and Jonathan Manor. Freeman
and Ruggiero must be relied upon.
The linebackers have more experience.
Expected to help are Will Deffley,
2010 ECAC Bowl MVP Scott Christy
(second-leading tackler last year with
86), Kevin Shields, Cory Kaiser, and TJ
DeMartino.
The secondary will claim the most
experience on that side of the ball.
Senior Matt Ramos, a co-captain, and
a two-time Empire 8 Defensive Player
of the Week winner, is expected to be
the “chief”, the lead roamer within the
secondary. He had three interceptions
last year, and was the sixth-leading
tackler, despite appearing in just eight
games.
A second returning co-captain from
the secondary includes senior free
safety James Kikel, the seventh-leading
tackler with 44 and with eight pass
break-ups.
The cornerbacks would appear to be
veterans Will Turner and Niall Murphy,
with Phil Davis also ready to go.
In terms of the kicking game, SC
appears to be in good shape. The
placekicker is veteran Ricky Peacock,
a two-time Empire 8 Special Teams
Player of the Week award winner, who
made 6-of-8 field goals as a sophomore
a year ago. James Poggio enters
his sophomore year as the returning
punter, averaging 33.0 yards per punt
The Empire 8 Conference
O
n October 9, 2001, Springfield College announced that it had accepted
an invitation to join the Empire 8 Athletic Conference as an affiliate
member in football. The 2004 season was the first for Springfield
College in the conference.
Springfield and Norwich University, both of which competed in the Freedom
Football Conference prior to the ’04 season, joined Alfred University, Hartwick
College, Ithaca College, St. John Fisher College, and Utica College in the
Empire 8. Norwich then left the Empire 8 following the 2008 season. In July,
2009, the Empire 8 announced that Frostburg State University and Salisbury
University, both of Maryland, would be joining Springfield as affiliate members
in the fall of 2011. Later that summer, it was announced that Buffalo State
University would be joining the Empire 8 in the fall of 2012.
Springfield then announced that it would be joining the Liberty League in
football in the fall of 2012. Thus, Springfield College will remain in the Empire
8 for one more season – 2011.
The conference champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III
Football Tournament.
COACHING
STAFF
Meet the Head Coach
M ichael
C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters
his 30th season as a head football
coach in the fall of 2011. He enters his
28th year at Springfield College alone. For
the past 27 years (1984 through 2010, inclusive),
he has been the head coach at
Springfield College, his alma mater. Mike had
also been the head coach at Maine Maritime
in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
In the past 11 years, the SC football program
owns a very impressive 80-36 record
(.690 winning percentage), has appeared in
post season play seven times, and played in
the NCAA Division III tournament four times,
all under DeLong.
Going back to the 1995 season, when
Springfield College joined the Division III
ranks, DeLong’s record here at Springfield
College is 111-55, for an excellent .669 winning
percentage.
With 159 victories at Springfield alone,
DeLong has won more games than any other
coach in the history of the SC program.
Overall, Mike’s record at SC is 159-112-2,
which translates into a .586 winning percentage.
Add in his 12-6 mark in his two-year stint
at Maine Maritime, and Mike’s 29-year record as a head coach is 171-
118-2, good for a .591 winning percentage. With those 171 victories,
Delong is the winningest active head coach in New England Division
III.
DeLong has directed the Pride to five NCAA Tournament appearances,
five Freedom Football Conference (FFC) titles, one Empire 8 cotitle
(in 2006), and four Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Championships. The five FFC titles were the most in the history of the
now-defunct league. Springfield has also established college football’s
premier running attack, leading D-III in rushing six times (1996,
’99, 2000, ’02, ’03, and ’06) and finishing second in 2004.
