Ana Paula, born in Mexico, started piercing
in 1995 when she moved to San Francisco. She was
greatly inspired by Kristian White and his shop, Nomad.
Here she learned about piercing, stretching and
freehand techniques.
After 3 years, she moved back to Mexico, where she
opened her shop, Tonatiuh, which has been open for
12 years now.
Always in her, a great passion towards beauty that is
created through body modification, has kept her in
the learning, sharing and striving to go further. She
went to jewelry school and started Quetzalli Jewelry.
A company that makes earplugs, labrets, nostrils,
septum’s and more.
She has been involved with the APP since 2002,
learning, sharing her jewelry and teaching also. It has
been with love and respect for the community and
culture that is in constant creation, the materials used
and the tradition behind it all, that has made her approach
always such a treat.
Allen Falkner has been piercing professionally
since 1992. He is a founding member of the
Association of Professional Piercers (APP), held
the first secretarial position and has maintained his
membership since its inception. He is best known for
organizing Traumatic Stress Discipline (TSD) and
establishing the suspension.org website. His work
in the body modification community has helped in
the creation of multiple suspension groups worldwide,
the hosting of several suspension conventions
(SusCons) and the compilation and dissemination of
pertinent information pertaining to the art and science
of suspension.
Allen is by no means the progenitor of suspension;
however, he is often referred to as the Father of Modern
Suspension.
Allen’s “second career”
Allen Falkner owned and operated a tattoo/piercing
studio for fifteen years prior to switching careers, becoming
a laser removal technician in 2007. With over
3000 treatments performed, he has adapted this new
profession to focus on the modification of existing
tattoos. He founded his company Fade Fast with the
philosophy that most people that seek removal don’t
hate tattoos, they are simply unhappy with the quality,
choice and/or placement of their artwork.

Andrea Venhaus - 1989 begann Andrea
ihre Tätigkeit als Piercerin, zunächst noch nur selten
und eigentlich nur als Hobby. Als dann 1993 das
Angebot kam, in einem Geschäft einen Raum zum
Piercen nutzen zu können, ergriff sie diese Chance
und eröffnete ihr erstes Miniaturstudio. Aufgrund
der stärker werdenden Nachfrage gab es Ende 1994
den ersten Umzug in größere Räume, Anfang 2002
folgte ein weiterer Umzug in das aktuelle Studio in
der Weißenburgerstraße.
1994 begann Andrea mit den ersten Cuttings, 1995
fertigte sie dann die ersten Brandings mit Blechen
an. Nach einigen Schulungen bietet sie seit 1999 auch
HF-Kauter-Brandings mit einem Erbe HF-Kauter
an. Das Spalten von Zungen und das Einsetzen von
Implantaten oder Genital Beadings kamen 1996
noch zum Programm der Bodymodificationen dazu
und seit 2000 auch Subinzisionen und Meatomien.
Zwischenzeitlich erlernte Andrea die intrakutane
Nahttechnik die besonders unauffällige Narben ermöglicht.
Sie arbeitet zum Teil auch in Zusammenarbeit
mit einer guten Freundin, die Fachärztin für
Neurochirurgie und Notfallmedizin ist. Diese Ärztin
ist auch eine ihrer besten Informationsquellen bei
schwierigen Fachfragen und eine gute Lehrerin.
Nach ihrer Teilnahme an den APP-Conferences
1997, 2002 & 2003 und den BMXNet-Conferences
2007, 2008 hielt sie auf der BMXNet-Conference
2009 das erste Mal selbst einen Vortrag um ihr Wissen
weiterzugeben.
Tobi (aka Bamboo Von CoRe) is
27 years old and takes part in the tattoo- & piercing
scene since he got his very first tattoo nearly 10 years
ago. He started his career with doing piercings and
tried some smaller bodymods. His interest in bodymodification
and tattoo grew and grew. Five years
ago he started tattooing himself.
At that time he directly began to do handpoking and
dotworks. He learned consequently and autodidactic.
The reason besides his own interest in this way of
tattooing was the fact, that almost every dotwork he
saw, looked like blown out and stinkeroo wink
So Tobi told himself, there must be another way of
doing handpoked tattoos/dotworks. His fighting
spirit and the will to ‘do it better’ became alive.
Brian Skellie, Piercer/Founder at Piercing
Experience est. 1992, www.piercing.org Brian has
worked to research and evolve safe body modification
and has shared the results with the APP as a frequent
contributor and instructor ever since the first
conference, as an active business member for over
ten years, and as a former APP Board member and
editor of The Point Journal. He works to promote the
use of current and timely research based standards
for the benefit of clients and colleagues worldwide.
His goal is the ethical advancement of quality for all
aspects of body modification from conscience to science.
Brian is here to contribute continuing education in
his areas of specialty. He introduced and developed
many novel and effective approaches to body modification
such as safe techniques for: aseptic freehand
piercing, infection prevention, sterilization, instrument
management, advanced studio set up, anodization,
efficient use of STATIM autoclaves and HY-
DRIM automated instrument washers. As an active
member of the ASTM committee F04 on medical
and surgical devices and implants, he works on the
applications of biomaterials science to body art.
Bethra Szumski - After she completed her
Gauntlet Body Piercing course work in 1995, Bethra
was mentored by Elayne Angel who has continued
to provide both professional and personal support
throughout her career. Bethra founded Virtue and
Vice Body Piercing in 1995 and then added piercing
to Pain and Wonder Tattoo in 2000. In an effort to
keep up with current piercing related information
she became a member of the APP in 1996. Her roll
shortly switched from student to teacher when in
1998 she was appointed as Secretary of the APP.
Bethra immediately instituted the Association’s first
elections and was duly elected to the position. Bethra
served a full three year term during which (among
other things) she reviewed applications for membership
from piercers worldwide, managed correspondence,
and a majority of the day to day operations
of the organization. Bethra was subsequently elected
to the position of President and served an additional
three year term in that position. After a three year
break she was again elected to the board and has
maintained a position as Secretary ever since.
She is credited with having played a key roll in stabilizing
the organization. During her tenure with the
APP, she has been instrumental in the organization
of ten US conferences and two in Europe. Bethra
has also provided countless courses of education to
piercers, health care providers and law-makers.

