Roberts Rules
Dan Roberts
But Can You Keep it Off?
“Look at me!” I roared to my cat that was
starring at me so intently. “Do you realize
that your Lord & Master has the body of a
Chippendale?”
Ok, I admit that such declaration might
have been a slight exaggeration. Ignoring my
royal command, the feline apparently was not
impressed (or amused) and quickly scampered
away.
But as I stepped off the scale, I had a sense
of satisfaction. I had done it.
I lost fifty pounds.
Now believe me, I’m not boasting about it.
This is not the first time I did a diet/exercise
program.
Having been “calorie-challenged” since
my college days, there have been many, many
other times that I dropped weight only to
hope however that I would never have to go
through such “torture” again.
And with the holidays fast approaching,
there is that nagging concern that I will not
be able to keep it off.
For faithful readers of yours truly, I trust you
can understand what a life changing year it
has been. Since my Amy’s death last September,
my entire existence for those subsequent
months consisted of simply sitting in my recliner,
watching television and trying to tune
out the world.
I did not want to be around anyone - except
Santa is coming to the Sun City MacDonald
Ranch for its annual Variety Club Christmas
Show and everyone is invited to join in
for all the fun and entertainment.
The show will be at the Sun City Community
Center, 2020 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway
in Henderson on Saturday, December 15 th at
Do you realize that your “Lord & Master” has the body of a
Chippendale?
Ben & Jerry.
After several months and with football
games no longer on TV, I realized that my “fat
pants” were “obviously” shrinking and after
climbing only a few stairs, I felt like I was running
a marathon.
Being so disgusted with myself, I vowed it
was time for a change.
I rationalized that so long as I could not
sleep past 5 am anyway, I might as well get my
fat ass walking. It started slowly.
I was thrilled when I did ¼ mile, then exhilarated
when I did one mile. I admit it became
Sun City MacDonald Ranch Christmas Show
door prizes to welcome in the holidays.
an obsession.
I pushed myself to
go further and further
(I now do 4 miles per
morning) determined
that if the paramedics
found me lying on the
street with an apparent
heart attack, at least
they could say that I
went exercising.
And then there was
the most dreaded four
letter word known to
mankind – diet. I tossed
Ben and Jerry out of my
house along with Mr.
Pringles and began eating
salad until my eyes turned green.
I also started drinking so much damn water
I wondered why I just did not wear a diaper
so it would save me the constant trips to the
bathroom. But I was on a mission.
I even employed a “secret weapon.” I enlisted
the help, assistance and services of the
Stella Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Henderson.
Between Angela Drake and Dr. Stella’s encouragement,
advice and the i-Lipo Ultra +
(wonder) machine, I saw (actually saw!) my
waist lose inches. I still don’t know “how” and
truth-be-told, I simply fell asleep every time I
was there (See Angela’s article - page 24). All I
know however is that it worked.
Anyway one good thing about being on a
strict regiment; I now have a totally different
mind-set.
In the past, I freely admit that there was an
occasional time (or two) that I would look at
a woman (as former President Jimmy Carter
famously remarked) with “lust in my eyes.”
Now I only wonder if she can cook.
Sure it’s great to find clothes that have not
seen the light of day since before the millennium
and I still don’t know the proper and appropriate
response to readers who ask, “Have
you lost weight?”
Despite the accomplishment however, that
one question is always lurking around every
dessert: But can you keep it off?
By all means, don’t forget to comparative
“If it was not for your
group, these children would
not have a Christmas.”
For many years as a Co-Charities
Director of the Sun City Anthem’s
Women’s Club, our club had the
great pleasure of helping and assisting
with the needs of the Gordon
McCaw Elementary School in Henderson.
The school children at Mc-
Caw are from grade K-5 and are all
low income, high risk.
It began with a Christmas toy
drive and eventually we added nonperishable
foods so the children
(and their parents) would have
something most of our readers take
for granted – a Thanksgiving/Holiday
meal.
