WOMEN OF COJ—An Invitation!
You are invited Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. to join Women
of Prayer—Strength in Numbers as we host the women of Camino
Da Vida in a time of fellowship, study, and prayer.
Our theme will be the women who saved Moses.
Check out Exodus 2:1-10 and then come check us out! Spanish speakers are
especially appreciated!

The Woobie Project
Hi – My name is Star Cooley. I am a Cadette Girl Scout and I
am working on earning my Silver Award. The Silver Award is
the second highest award you can earn in Girl Scouts. I call my
project “The Woobie Project” (after an old movie called
“Mr. Mom” - in it one of his children couldn’t give up his
woobie or security blanket)
What I am doing is collecting new and gently used blankets (woobies) and stuffed animals
(stuffies) or rag dolls to be given out to children who are in crisis and needing a little security of
their own. Last year when I saw the damage the wildfires caused and people were losing
everything. I realized when it happens to a child they don’t understand what’s going on and
they need something that can be their very own again to start the healing process. I also
realized the same is true when a child is in a really bad car accident or experiences a violent
crime they are traumatized and they need comfort. Nothing I do can change what has happened
but maybe through my project I can bring a little comfort and peace to a child in crisis.
I am collecting all these items for the Red Cross of New Mexico, and the Police and Fire
departments here in Rio Rancho.
Please help by donating your new or gently used woobies and stuffies to help the children of
New Mexico. I will have a tote located here at the church to make drop off easier. Thank you
for all your help.

A FUNdraiser for Lutheran Family Services
There will be a FUNdraiser event to benefit Lutheran Family Services on Sunday,
March 24th (all day) at California Pizza Kitchen, ABQ Uptown.
Lutheran Family Services will received 20% of what people spend on food and
all beverages. The funds will directly benefit the Refugee and Asylum
Programs.
Flyers are available on the bulletin board in the Fellowship area (they may
not be available at the restaurant).

Lent at Community of Joy
Final Wednesday in Lent: March 20th
We give up things for Lent as a way of identifying ourselves with Christ’s
time of voluntary self-deprivation during his 40 days in the wilderness.
This was how Jesus prepared himself to begin his ministry, and it is one
way we can prepare ourselves to celebrate Easter and to rededicated and
refocus ourselves to following the message of Christ each year.
As is tradition at Community of Joy, the Soup Supper is meant to be a sparse,
simple meal. We ask that you join us in this tradition by bringing only soup
and/or bread. Please, no desserts.
A Great Idea! How about bringing your own bowl, silverware
and cup to help cut down on trash and make us more GREEN!
Everyone is welcome to join us for our Lenten Soup Suppers beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Please bring soup or bread to share – no desserts
There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex
The Wednesday Lenten Holden Evening Prayers begins at 7:00 p.m.
Our Lenten offerings during the Wednesday evening services will be
collected in support of the mission and ministry of our partner
congregations Camino de Vida in Albuquerque and Iglesias Cristo Rey in
El Paso, Texas. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items for
COJ’s Helping Pantry and Storehouse West.
Lenten Journey
Lenten Journey will be performed on Palm Sunday ,
March 24th at Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian
church, 1801 Montano Rd NW in Albuquerque.
The performance will begin at 4:00 p.m.
Lenten Journey is a suite of original pieces composed by
Aaron Howe depicting lectionary readings during the
season of Lent.
Lenten Journey rehearsals are not being held at
Community of Joy. Singers and musicians gather at
Shepherd of the Valley church on Sundays, March 17 and
24 from 2:00—3:30 p.m.

Holy Week at Community of Joy
Journeying with the Cross on Good Friday
A Growing and Strong Tradition of COJ
Our Good Friday (March 29) walk to Chimayo is quickly
approaching. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this New
Mexico tradition, it is a annual pilgrimage that many Christians
partake in. El Santuario de Chimayo is said to have special
healing powers.
The purpose of our walk is to experience a pilgrimage to a sacred
place on the day Christ was crucified. We will take turns helping
each other carry the cross (the one hanging on the wall just
outside the sanctuary).
7:00 a.m. Meet in COJ parking lot
7:15 a.m. Depart from COJ
10:30 a.m. Park our vehicles and begin our walk
12:30—1:00 p.m. Depart from Chimayo
3:30—4:00 p.m. Arrive at COJ parking lot
The walk is approximately 2 miles each way and is of moderate
difficulty. It is uphill on the way to El Sanctuario and contains some
loose dirt areas. Please wear comfortable shoes with good tread and
wear weather appropriate clothing. Pack a lunch to bring with you if
you’d like.
Pleases sign the sign-up sheet that is on the table under the cupola
so we have an idea of how many will be attending.
Directions to El Santuario de Chimayo
Take 1-25 north and look for 599 north — the bypass around Santa Fe—get on 599 north (you
will go under 1-25 heading toward Taos, Chimayo.) It is about 12 miles to Hwy 84/285 (the
speed limit is low here and folks get pulled over). Take the Espanola/84/285 exit (not the
Santa Fe exit) and you will be on Hwy 84/285.
You pass the Opera, Buffalo Thunder Resort and look for Nambe exit (after Los Alamos exit—
don’t take the L.A. exit). Take a right at 503 Nambe. This is the main walking road to the
Sanctuario. It is very slow here with cars parked on either side of road. You will pass the
Nambe church about 2 miles along the way.
It is 7 miles to the corner of Hwy 503 and Santa Fe 98 (our road to Chimayo). Again, pilgrims
are everywhere and you simply can’t go fast. There is parking at the corner of Hwy 503 and
Santa Fe 93.

We’re running low on Communion Bread!
Please pick up the easy recipe for the Communion bread, making a
recipe once in a while, placing four loaves in a zip lock freezer bag, and
putting it in the church kitchen freezer! The recipe is in the bread basket on
the table under the cupola (dome-shaped ceiling). Thanks for serving our
Lord with your cooking skills!
GOOD SAMARITAN FUND AND ALBERTSON’S
The Albertson’s Community Partners Program is an easy way to
provide funds to Community of Joy’s Good Samaritan Fund.
Here’s how the program works. Pick up an Albertson’s
Community Partners card (located on the table under the cupola). Use
the card when paying your grocery bill at Albertson’s. COJ will
receive a portion of the receipts. COJ then receives a check
quarterly—this money helps support our Good Samaritan Fund.

sanctuary, remain sparse of extra
decorations, including flowers.