Bruno Valsecchi opend the first Ghirigori
Family body adornment studio in Oggiono ( Lc )
Italy and starts working as a Body Piercer freelance
mainly in Arezzo, Bologna, Brescia, Crema, Cremona,
Firenze, Padova, Sondrio, Trento, Trieste in 1994.
1994/97 Cooperates as a professional body piercer at
Cold Steel body piercing studio in London.
1997 Begins attending APP Conferences around the
world ( London, Amsterdam, Las Vegas) and starts
practicing body modifications
1998 Cooperates with Tusk body piercing studio in
London.
2000 Opens the new Ghirigori Family body adornment
studio and in 2001 he begins designing body

2003 Attends and passes the regional health course for body piercing operators and Co-founded the APTPI
( 1° Italian Association of Professional Piercers and Tattooists) where he is one of the organizer of the APTPI
International Educational Congresses. As APTPI board member, work as a consultant for goverment, public
and private health department and tarts promoting the Body Art Cultur by organizing educational events,
seminars, art expositions and art shows. Opens the 2° Ghirigori Family body adornment studio in Dubino (
So ) Italy and starts the Italian Suscons, ( seminars on body suspensions ).
2003/2011 Develops few differente Body Mod procedures like: Ear micro silicon implants, Conches removal,
Advanced scalpel piercing technique, ecc ecc ... 2005 Begins working as a body modifier freelance in Italy,
Croatia, Japan, Norway, Slovenia, USA, Russia, and all around the world.

Dan Dringenberg an American born tattooist
is a master tattoo machine builder. As a tattooist
and machinist Dan combines his knowledge
of how to create a clean tattoo, with how the proper
tools contribute to each jobs success. His customer
base in the United States attests to the appeal of his
craftsmanship and style.
As a child Dan and his brother Rob made a tattoo
ship in the their bedroom closet. As a teen Dan began
to hang around Fat George’s Tattoo Shop in La Puente,
CA. As he began to learn the art of tattooing, He
would eventually teach himself how to tune a tattoo
machine. George, Impressed with his mechanical instinct,
offered these words “..As long as you live, there
will always be a need for good tattoo equipment..”
Inspired by that, Dan began making tubes and machines
out of his fathers garage in 1992. One tube
then one machine. His hard work and perseverance
led him to where he is today.

