4-1 OR the second time in the history
of the College a victorious athletics
team carried the Cato Shield back
to Newman on the evening of the
Intercollegiate athletics meeting. Newman
had won the athletics for 1937 in
memorable fashion, for one point gave
them supremacy over the formidable
Ormond team, who thus sustained their
second defeat in the contest since the
Cato Shield was first presented. Right up
to the day of the meeting the odds were
against our team, but the "co-operation" of
an extra strong Trinity team, and the fact
that every member of the Newman team
did his bit, placed Newman colours first for
the day. Ormond were, however, unfortunate
in that H. Lawson, one of their
foremost athletes, was suffering from ankle
trouble on the day of the sports, and was
unable to give of his best. He nevertheless
persevered gamely, and deserves every
congratulation on his fine effort.
Before commencing our description of
the athletics contests it is fitting that we
should once more offer our sincere thanks
to our coach, Mr. R. J. Triado, whose
untiring zeal was mainly responsible for
our victory this year. Mr. M. V.
McInerney was also invaluable in this
regard, and we were sorry to find that the
Seconds relay team was without his sterling
services this year.
The Freshers' sports found a number of
Newman men participating. Owing no
doubt, to lack of training through the
proximity of the cricket final we had no
outstanding successes, but Coleman made a
fair showing in the 100 yards, while Westmore
gave promise of his capabilities as
a miler. Newman athletes were much more
conspicuous in the Univ. ersity championships.
Hartung ran well in the 100 yards;
Brosnan won the half-mile easily, and was
second in a record-breaking quarter, while
Lansell distinguished himself by coming
second to MacDonald of Ormond in the
weight putt. Perhaps the most significant
Athletics
event of the day was the placing of Newman
athletes first, second, and third in the
long jump. McNeill, Batros, and Godby
filled these respective positions, the winning
jump being 22 ft. 1 in. McNeill went on
to complete a double by winning the hop,
step and jump very comfortably.
Although the Intervarsity sports were
held after the Intercollegiate meeting it is
convenient to mention them here, as Newman
was very well represented in the team.
Brosnan, Hartung, Lansell, McNeill, and
Batros competed on behalf of Melbourne
University and performed very well. Brosnan
just failed to retain his 880 yards title ;
Hartung ran well in the quarter mile;
Lansell was placed in the weight putt, and
Batros and McNeill filled second and third
places respectively in the long jump.
It is pleasing to record that Newman
athletes trained enthusiastically and well
for the Intercollegiate meeting this year,
and as luck favoured us in the matter of
injuries, we were able to field a very fit
team which represented our full athletic
strength.
The first event on the Intercollegiate
programme, the Weight Putt, went, of
course, to McDonald, of Ormond, who won
with a putt of 38 ft. 5 in. We were
jubilant, however, to find that Lansell filled
second place, and we were well satisfied
with our position. The 100 Yards was
run into a terrific wind, and Hartung,
despite the adverse conditions, showed a
wonderful return to form in beating the
University champion, Thwaites, of Trinity,
in the understandable time of 10 9/10th
secs.
Brosnan, running easily, carried off the
880 Yards without trouble from Nicholson,
of Ormond; Wilkinson, of Trinity, and
Holmes, of Ormond, tying for 3rd place.
Jamieson gained another first for Ormond
in the Hurdles, while our representatives,
Godby and Meagher, took 4th and 5th
places. This race was one of the most
spectacular of the day. Right up to the
