Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all our swimmers for showing sportsmanship and enthusiasm at the swimming
carnival. Well done to the teams who cheered them on and thank you to Juliet Spence and Nancy
Lindley (team leaders) and all our staff and parents/carers who helped out in many and varied
ways – great job everyone. See later in the Newsletter for results.
Welcome Morning Tea
It was terrific that so many parents and carers came to the welcome morning tea last Friday. I
hope you got to know some new people and you learnt some more about the school from our Year
1 parents/carers. Thank you for all the very positive comments about our fabulous staff and
school. Thank you to our wonderful P&C President Penny Hackett and Vice President Vicki
Thirwell and all our hard working Year 1 parents and carers for providing the delicious morning
tea.
New Sports Uniform
We have had a delivery of the new red and yellow sport shirts and shorts. They look terrific and
will be available for sale from tomorrow Friday 1 March. A stall will be set up near the uniform
shop. Shorts will be $20, shirts $27—cash preferred. Orders can be placed for the blue and
green sports shirts. We will let everyone know as soon as they arrive.
Staff Development Days
The staff will be making changes to their staff development days at the end of the year. The last
two days for staff are 19 and 20 December – both these days are staff development days – no
students at school. Instead of working the above two days staff will be working on Saturday 1 June
and another Saturday 1 November 2013.
Interrelate
Year 6 students have commenced their Interrelate program. Students will be attending four
sessions of this program which is designed to help enhance self-esteem, consolidate previous
sexuality education and help develop communication and decision making skills. It explores a
range of issues in greater depth, offering a comprehensive sexuality program designed specifically
for this important time in senior primary school student’s lives.
A wide variety of creative activities and teaching methods are used during this program. These
include – discussions, student’s questions – written and oral, role plays, games and other
activities. Feedback from the program implementation has been very positive.
HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE SCHOOLKIDS BONUS?
Do you know about the Schoolkids Bonus? It is a new cash payment to help eligible families and
students with the costs of primary and secondary school studies. Around 1.2 million families have
already benefitted from the first wave of payments in January 2013 – have you?
If you receive a family or income support payment, including Family Tax Benefit Part A, you could
be eligible to receive $410 a year for each primary student and $820 a year for each secondary

student, with half paid in January and half paid in July.
The Schoolkids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund (ETR) and is a much simpler system.
You no longer need to collect receipts and payments are made automatically so you don’t have to
wait months to make a claim via your tax return. Unlike the ETR you can choose how you use the
payment to best support your children’s education – whether it be school books, stationery,
uniforms, school fees, or excursions.
Check your eligibility by visiting australia.gov.au/schoolkidsbonus and if you think you might have
missed out on the January payment, contact Centrelink – either in person at a Centrelink-Medicare
Office or by calling 132 468.
Movies and books
Is your child a reluctant reader? Why not try helping them find the book that goes with a movie or
DVD they’ve enjoyed, or are about to see. Encouraging your child to read can help them to build

Rainforest creatures
Experience Taronga Zoo's stunning Wild Asia rainforest trail guided by volunteer researcher Heidi

Fitter, healthier, happier
Go4Fun is a free lifestyle program being run across NSW towns. For 7-13 year-old children who
are above a healthy weight, activities aim for a long-lasting and healthy approach to living and are

Coles Sports in Schools’ 2012 Vouchers
Thirteen boxes of sports equipment arrived at WPS last week thanks to the ‘Coles
Sports in Schools’ vouchers from 2012. We received a variety of equipment
including tennis balls, soccer balls, basketballs, cricket bats, cricket stumps, AFL
goal posts, ball launchers, high bouncy balls, joey (K-2) cricket sets and pink soft
balls… just to name some of it.
A huge thank you to all the families who collected and handed in vouchers last
year and the parent volunteers (the fabulous Shirley and Melissa) who helped
coordinate the collection of vouchers. It really makes a big difference to our sports
equipment and sport programs.

K- 6 Dismissal / Traffic Issues
DEPUTY’S MESSAGE
From Monday 4 March, Kindergarten students will be finishing at 3pm with the rest of the school.
This will have an impact on traffic and safety leaving our school at dismissal time. Thank you to all
the parents/carers who are taking extra time to park safely and are collecting their children with
safety in mind.