Elayne Angel - since the 1980s Elayne has
been a driving force to professionalize and promote
body piercing. She became Manager of Gauntlet,
Inc., the first piercing specialty business in the United
States, when it was still the only piercing studio
in the country. She received her honorary “Master
Piercer Certificate” from Gauntlet founder Jim Ward
in 1992. It was the first such certificate ever issued
by Gauntlet.
Within our industry Elayne is known as a pioneer
for developing piercing techniques, formulating after
care guidelines, and innovating a variety of new
piercing placements. She is credited with popularizing
tongue and triangle piercings, naming the lorum,
and inventing the fourchette and Princess Diana
piercings.
Elayne authored The Piercing Bible—The Definitive
Guide to Safe Body Piercing, a comprehensive and
informative reference book directed to piercees and
those who deal with them, (such as medical professionals,
parents, and educators), as well as piercers.
She was founder and President of Rings of Desire, Inc. in the French Quarter of New Orleans, where she
pierced for over twelve years. She helped legislators to promulgate the regulations on body art for the state of
Louisiana. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Elayne closed her business and relocated to the
Yucatán in Mexico. As a Business Member at Large, she travels the U.S. doing piercings at quality studios; she
also writes the monthly “Ask Angel” column for body art industry publication, Pain Magazine.
Currently Elayne is serving her third term on the APP Board of Directors as Medical Liaison. She served two
highly productive previous terms on the Board—three years as Outreach Coordinator, and three years as
Medical Liaison. Elayne authors much of the organization’s literature, and was editor of the quarterly journal,
The Point, for fifteen issues; and is currently co-editor of the publication. For approximately a decade Elayne
has been an instructor for classes at the annual APP Conferences. She has also worked with and educated
numerous medical professionals, legislators, teachers, students, and others about safe body piercing. In 2006
Elayne was honored to be the recipient of The President’s Award for a lifetime of contributions to the piercing
industry.
Emiliano Marchetti was born in Rome
(IT) in 1972.
Owner of “La Caverna delle torture” shop since 1995,
comics and illustrations enthusiast, he started tattooing
in 1993 imposing his grotesque figures and bright
colors.
He teaches several training courses for tattooists and
he is a charter member of APTPI.
He cooperates with private and public corporations
and companies not related to tattooing as a communication
consultant.
Gábor Zagyvai made his first scarification when
he was 18. Shortly after he started learning about body
piercings, and body modification procedures, and this
subject quickly become his passion, and his job. Soon he
became the only piercer in Hungary who offers scarifications
and wide range of body modification procedures.
Now he works in Black & White Tattoo for 6 years.
In the year 2005 he formed a perfromance group called
KóMA, and in that year they made some photo exhibitions
and body ritual related performances with play
piercings, pulling, and lip sewing. These performances,
and the exhibition about the shocking pictures of body
rituals were something new for the Hungarian audience.
As the only body modification artist in Hungary, one of
his most important mission is to show the people the
philosophy, theory and spiritual reasons behind body
modifications. His works were featured in several hungarian
mediums like TV channels, magazines, radios,
and newspapers. For two years he runs a personal blogsite
about his works, his ideas on the philosophy of body
modification, and about the world of body modification.
He writes articles and interviews regularly for hungarian
tattoo sites.
In 2010 a new passion found him: he learnt how to tattoo, and now he makes minimal and abstract tattoos too.
His favourite kind of art is scarification and minimal tattooing, and he also paints his personal style Abstract
Mistycism for almost every canvas.
James Weber started piercing professionally
in 1993, and has been actively involved at an industry-wide
level in legislative, educational, and public
relations projects since that time. He is the founder
and President of Infinite Body Piercing, Inc., located
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States.
Started humbly in 1994, Infinite has gone on to become
one of the busiest piercing-only shops in the
U.S., staying at the forefront of body art education
through its publications and website, infinitebody.
com
James has served two consecutive terms on the Board
of Directors of the Association of Professional Piercers.
In 2005 he was elected as the APP’s Medical Liaison,
and then went on to serve as the APP’s President
from 2008 to 2011. While on the Board he oversaw
projects as diverse as the update to the APP’s graphic
identity and copyright licensing, to a thorough review
of the legal aspects of the organization from
election protocol to parliamentary procedure.
From 2005 to 2012, James served as editor (and for
several years co-editor, with Elayne Angel) of The
Point: The Quarterly Journal of the Association of
Professional Piercers. Over seven years and twenty-
seven issues, he was responsible for The Point evolving from the black-and-white newsletter of the organization
to the full-color trade journal it is today. He has written extensively for the APP, and in addition to The Point his
articles have been reprinted in many publications, including Pain Magazine and BMEzine.com.

