by Elisabeth H. Sanders-Park of WorkNet Solutions :: 2011 Careers Conference – Madison, WI
The way employers hire is changing, so job seekers must search for work differently. This session offers 4 steps, plus tips, tricks and
Consider what is available in the market, but stay focused on work in a field that fascinates them, allows them to use skills they have
and enjoy, and supports their most important values.
Often, the difference in out-shining your competition (who probably all have similar skills) and getting the job is passion… and the
intangible qualities, willingness to do the extra, and natural qualifications that come with it. -- The 6 Reasons: Pages 144-151
#2 -Prove They Can Do the Job
Think like an employer, identify their most important needs in all 6 areas in an ideal candidate for the job for the job, and prove the
candidate meets them. Develop tailored marketing pieces -- discover their PADMAN, use their terms, replace generic selling points
with specific proof -- and find creative ways to deliver them.
The 6 Reasons You’ll Get the Job
Presentation [Image] - Does the way you look, sound and act positively represent my company?
Attitude [Personality] - Do I want to work with you and do you fit in to my company culture?
Motivation [Loyalty] - Do your actions and goals promote my company and its goals?
Ability [Aptitude] - Can you do the job, or learn it quickly?
Network [Contacts] - Do the people you know and attract benefit my company, or could they cause concern?
Especially when times are tough, employers hire candidates who understand that their job, no matter the title, is to make the
company profitable and successful. -- The 6 Reasons: Pages 22-44
#3 - Avoid Getting Screened-Out
Think like the employer (PADMAN), identify any need the candidate cannot prove they meet and catch any additional issues that
could concern employers and get the candidate screened-out, then…
CREATE SOLUTIONS for each barrier by having the candidate learn a new skill, access a resource, change their job target, adjust
their own outlook, adjust the employer’s perception of them, and/or craft good answers.
the people who can hire. Being great for the job isn’t enough -- the person who can say
‘yes’ must be convinced. 90%+ of candidates, many very talented, are screened-out
before the people who can actually hire them enter the process.
WHERE :: Hidden Market Opportunities vs. Open Market Openings
The Hidden Job Market is made up of the 80%+, non-advertised employment
opportunities in a community. Searching here is like seeing the whole iceberg! While
others float above, you dive in and go to the employers you want! It requires
creativity, action, and risk because you don’t just submit apps/resumes and wait for a
call. It’s the best place to find a job in any economy.
HOW :: ‘Side Doors’ to Decision Makers
These are the quickest and best ways to get to the people who can hire you, and
present yourself in ways that let you shine. They let you connect with employers and
get job offers, while your competition waits in the lobby.
THE FOUR KEYS
Get noticed by the right people – the person with the power to hire
Get noticed for the right reasons – a need, hard-to-find quality, attitude or skill
Don’t submit a resume or ask about a job until you impressed the decision maker
Be politely persistent -- The 6 Reasons: Pages 205-209
