Northern Ireland wetlands are suffering every<br />

year from our increasing demand for tap <strong>water</strong>.<br />

Excessive <strong>water</strong>ing of our gardens in the dry summer months<br />

puts pressure on our <strong>water</strong> sources.<br />

Collecting rain<strong>water</strong> not only benefits wetlands but also the health of your<br />

garden. Rain is a naturally soft <strong>water</strong>, which means it does not have any<br />

minerals, chlorine, fluoride, or other chemicals in it that may be present in your<br />

tap <strong>water</strong>. It is usually collected from the roofs of houses and picks up very<br />

little contamination when it falls. You can collect a large amount of rain<strong>water</strong><br />

from your gutters with one or more <strong>water</strong> <strong>butt</strong>s. This rain<strong>water</strong> can be used for<br />

<strong>water</strong>ing your plants or topping up your pond.<br />
