In 1981, the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer fell in love with the at the time abandoned Brancaia
estate in Tuscany (Castellina in Chianti) and purchased it. Only two years later, Brancaia made the first rank in
an important Chianti Classico tasting and then rapidly gained international recognition.
This lead to a continuous extension of the activities resulting in purchasing the Poppi estate (Radda in Chianti) in
1989, followed in 1998 by the founding of Brancaia in Maremma, only 10km from the Mediterranean coastline.
Since 1998, Barbara Widmer, oenologist and daughter of the founders, has been responsible for the winemaking as well as for the ineyards
on all three estates. She thereby relies on the consultancy of the famous oenologist Carlo Ferrini.
Château Beychevelle, due to the classic stunning architecture of the Château and its beautiful gardens, is
often referred to by its fans as Bordeaux version of Versailles. However, the history of Beychevelle dates
back much further than that. In its formative years, it was the property of the Foix Candale family. The Foix
Candale were well established in Bordeaux by 1446, as they already possessed Château d’Issan in
Margaux.
In 1565, Bishop François de Foix Candale ordered the Château to be constructed. Eventually, Beychevelle became the property of
the Dukes of Epernon.
Grand Bateau Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc 2010 262
The ships depicted on the label of Château Beychevelle supposedly recall a custom of the late sixteenth
and early seventeenth centuries whereby boats passing up the estuary would salute the Duc d’Epernon,
owner of Beychevelle at the time, by lowering their sails. An alternative version is that the sails were
lowered to allow the boat to slip by unnoticed and so avoid paying the toll levied by the duke.
Secret de Grand Bateau Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc 2010 370
Vanilla oak and lemon on the nose with the mildest note of orange blossom. Luscious and crisp on the
palate, notes of toasted oak, lemon and spice.
Château Beychevelle, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet France/Petit Verdot 2005 1,860
Grant Burge is a fifth-generation Barossa vigneron and winemaker. Throughout his career, Grant has been one of the
most respected and innovative forces in the Australian wine industry. The history of the Burge family and their long
association with winemaking in the region can be traced back to March 1855, when noted tailor John Burge
immigrated to the Barossa from Hillcot, near Pewsey in Wiltshire, England with his wife Eliza and their two sons. John
worked as a winemaker at Hillside Vineyards and his love of viticulture was passed onto his son Meshach, who continued the tradition making his
first wine in 1865, whilst becoming a prominent community leader. Meshach married Emma in 1883 and they had eight children. First-born Percival
established the Wilsford Winery near Lyndoch in 1928. Percival had two sons, Noel and Colin, and Colin and his wife Nancy had one son, Grant.
Following in the footsteps of his father and forefathers before him, Grant now carries the winemaking tradition into the 21st century.
Passionate about their beloved Toscana, Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino, in 1877, channelled their energies into creating
great wines. It is now over 130 years ago that the town of Pontassieve was chosen to be the site of a winery.
Conveniently close to the beautiful city of Florence, the winery is, till today, the main facility for Ruffino. The driving
passion and uncompromising quest for quality very rapidly made Ruffino wines the benchmark for Tuscan wines and
an Ambassador worldwide for Tuscan elegance and style.
Among its many clients, Ruffino can proudly include the acclaimed composer Giuseppe Verdi and the Royal Courts of Italy and Sweden. Early in
its evolution, Ruffino’s Chianti was recognised and bestowed, in 1895, a Gold Medal in the prestigious Bordeaux wine exhibition.
In fact, when Chianti D.O.C.G appellation was presented in1984, it was not a coincidence that the first government warranty strip numbered AAA
00000001 was applied to a bottle of Ruffino Chianti.
