<strong>Time</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Money</strong> <strong>Well</strong> Spent to Promote Library Services<br />

On February 1, the Old Colony Library Network (OCLN) Legislative<br />
Breakfast was held at the Hingham Public Library. Librarians,<br />
directors, trustees, <strong>and</strong> guest speakers met with members of the Sate<br />
Legislature including Rep. Geoff Diehl R-Whitman <strong>and</strong> Sen. John<br />
Keenan, D-Quincy. From the <strong>Abington</strong> Public Library, seven members<br />
of the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) attended <strong>and</strong> spoke about the TAB .<br />
The members in attendance were Joe Heath, Grace Hanley, Lauren<br />
Howard, Emily O’Neill, Madison Tyler, Tim Nuttall <strong>and</strong> me, Abby<br />
Gendreau.<br />
The TAB was asked to speak at this legislative breakfast to address<br />
the controversy that arose after a Star Wars program was held at the<br />
<strong>Abington</strong> Public Library that the TAB hosted. U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-<br />
OK, heard about the event <strong>and</strong> listed it in “Wastebook 2012,” because<br />
it used $365 of grant money. He thought it was a waste of tax dollars.<br />
But, the grant money was not wasted. It was used to fund <strong>Abington</strong>’s<br />
Teen Advisory Board library events, <strong>and</strong> to get teens <strong>and</strong> children<br />
excited about coming to the library. During the Star Wars event<br />
AHS Freshman/Teen Advisory Board Member Abby Gendreau several young children got their first library cards, making the day a<br />
with State Rep. Geoff Diehl, R-Whitman at the Old Colony huge success.<br />
Library Network’s Legislative Breakfast -<br />
We decided that speaking at the breakfast would be the best way to<br />
tell our government that we do not waste money. We let them know<br />
that the money they gave us in the LSTA Tweens <strong>and</strong> Teens Grant<br />

greatly benefited the library <strong>and</strong> community.<br />