Jim Ward - Author of Running the Gauntlet—
An Intimate History of the Modern Body Piercing
Movement, Jim Ward established the first professional
body piercing studio in 1975. He dedicated
decades to pioneering the development of the techniques,
tools, and jewelry designs that have become
industry standard. Simultaneously, he sought to
honor the rites-of-passage and shamanic aspects of
his profession while always respecting the personal
quests of those who came to be pierced at his Gauntlet
studios.
Paul King has been a Professional Body Piercer
since 1991 and an enthusiast before that! He successfully
completed a 1 year apprenticeship under Elayne
Angel. He worked in the three former Gauntlet locations
of Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco
and was store manager of LA and NYC. In 1996 Jim
Ward, Founder of Gauntlet, awarded Paul King with
the honorary title of Master Piercer. He apprenticed
many Piercers for Gauntlet as well as co-taught many
Gauntlet Training seminars. Paul King has lectured
at Universities and the APP regarding the history of
Body Piercing. He is an avid traveler, collector and
layman anthropologist.
In 1999 Paul King and Grant Dempsey partnered to
create Cold Steel America, two tattooing and piercing
shops in San Francisco. He is an active member
of the
Association of Professional Piercers. In 2005, he successfully
completed a three year term as an elected
Board Member for the APP. Currently he remains the
board appointed Treasurer for the APP.
Jimmy Buddha has been in the piercing and
body modification industry since 1996 having been a
body piercer, shop owner, and maker of jewelry. He has
now focused his creative energy and business skills on
moving the industry forward through his jewelry companies
Diablo Organics and Jimmy Buddha Designs. As the
piercing industry evolves, jewelry design and marketing
are emerging as prominent factors at the forefront of this
evolution. By understanding the roots of modern piercing
Jimmy’s goal is to stay abreast of the topics concerning
the modern piercing stdio and how jewelry fits into
the big picture.

Samppa Von Cyborg is one of the world’s
most famous practitioners of body modification and
piercing. Samppa works extensively within the field
of Body Modification and offers procedures of any
size, ranging from basic piercings to very extreme
modifications. Samppa welcomes all clients regardless
of the size of the work, their requirements, or
their experience/knowledge of the body modification
scene. Whether you’re looking for your first
basic piercing or an extreme experimental modification,

Ryan Ouellette, owner of Precision Body
Arts in New Hampshire, is an accomplished body
piercer and international scarification artist with over
twelve years experience. Ryan is a program contributor
and instructor for the Association of Professional
Piercers (APP) conference, and a former BME staff
member and writer. He specializes in area removal
scarification techniques and complex designs. This is
Ryan’s second time instructing with BMXNET.
Tommy Lee Wendtner, Tattoo Artist
from Cologne, Germany.

Steve Haworth Steve Haworth is a body
modification artist and “human evolution artist”. He
is responsible for the invention and popularization of
subdermal 3D-art implants, as well as transdermal
implants and electrocautery or “laser” branding. In
addition, he invented a very successful variant of the
surface bar, and has done pioneering work with magnetic
implants, ear pointing, dermal punching, genital
beading, tongue splitting and body suspension.
Called “the ultimate pioneer and a truly dedicated
artist” by Bizarre Magazine, Steve Haworth is often
cited as an inspiration by other body modification
artists. Samppa von Cyborg calls him the “the most
important, most respected body modder out there.”
Shawn Porter of the ScarWars project explains, “I
directly credit Steve’s ESU branding as a main influence
on the newer generation of scarification artists;
his high detail branding (which caused a stir when it
was featured in In the Flesh, Body Art and Bizarre)
showed people that you could do more than just
dots, chevrons and geometric shapes.” According to
respected scarification artist Ron Garza, “Steve has
always been a pioneer and innovator. He has made
a huge contribution to the modification community
as a whole and the community wouldn’t be the same
place it is today without him.” The Guinness Book
of World Records lists Steve as the “Most Advanced
Body Modification Artist”, 1999 to present.
He has worked on individuals noted for their extensive
modifications such as The Enigma, Katzen,
Stalking Cat and The Lizardman.
Steve was born into a family of surgical equipment
manufacturers. In the late 1980s he started his own
business in that field, and in the early 1990s began
working as a piercer. He opened a successful chain
of piercing studios called HTC (Haworth Tech Company).
Not content to stick to mainstream piercing,
he has continued to innovate throughout his years
in the industry. In the mid-Nineties he performed
the first transdermal implant, the “Metal Mohawk”,
on Joe Aylward. At around the same time he began
his pioneering work with subdermal implants. He
has designed a number of unique and artistic subdermal
implants and continues to come out with new
designs every year.
In 2005 he sold the HTC chain and retired from active
piercing, preferring to concentrate on other body
modifications, as well as involvement in many other
businesses and interests. He and business partner Jesse
Jarrell create unique silicone body jewelry through
their company Kaos Softwear, and Steve creates and
produces body modification-themed stainless steel
jewelry through his SHS (Steve Haworth Stainless)
line. Steve also designs specialized tools for implant
procedures, and teaches seminars on his modification
techniques in topics such as genital beading,
surface bars and laser branding. He founded the
body suspension group Life Suspended, and is part
of the production team Horns and Halos, which puts
on several fetish-themed events a year. Steve is the
subject of the 2007 documentary Flesh & Blood by
director Larry Silverman, and also appears in the
2005 documentary Modify, and the television show
Extreme Dr. 90210.
