COSMETIC DEPARTMENT.<br />
LIQUID FOR CURLING THE HAIR. Two ounces scrapings oi<br />
lead, half ounce Litharge, one-quarter ounce Gum Camphor. Boil all<br />
in one pint of soft water for half an hour. Let it cool; pour off liquid<br />
and add to it one drachm Rosemary Flowers. Boil all again and strain,<br />
when it is ready for use. Apply about once a week.<br />
HAIR OIL- One gallon Cologne Spirits, 90 per cent proof, one<br />
pint Castor Oil, one ounce Oil Cinnamon. Mix well and it is ready for<br />
use.<br />
POWDER FOR THE COMPLEXION. Half ounce Tincture of<br />
Elder Blossoms, half ounce Beef Marrow, half pint Orange Flower Wa<br />
ter, one Cassia Buds, two ounces Bitter Almonds, four drachms Spirits<br />
Oriental Roses. Mix, and apply it in the evening and wash it off in the<br />
morning.<br />
PASTE TO PRODUCE WHISKERS. One ounce of Oil of Pari-<br />
cada, two ounces Southern Wood Bark, one ounce Dog's Lard. Fry<br />
over a slow fire until it forms a paste. Apply to the face once a day until<br />
the whiskers begin to grow.<br />
TO CLEAN THE TEETH. Castile Soap and Cigar Ashes applied<br />
with a soft rag is one of the best tooth preparations known.<br />
TO MAKE THE HAIR SOFT AND GLOSSY. One pint Alco<br />
hol, four ounces Castor Oil. Mix, and flavor with Bergamot. Apply<br />
frequently with the hands.<br />
TO REMOVE FRECKLES. Use Oxolate of Copper Ointment.<br />
HAIR TONIC. Sugar of Lead five grains, Sulphate Quinine two<br />
grains, Muriat of Ammonia one drachm, Glycerine six ounces, Distilled<br />
Water six ounces. Mix and apply two or three times per day.<br />
HAIR DYES. NO. 1. Distilled Water six ounces, Alcohol one<br />
ounce, Pyrogalic Acid one drachm. The Acid must be dissolved in the<br />
Alcohol before the water is added.<br />
NO. 2. Aqua Ammonia one ounce, Water one ounce, Nitrate of<br />
Silver two drachms. Dissolve the Silver in water and add the Ammonia.<br />
Cork tight and keep in a cool place.<br />
NO. 3. Water four ounces, Sulphate of 'Potash half ounce. Mix.<br />

To dye the hair or whiskers, have them free from dirt or soap suds. They<br />
should be a little damp. Add carefully No. 1, using care not to allow<br />
ihe dye to touch the skin. When somewhat dry apply No. 2; in about<br />
three minutes apply No. 3. Use care not to allow any of these prepara<br />
tions to touch the skin.<br />
TO BEAUTIFY THE TEETH AND MAKE THE BREATH<br />
SMELL SWEET AND PLEASANT. One ounce Chlorate of Lime<br />
in a pint of Soft Water, and let it stand 24 hours. Then pour off the<br />
clear water and add forty drops of Essence of Rose.<br />
TO MAKE THE CHEEKS AND LIPS ROSY. Use a little Red<br />
Carmine.<br />
PERFUMERY. Oils of Rosemary and Lemon each a half ounce,<br />
Bergamot and Lavender half drachm, Cinnamon four drops, Cloves and<br />
Rose each two drops, Alcohol one quart. Mix and let stand one week.<br />
HAIR RESTORATIVE- Sugar of Lead, Borax and Lac Sulphur<br />
each one ounce, Aqua Ammonia half ounce, Alcohol one gill. Mix and<br />
let stand 20 hours, then add Bay Rum one gill, fine Table Salt one table-<br />
spoonful, Soft Water three pints, Essence of Bergamot half ounce.<br />
NEW YORK BARBER'S STAR HAIR OIL. Castor Oil six and<br />
one-half pints, Alcohol one and one-half pints, Oil of Citronella one-half<br />
ounce, Lavender one-fourth ounce. Mix well, put in four ounce bottles,<br />
retail for 25 cents.<br />
CELEBRATED MOTH AND FRECKLE LOTION. For the<br />
skin and complexion; a great secret. Distill two handfuls Jessamine<br />
Flowers in a quart of Rose Water and a quart of Orange Water. Strain<br />
through porous paper and add a scruple of Musk and a scruple of Am<br />
bergris. Bottle and label. Splendid wash for the skin.<br />
IMPERIAL ONGUENT FOR FORCING WHISKERS AND<br />
MUSTACHE TO GROW. Made as follows: Two drachms of Ben<br />
zoin Comp., two drachms Tincture of Cantharides, six ounces of Castor<br />
Oil, nine and one-fourth ounces Alcohol, one drachm Oil of Bergamot.<br />
Mix well, bottle and label. Apply the Onguent night and morning. Cir<br />
culation should be stimulated with a rough towel.<br />
CURLOLINE, FOR MAKING THE HAIR CURL. One pound<br />
Olive Oil, one drachm Oil of Origanum, one and one-half drachms Oil<br />
of Rosemary. Mix well, bottle and label. Apply two or three times<br />
weekly. Will curl the straightest hair if not cut too short.<br />
HAIR RESTORATIVE AND INVIGORATOR. For a trifling<br />
cost. Sugar of Lead, Borax and Lac Sulphur of each one ounce, Aqua<br />
Ammonia one-half ounce, Alcohol one gill, mix and let stand for four-
