Cairns Rock Their First Agility Trial
This agility trial was the largest and most complex event CTCD has ever
hosted, requiring more than nine months of planning as well as 43 hours of
work from multiple club members over the three-day weekend. We hosted
844 dogs, including 18 Cairns, which may be a national record for Cairns
competing in agility.
We didn’t just raise a big wad of much-needed cash for the club, however;
we threw one of the best-run agility trials ever held in Colorado. I’ll let the
Colorado agility community support that brag, by copying verbatim a few of
the comments posted on the Colorado Agility Working List:
First and foremost, congratulations to the Cairn Terrier Club on an absolutely FANTASTIC first trial. Everything was
perfect....the site, the secretary, the judges (when will they be back in Colorado?!?!), the courses, the absolutely wonderful
running orders, the efficiency of everything and everyone. You all did awesome and should very proud!! Nobody would have
known it was your first trial!
There was absolutely NOTHING to complain about this weekend. As you know, it's a rare trial when EVERYTHING goes well.
Congratulations! I'm sure from the inside looking out that as a club there are things you saw that weren't perfect, but I can
assure you from the outside looking in, you have a ton of work to do if you want to top your debut! Though, admittedly, I don't
believe that can be topped!
Thank-you and hats off to the Cairn Terrier Club!!! A fun club, A GREAT trial, fantastic judges with wonderful courses and
REALLY NICE title ribbons.
I love the judges and the Cairn Terrier Club did an excellent job putting it together on their first trial and its like they have
done it so many time ~ so professional!! GREAT JOB!!! Hope they do it again!!
Cairns Rock Their First Agility Trial
I would like to thank the Cairn Terrier Club. That was a very well run trial, I had a great time! My Senior Mom was able to
attend and my family from out of town and they all remarked on how comfortable they felt watching and being part of a major
event that was run so well. I am looking forward to attending the next one that this club holds.
A Big thanks to the Cairn Club of Denver. You did an awesome job hosting a great 3 day trial. Everything was so well run. The
club rocked. The judges had great courses. And the weather was good. Who could ask for more? Congrats on a well run
event.
A job well done putting this first trial together. Runs and activities all 3
days were flawless by you and your team. The club picked two of the best
judges to test our skills!
Thanks to the Carin Terrier Club for a really nice trial. All the special touches were so nice. Token and I were the proud
winners of the lovely OOOOPS basket. The funniest part was the bottle of wine called "Run Toto Run" from KS yet.... Although
we NQ'd 6 out of 6 runs...(is that a record?)...we had fun together. We always have our own personal little wins.
I want to thank the Cairn Terrier Club, too. I loved the judges and courses. But I especially want to thank them for being the
first club in Colorado to include the mixed breeds! That is something I've really been eagerly anticipating!
I would like to add my THANK YOU to the CTCD for the very fun trial this weekend with the beautiful title ribbons. And WELL
DONE! especially for your first trial. You hired awesome judges, kept a sense of fun about the the whole weekend, had great
little extras like worker's & NQ raffles and kept the trial running wonderfully smoothly--Novice was starting at about 1:00ish
each day! Great job and can't wait until your next trial!!
Just wanted to echo everyone's sentiments, this was a great match! Fun and challenging courses. Also wanted to say thanks,
this was our first AKC match as I am running a mixed breed, and everyone was so nice and supportive. Many thanks to
everyone involved!
President’s Letter
Dear CTCD Members,
ISSUE 106
WOW –WE DID IT! Last month our club held its first AKC sanctioned
agility trial. All the exhibitors, spectators and even the judges
complimented us on what a wonderful 3-day trial it was; and our plaid
ribbons were quite a hit! In less than six months after receiving AKC
sanctioning, a core group of 15 members worked continuously, along with
the help of a great agility community, to assure our success. This means
that, compliments of the financial earnings from that trial, our club can
continue to put on the kind of specialties which have earned us a great
reputation among Cairn conformation exhibitors. Many thanks to those
club members dedicated to our breed and the viability of CTCD who helped
us accomplish this goal.
Speaking of our specialty, it is just around the corner. Months of
planning have gone into celebrating the “20 th Annual CTCD Specialty”, and
we need all our members help and support on August 20 th to assure the
specialty’s success. The premium will be out soon so please plan on
attending. Even if you are not an exhibitor, you can come up to Greeley
and help us. There will be a seminar in the afternoon as well as our Friday
night banquet so you’ll have plenty of time to visit old friends while seeing
all those wonderful Cairns in the show. Good luck to all the exhibitors!
Our club has been existing on the hard work of a few dedicated
members serving on the board, helping out at our earthdog tests and agility
trials, fostering for rescue, putting on the specialty and just putting out
great effort for our Cairn Terrier breed. These people need some new faces
and ideas to keep CTCD growing in the right direction. Our elections are
coming up soon, so consider taking an office or board position for the next
year. There is no experience required and you can get on-the-job training
for any job. We also need help for putting on our trials and the specialty –
so please consider helping your club out. Any questions or ideas can be
shared with any of the officers or board members. Let’s make the next
year one of the best for CTCD.
