LOST LABOE—FALSE ECOHOMY.
The coat of agricultural jrodneta is em
braced in
1st. The Cost of Preparing the Soil.
2d. The cost of Seed. ~
3d. The cost of Manure and its appli
cation.
4th. The cost of Cultivation of Crops.
5th. The cost of Gathering Crops.
The best farmer then, is he who can
get the largest and best returns with the
most economical expenditure for the above
items.
1ST. THE COST OF PREPARING THE soni.
This does not refer to the securing the
least outlay, but rather to the greatest out
lay that can be made with an increased
ratio of profit.
With this fact before us, what farmer
can afford to put out his early surplus
earnings on bond and mortgage at seven
per cent., if his farm has never been un
der-drained or sub-soil plowed? Expe
rience has fully proved that money may
be judiciously applied to under-draining
and sub-soil plowing, and that it will re
pay itself in full with interest, from in
creased income, in the first five years,
leaving a continuous increase of income
for the future, while the original invest
ment being already returned, may be ap
plied elsewhere.
Shallow plowing, then, without under-
draining and sub-soil plowing, is false
economy. Since soils fully prepared, as
above, never suffer from drouth, and pro
duce larger results with the same amount
of outlay for future culture it clearly
proves that under-draining and sub-soil
plowing are not lost labor.
2D. THE COST OP SEED.
Poor seed is dear at any price; good
seed is always cheapest.
In soils prepared as above suggested,
seed germinates with greater certainty
than in shallow plowed soils, and as mea
dows so prepared never run out, no re-
seeding will be called for. Taking care,
therefore, to raise or buy good seed is not
fake economy.
When seed is required to be used
broadcast, do not sow it by hand; Ca-
hoon's and other broadcast seed sowers,
will distribute it more evenly, in less
time, and less seed need be used. As
one man can sow as many acres with these
machines, as ten men without them, in
the same time, his labor is not lost. When
seed is to be planted, or sowed in hills or
drills, it may be done with greater regu
larity by proper machines, thus lesseuinjj
the amount of labor in their after culti
vation as with straight rows, horse, in
stead of hand tools, may be used, and one
man do the work of ten with hand tools.
Thus, the farmer who uses cheap seeds,
or sows them by hand instead of by ma
chine, will loose labor and practice false
economy.
3d. THE COST OF MA.VURE AND ITS AP
PLICATION.
If soils are inert and require lime or
potash, it is false economy not to apply
them, for other manures seldom contain
them in so cheap a form as shell lime aud
unleac-hed wood ashes, nor will other ma
nures avail with full economy, if lime and
potash be wanting. Therefore not to use
these is false economy, and as the texture
and loosences of the soil will be improved
by their use, they will prevent lost labor.
The proper composting of barn-yard
and other manures of the iarm, with a
drainage-cistern at the end of the heap,
provided with a pump to throw back the
drainage and prevent fire fanging, is not
lost labor.
The adage should not be "With how
little manure can I raise a crop ?" but ra
ther "How much manure can be used
with increased profit ?" As probably no
farmer has ascertained how large a quan
tity may be used with increased profit,
aud every farmer knows that he cannot
possibly create as much manure on his
farm as he miyht use with increased pro
fit ; he should buy freely of such fertili
zers as he finds the most profitable. It is
both/«&c economy and lust labor to grow
crops without full application of fertili
zing materials.
It is false economy and lost labor to
cart materials, of little worth as manure,
and of great weight, even if at no original
cost, for a distauce, which renders the
cartage more than equal to the manorial
valne. We have seen thousands of loads
of nearly valueless swamp muck, spent
tan, saw dust, apple pomace, gas-house
lime, and other things, improperly appli
ed, and the cost of transportation was
many times as great as would have pur
chased more valuable fertilizers.
1th. TIIE COST OP THE CULTIVATION - OF
CROPS.
This is the greatest with rusted tools,
and particularly if of an inappropriate
kind.
Forks, spades, shovels, and hoes, are
lighter, stronger and less liable to rust if
made of steel than of iron ; but it is false
economy to use even these in any case
where the small horse tools may be ap
plied, while the latter prevent lost labor.
In cultivating row crops, the lifting sub
soiler, carrot weeder, horse hoes, etc.
save nine-tenths of the cost of cultivation
as compared with hand tools, while the
work may all be done in lime, and simply
because less time is required to do it.
5th. OATIIERI.NO CROPS.
Any farmer having twenty acres in
grass or grain, is guilty of false economy
if lie uses a scythe or cradle, instead of
reaper or mower.
Hand tools should not be used for dig
ging potatoes; the horse potato digger
prevents lost labor, even when used on a
single acre.
Row crops may be loosened, so that
they may be readily picked up by hand,
by running a large sized sub-soil lifter
along side of them at full depth; beside
leaving the soil in better tilth to improve
by winter frosts; and the use of hand
tools in digging carrots, beets, parsnips,
etc., is lost labor and fake economy.
To continue the use of the old style
sub-soil plow, in place of the lifting sub
soil plow, in place of the lifting sub-soilcr,
is false economy.
Rusty tools of all kinds should be
cleaned before being used, and a single
experiment with a rusted plow, spade or
fork, compared with bright ones, will
fully illustrate the fact.
Use such plows as by the Dinamometer
have been proved ' to require less force
than those you have, for to continue the
use of any inferior implement, is lost labor
Mid false economy.
In the use of hand tools, endeavor to
acquire proper tact (skill) in handling.
Never cut wood with a dull axe. Kemem-
ber, that the force with which an axe
strikes, "is equal to its weight multiplied
by its velocity," and great velocity can
only obtained by a free woodman's swing,
and not by inappropriate expenditure of
strength, for it is lost labor. Remember,
that while Richard Cour de Lion prided
himself on cutting in two an inch bar of
iron with his heavy sword, that Saladdin
showed his superiority by throwing a
silken scarf in the air aud severing it, while
falling, by expertly drawing a light scym-
tar across it. The cutting of the iron
bar was lost labor, as no occasion could
probably offer for any use which the ex-
pertness of Saladdin would not be equal
to, with a less expenditure of force and
greater quickness of repetition.
Do not carry heavy loads in hand carts
and wheel barrows for long distances, nor
light loads in wagons and carts for short
distances; it is lost lalorand wast of time.
The use of badly fitting collars and
harness is fake ecouomy.— Working far
mer.