The school photographer will return to Willoughby on the following days this term:

photos for Kindergarten and Year 6

Please read the information on the envelopes carefully. Parents/carers will be able to pre-order
class and individual photos using these envelopes. A separate envelope will be available at the
front office for anyone wanting to pre-order a sibling/family photo. Please keep the envelopes at
home until photo day. Change will not be available.
Life Education
A reminder that the Life Ed information session for parents/carer is on Friday 1 March from 2-3pm
in the van. Libby Rowe, the Life Educator, is happy to explain some of the programs offered. We
hope to see lots of parents on the 1st.
UNSW / ICAS Testing
Students in Years 3 to 6 are invited to participate in the 2013 English, Mathematics, Science,
Writing and Computer Competitions. Students will receive a note this week outlining the dates and
cost for participation.
The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools provide an opportunity for students to
gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. Each student will
receive a certificate and a detailed results letter indicating overall performance compared with other
students in the state.
PLEASE NOTE: The testing will take place BEFORE school on each of the dates below.
Students will meet at 7.45am in the 3-6 assembly area. Supervising teachers will take the
students to their assigned rooms to complete the test.
If you would like your child to participate in any (or all) of the competitions, please fill in the note
and return it with the entry fee to your child’s class teacher by Monday 8 April, 2013. Money must
accompany the application. Please do not feel that you have to enter your child. Student
participation is optional.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
All students in Kindergarten and Year 1 will be automatically included as the teachers and teacher
librarians share read the 30 books needed to receive the Premier’s Certificate at the end of the
year.
Years 2 – 6 will be completing the PRC individually and we encourage them to participate. All
students’ names are registered so it is just a matter of “Googling” NSW PRC and following the
instructions below. Those who participate for four years receive a gold certificate.
Primary school students are asked to read 20 books over the year (these may be picture books) so
the process is quite easy. To help with selection, there are lists of books written for their year level
on the website. Willoughby school has excellent literacy results and we believe that the Reading
Challenge is contributing to this success.
Registering for the Premier’s Reading Challenge
● Registration opens of March 1 via the PRC website

● Schools are automatically registered when a student starts an online reading record
● Students use their DET username and password. On their first logon for 2013, students
record their previous school, if applicable.
● Student’s details (name and grade) on the PRC website come from the schools’ records
● Students are encouraged to complete their own online records at school, at home and at the
local library. Parents can assist students to enter books read.
● The easiest most reliable way to enter books is by their ID number.
● Check the website homepage regularly for important messages and updates
● The challenge closes on 1 September. Students will need to have their records completed by
23 August 2013.
● We will validate all completed entries and the Certificate will be given out in the last weeks of
2013.

Willoughby Public School Annual Swimming Carnival 2013
Welcome back everyone for another fantastic sports filled year at Willoughby Public School. Last year our
fantastic students and parents demonstrated their dedication and enthusiasm for sport at all levels and
this year has started off in a similar manner.
Firstly, I would like to thank all the parents/carers for their help on the day. Your assistance is always
greatly appreciated by both teachers and students.
Next, special congratulations to our House Leaders who, in their first leadership duties, demonstrated
both excellent sportsmanship and organisational skills. It was pleasing to see all the house areas neat
and tidy before the end of the carnival, with very little lost property to account for!
Finally to all the wonderful Willoughby staff who worked tirelessly on the day. Your efforts are always
welcomed and greatly appreciated.
Included in this newsletter are the final results for the carnival. Congratulations to all the winners for
achieving such fine results. All the ribbons associated with this year’s carnival will be handed out at Friday
Lines in Week 7 (15 March) while the age champion trophies will be handed out at our Week 3-6
Assembly on Thursday March 21.
Once details of qualifying times are finalized the Zone Swimming Team will be announced. The Zone
Swimming Carnival is on March 5 at Lane Cove Pool. Our next major school carnival will be the Cross
Country Carnival on Friday 5 April. Regards

● Comprehensive history of the school compiled by a local historian
● Historical Exhibition (on display during Celebration Month – September 2013)
● Commemorative Pavers (more information to come)
● Celebration Tea Towels (more information to come)
● Time Capsule buried on Open Day
● Art Installation
● 150 th Memorabilia (available at the Fair)