With success comes well-deserved recognition, and DeLong’s mantle
is becoming pretty crowded. In 2001, the All-American Football
Foundation selected DeLong as a recipient of its Johnny Vaught
Lifetime Achievement Award for Head Coaches. He also won FFC and
American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) District I Coach-of-the-
Year accolades in 2000 and ’03. In 2006 alone, DeLong earned four
Coach of the Year awards. He was named Empire 8 Coach of the Year
(unanimously), NEFWA Division II/III Coach of the Year, AFCA Division
III Coach of the Year (Region I), and d3football.com East Region Coach
of the Year.
Ranking the merits of individual teams in a program with such a rich
history is nearly impossible. It would be hard, however, to top what
DeLong’s ’03 squad accomplished. How does the first 10-0 season in
school annals sound? Or the top seed in the East in the NCAA
Tournament and a first-round bye, also program firsts? National rankings?
This team entered the post-season ranked No. 6 in the AFCA D-
III National Poll, and won its fifth FFC title and fifth national rushing
championship (398.5 yards-per-game). DeLong spent several nights
on the banquet circuit after the ’03 season, winning AFCA Region I,
Gridiron Club of Greater Boston, and FFC Coach of the Year honors.
In 2010, S finished 9-2 and won its fourth ECAC Division III North
Atlantic Championship Bowl game in as many tries. SC defeated
Mount Ida, 26-17, in the playoff game.
10
Head Coach Mike DeLong ’74
In 2009, SC finished 8-2 and won its third
ECAC Division III Northeast Championship
Bowl game. In its final game that season, the
Pride defeated Plymouth State, 42-13, in the
playoff game. The team scored 40 points or
more six times overall.
In 2006, the Pride achieved lofty goals.
The team finished 10-2, won its first Empire 8
co-title (5-1), and reached the NCAA
Tournament for the fifth time. SC defeated
Curry in the first round, before losing to St.
John Fisher in the NCAA Round of 16. On the
way, DeLong coached junior QB Chris
Sharpe, who became winner of numerous
awards, including the Melberger Award, symbolic
of the National Division III Player of the
Year. Sharpe led the nation in rushing yards
per game (161.8) and scoring average per
game (17.7 ppg). As a team, SC led the nation
in rushing offense (374.7 ypg) and turnover
ratio (+1.92 pg). The team finished ranked
#11 by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, #15 by
d3football.com, and #1 in New England
Division III. The team was also ranked as
high as 10th nationally and 2nd in the
Lambert poll. As a team, SC broke several
school records, including most rushing yards (4,496) and most total
yards (4,972) in a season.
In the 2004 season (8-2, ECAC Division III North Atlantic
Championship), the Pride received its highest national ranking in history
when it found itself fourth in the national polls for six straight
weeks.
In ’02, DeLong and the Pride captured their third NCAA Tournament
berth since ‘98. SC posted an 8-2 overall record and captured its fourth
FFC Championship in six seasons. The Pride, which went 6-0 in conference
play for the third time in five seasons, ranked No. 20 in the final
AFCA Division III Poll. SC led D-III in rushing (356.7), and averaged
40.6 points-per-game in the regular season. DeLong’s 100th career win
as SC’s head man came on Oct. 26, a 31-22 triumph at WPI.
DeLong led SC on a magical ride in 2000. The Pride’s 11-2 record, the
most wins in school history, included SC’s third FFC title and a trip to
the East Region Final of the NCAA Championship. It was the first time
a New England school had gone to a regional final. SC also became the
first D-III squad ever to compile 4,000 rushing yards in one season,
leading the nation and setting a Division III record with 4,275 yards.
The Pride, which scored at least 40 points in seven contests, established
a school record by averaging 43.0 points-per-game. DeLong was
named coach of the year by several organizations, including the AFCA
(Region I), the New England Football Writers, and the FFC.
The 2000 campaign marked the second time in three years that SC
reached the post-season. In ’98, SC compiled a 9-2 record, tying the
then-school record for wins in a season. DeLong’s squad also captured
the FFC crown with a 6-0 mark and competed in its first NCAA
Tournament. SC was ranked first in the final NCAA Division III East
Region poll and seventh in the Lambert-Meadowlands Division III poll.