Preserving the Cairn Terrier
by
Kathleen Spelman (Ragtime Cairns)
Every breed club has a Constitution that members agree to follow, as well as
the Club’s By-Laws and Code of Ethics. The following are taken from a
few Club websites:
The CTCA states:
“to urge members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed as
defined by the Cairn Terrier Club of America and approved by the American
Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence by which Cairn Terriers
shall be judged; to do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of
the breed and to encourage sportsmanlike competition at dog shows, field
trials, and obedience trials; to conduct sanctioned matches and specialty
shows, field trials, and obedience trials under the rules of the American
Kennel Club.”
The CTCNC states:
“To urge club members and breeders to accept the Breed Standard as
defined by the Cairn Terrier Club of America and approved by the American
Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence by which the Cairn Terrier
shall be judged.”
The CTCSC states:
“We are Southern California's only AKC-licensed Cairn Terrier club,
dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the breed.”
The CTCD, CRCTC, states:
“To urge members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed as
approved by The American Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence
by which the Cairn Terrier shall be judged.”
ISSUE 106

Breeder’s Corner Cont’d
Doctors have the Hippocratic oath which states a doctor “Will Do No
Harm”, most law enforcement agencies say something like “To Protect and
Serve”, so as members of a Pure Bred Dog Club we are asked to “Accept
the Cairn Terrier Standard as defined by the CTCA and approved by
the AKC”.
We are all familiar with “THE WIZARD OF OZ”and the adventure
Dorothy and “Toto”have there. They meet a Lion who lacks Courage, a
Scarecrow lacking a brain and of course a Tin Man desiring a heart. As
breeders we too need COURAGE to do right by our Cairns by breeding to
the standard. We need to be smart with our BRAIN and learn all we can to
preserve the Cairn breed, and with all our HEART show the love we have
for the breed by preserving the breed, and we do this by improving our own
breeding practices.
As for changing the Standard, if it would help the breed I'd say yes.
However, there is really no reason to do so. The Standard was very
carefully written and worded to guide future breeders to keep type and
assure that the Cairn will always be able to perform at its best when
working, whether around a farm keeping vermin under control, or these days
doing earth dog trials and agility.
In the CTCA Spring Newsletter we were notified that Lynne Nabors is
Chairperson for updating and revising the CTCA Interpretation, Clarification
and Amplification of the Cairn Terrier Standard, in which Lynne asked the
membership at large to give the committee input. Therefore, I sent her the
following.
Remember, this booklet does not replace the Standard. Breeders and
judges alike should always read the Standard.
1. The Standard states that it is “Ideal”for a Cairn to be 10 inches at the
shoulders.
a) Unlike the Norwich Standard that states "A Norwich is NOT TO
EXCEED 10 inches. In other words it is not a fault for a Cairn to exceed the
10 inch height so long as the dog is in proportion.
ISSUE 106
PAGE 8
Breeder’s Corner Cont’d
b) When the Cairn Standard was written most Cairns averaged about 10
inches and, since size includes height, weight and length it was necessary to
use a measurement as a ‘for instance’. So, in other words, if a Cairn is 10
inches at the withers it will be 15 inches from front of chest to back of
hindquarters. And, weight (dogs) 14 lb. (slightly in excess for dogs over 2 yr.)
Therefore, an 11 in. dog will be 15 1/2 in. long and weigh about 15 lb. To
describe all the measurements would be a bit much. However, it would be a
good idea to recommend that a maximum of 12 inches be emphasized as
larger dogs start losing type.
2. Cairns are to have SMALL, POINTED EARS. The only way I can
describe small is that you will know a large ear when you see it.
3. “SHORT TAIL in proportion to the head.”The current Interpretation
has it wrong and is the reason we now see so many long tails in the ring
today. And what’s worse is, if the tail is to be to the tip of the ears and the
ears are large the tail will be longer yet.
4. The Standard also calls for the Cairn to be of balanced proportions, and
“appear neither leggy nor too low to ground”. This is not mentioned in the
Interpretation booklet. I asked Lydia Hutchinson once how she would
describe balanced length of leg, she replied, “The distance from the ground
to elbow should be equal in length as from elbow to the top of the
shoulders”. When dogs start getting taller than 12 inches, (which the FCI
standard calls for) nature is going to take over and shorten the body length to
help balance the dog. (Much like the West Highland White, remember
Westies are white Cairns.)
5. Coat
a.) The Standard says the Cairn skull is to be “broad in proportion to
length and well furnished with hair on the top of the head, which may be
softer than the body coat." However, it should be understood that a Cairn
with harder head furnishings might look different because the coat will lay
flatter and not stand up off the head as a softer coat will. As long as the head
is well furnished and has shaggy eyebrows, both furnishings should be
judged equal.
ISSUE 106
PAGE 9
Breeder’s Corner Cont’d
b.) The Standard states, “Hard and weather resistant. Must be double
coated with profuse harsh outer coat and short, soft, close furry
undercoat”. There is a tendency these days of a softer coat in general being
exhibited. Whether it is due to incorrect grooming or genetically produced,
this needs to be corrected for the sake of the breed. The Interpretation
booklet (pg. 13) does an excellent job clarifying the Standard on this point.