The Pride averaged 39.2 points and led the conference in total offense
(461.8) and rushing (381.4, second nationally).
DeLong led SC to a share of the FFC crown in ’96 after posting a 5-1
record in conference play. The Pride won the first of six national rushing
crowns (351.2) and ranked first in the FFC in total offense (409.2).

In ’95, DeLong guided the Pride to an 8-2 record in
its first D-III season and the ECAC Division III
Northeast Championship with a 49-26 victory over
Cortland State, the first playoff contest in the program’s
history.
DeLong is a 1974 Springfield College graduate
and the 13th head coach in the long and distinguished
history of the program, which dates back
to 1890 and Amos Alonzo Stagg. The 58-year-old
DeLong was a letter-winner in basketball, football,
golf, and track at Holland Patent Central High
School in upstate New York. As an undergraduate
at SC, DeLong received his bachelor’s degree in
physical education and was a defensive lineman
under Coach Ted Dunn for three seasons.
After graduation, DeLong served as head
wrestling coach and assistant football coach at
Holland Patent High School for three years before
attending the University of North Carolina. While
earning his master’s degree in physical education
at Chapel Hill, DeLong was a volunteer graduate
assistant defensive coach on a team that played in
the Liberty Bowl.
In 1978, DeLong was appointed assistant professor
of physical education at Maine Maritime
and served one year as defensive coordinator
before taking over the head coaching duties the
following season. After a 4-5 record in ’79,
DeLong’s squad followed with an 8-1 mark in 1980,
which was the team’s best showing in its 35-year
history. He was named the New England Coach of
the Year by United Press International and The
Mike DeLong is the
winningest active
Division III head coach
in New England with
171 career victories.
The DeLong File
Boston Herald-American after the Mariners won the New England
Conference Championship.
DeLong returned to Springfield College as the defensive
coordinator in 1981. He was promoted to head coach
in 1984. The resurgence of SC football began when he
installed the multiple option offense in 1987. The Pride
recorded a 5-3-1 mark in ’87 and followed with a 6-3-1
record in 1988, marking SC’s first back-to-back winning
seasons since the ‘80 and ‘81 campaigns.
In addition to coaching, DeLong is an associate professor in the
Department of Physical Education and Health Studies. He also served
as a member of the College’s Faculty Senate. DeLong and his wife,
Lynne, reside in Monson. They have two children: Rob and Kelly.
Cerasuolo ’93 enters his
11th season as offensive coordina-
tor in the fall of 2011.
With Cerasuolo devising the game
plans, the Pride has been an offensive
machine in recent years. SC won national
rushing titles in 2002 and 2003. In 2003,
SC led all of college football at 398.5 yards
per game on the ground. In the last 62
games, Cerasuolo’s unit has eclipsed the
40-point mark 22 times, the 50-point
plateau 10 times, and the 60-point mark
on five occasions. Three of his offensive
linemen, Andrew MacFadyen ’02, Brian
Dewey ’05, and Adam Feit ’07, have
earned All-American honors.
A 1993 Springfield graduate and a
native of Northboro, Mass., Cerasuolo
was the offensive coordinator at Division
II Mansfield (Pa.) during the 2000 season. He was also in charge of the
offensive line, quarterbacks, tight ends, short snappers, holders, and kick
returners.
Prior to Mansfield, Cerasuolo held offensive coordinator positions at
Alfred (N.Y.), Lebanon Valley (Pa.), and SUNY-Cortland. He was also the
offensive line and tight ends coach at the University of Maine, and defensive
line coach at Ithaca (N.Y.).
A standout center, Cerasuolo was named SC’s Most Valuable Offensive
Player during his senior year. He was a two-time Division II All-New
England selection (1991, 1992) and a 1992 Associated Press and New
England College Football Writers’ Association All-Star.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in physical education from
Springfield College, Cerasuolo went on to receive his master’s degree in
sport pedagogy from Ithaca in 1995.
Mike and his wife, Tracy, reside in Southwick with their two children.