6. As for the legs, the Standard states legs must be covered with "hard
hair". Currently, in the Interpretation there is nothing mentioned about leg
furnishings.
So by keeping the Standard in America as it stands, it is hopeful that
breeders will adhere more closely to it, thereby doing what is right for the
Cairn, and preserving the breed which is what our Club was established to
do. Breeders are supposed to be the guardians of the breed and not swayed
by what is winning at the time. The judges can only judge what is presented
to them at any given show. So, do we present to them great specimens or
what is in style?
Isn’t it our job as breeders to educate judges? And isn’t it the judge’s job to
only reward quality animals with points and awards, and withhold ribbons
due to “lack on merit”? As breeders we need the courage to challenge
ourselves to do what is right in order to preserve the true Cairn breed.
There is a need for education when it comes to proper breeding practice and
breeders need to evaluate the bitch and the potential stud. Let's face it, there
are many well educated people showing and breeding dogs, but how many
of them are good dog breeders who know what they are doing to, and for,
the breed? It is imperative that we keep in mind that the purpose of the Club
is to "PRESERVE" the Cairn Terrier as a breed, and to promote and
improve on breeding better Cairns. That is the reason for having a
Standard in the first place.
Respectfully submitted,
Turgor is a medical term denoting the fullness or tension produced
by the fluid in cells; poor skin turgor may indicate a lack of fluids. To
measure the turgor of your dog, grip the scruff of his neck and gently
pull up on, or “tent,”the skin. If the skin does not snap back quickly to
Earthdog Trials Preparation
Special thanks to Bob Gann, Fred and Sandy Trzos, Harry Cornelius, Kathy
Stabler, Lee and Beth Dix, Ralph Faulk, and Stan Trummell for their hard
work in getting our Rist Canyon site ready for the 2010 earthdog season.
Bob and Stan spent most of Saturday cutting down and clearing out what
was left of about a dozen diseased trees that were either in the tunnel
areas or close enough to be a danger to dogs and people. That this was
hard work was apparent when we arrived to see where to start. Hoo-boy!
Sunday we took down the snow fences and got the real fences put up in
the junior and intro tunnels. An inventory was taken, too, of the needed
repairs to the tunnels; Harry and Dick Wilde will work on that activity. We
started a little after 10am and completed it all around 1:30pm. And that
included a lunch break. Thanks Kathy for the red velvet cake and the
Coronas. Not one complaint was heard about not having limes.
See you in June and July at the tests!
Dear Colorado Kennel Clubs and Dog Owners:
Protecting Our Rights
ISSUE 106
Our rights as responsible dog owners, fanciers and breeders continue to be threatened. The
AKC Government Relations Department is currently tracking over 1,000 bills at the local, state,
and federal level that have the potential to threaten the existence of responsible breeders, our
right to own the dogs of our choice, and our ability to raise or show the purebred dogs that we
have nurtured and struggled to improve and preserve for over 125 years.
As you know, the AKC Government Relations Department works closely with its state
federations to address canine legislative issues around the country. Federations play a key role
in ensuring that your rights as breeders, exhibitors, and owners are protected. AKC federations
are generally comprised of kennel club volunteers and other responsible owners and breeders
who care about the well-being of all dogs, the future of purebred dogs, and the right to
responsibly own and breed dogs.
The Colorado Federation of Dog Clubs serves as your AKC state federation, working to protect
and promote the rights of dog owners, fanciers and breeders in Colorado.
As our rights continue to be threatened, it is essential that we work together with a united voice.
We strongly encourage you to support your state federation to help ensure a strong, unified
voice for dogs and dog owners in Colorado.
For more information on the Colorado Federation of Dog Clubs, visit their website at
www.codogfederation.org or contact:
Linda Hart- (303) 783-5797, Kharahs@comcast.net
Dr. Klaus Anselm- (303) 733-8428, kjanselm@aol.com
Together we can work to preserve our right to own, breed, and exhibit our beloved dogs for
years to come.
Sincerely,
ISSUE 106
Hi Ray,
I'd like to thank you and all of the
members of the CTCD for the caring and
concern during my recovery from a
subdural hematoma that almost took my
life. So many people in email, on Face
Book and through the snail mail have sent encouraging notes
which have kept my spirits up. Cairn people really pull together
when thinks look desperate. When you see me just call me
Klutz or Grace since the injury was caused by my own
clumsiness. I just HAD to move that grooming table from the
back yard to the back room in a raging windstorm....got my feet
tangled and my little bod caught in a blast of wind and down I
went. It wasn't even that hard a fall, but it sheared an artery
which pumped blood into my skull that covered the entire right
hemisphere of my brain. You never know how fragile the
human body is until something like this happens. . At least I
slept through the worst of it. My family had to bear the brunt of
worry until I woke up for good several days after the fall. The
doctors say I should make a complete recovery. Of course, they
won't let me ride my horse, lift anything or drive for a few
months. Not that I would want to with this patch over one
eye. You'll see me back in the ring before you know it! Bardie
still needs to be finished.