An unforgettable lady; Jackie
Walker was the principal of Gordon
McCaw in those days. And when
volunteers from Sun City Anthem
made our last food/toy drop at the
school (which happily consisted of a caravan of
Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen.
residents’ cars and trucks filled with huge bags
stuffed to the brim and overflowing) Ms. Walker
said, “If it was not for your
group, these children would
not have a Christmas.”
That sad declaration stayed
in my mind to this day. Even
though the Woman’s Club no
longer assists the school (and
I am no longer a member)
those words still haunt me.
When I joined The Vegas
Voice I told Publisher Dan
and President Ray about the
school and mentioned what
Principal Walker had said.
Without hesitation, their reply
was: “Let’s adopt McCaw!”
Although Ms. Walker has
been transferred this year to
another school, the new principal
is a charming lady by the
name of Jennifer Furman-Born.
She has warmly welcomed our
offer to get The Vegas Voice involved
as “Godparents for
McCaw Kids.”
Believe me, I realize that times are tough and
notwithstanding that we have been told that the
Great Recession is over, many, many readers
are still not convinced that the good times are
back. But no child, no matter the circumstances,
should go without a Christmas; or even worse, go
hungry on Thanksgiving.
Now I do not mean that children should be
without the latest video game or iPad, iTunes,
iPhone or whatever the latest “must have” electronic
device is out there. But every child should
have something. That’s what godparents do.
Our next step was to get a place, or multiple
locations where our wonderful readers who wish
Cover Story
to help could drop off non-perishable foods for
Thanksgiving and/or toys for Christmas. We are
very proud to announce that Henderson Mayor
Andy Hafen and his staff immediately stepped up
as godparents.
Without pause, Mayor Hafen made arrangements
for The Vegas Voice to use the Fire Stations
and Community Centers as drop-off points. See
the attached listing for all locations. And a great,
big Vegas Voice “Thank you, Mr. Mayor.”
The collection bins will be marked with our
Vegas Voice logo. Please make sure that any food
products are non-perishable and toys are not
wrapped so that the teachers will know what age
group is appropriate for your donation and/or if
it is meant for a boy of girl.
While preparing this article, the cynic in
Publisher Dan came out. He questioned that
although the locations listed were all well and
good if you lived in Henderson/Anthem, but
what about Vegas Voice readers who live in Siena
or Summerlin or Aliante?
He challenged me to come up with a solution.
After some thought, I figured it would be best
if I challenges those readers. So if you wish to
donate but would rather not come to the listed
locations, here’s what we’ll do.
Between myself, President Ray, our Vegas
Voice family (and even Publisher Dan), we will
personally make the rounds to you. We will happily
come and get whatever you wish to donate.
Please call me at The Vegas Voice (251-4441)
or email me at: rana@thevegasvoice.net and we
will schedule a date, time and place to happily
pick-up what you would like to donate. As I said,
that’s what godparents do.
We thank you in advance on behalf of the
children of McCaw for any help or donation you
wish to give.
Hollywood Memories
Beverly Washburn
Lovely Loretta
Well here it is, November already. A time for us
to reflect on our many blessings, although the
truth of the matter is that we should be thankful
every month!
Thinking of my many blessings, I must say
that one of the things I am most thankful for is
my beautiful and lifelong relationship with Loretta
Young. She was truly the epitome of a Hollywood
Star and a legend of the movie industry.
I had the pleasure of working with her many
times. I did a few of her anthology shows first titled
“Letter to Loretta,” which was actually based
on the many letters from fans. These shows then
turned into a weekly half hour TV show. The
name was later changed to the Loretta Young
Show.
Years later, she did another series called “The
New Loretta Young Show” and I played one
of her seven children. The title has since been
changed to “Christine’s Children” and can now
be found on DVDs.
In 1972 she sued NBC for showing re-runs
of her original TV show fearing that she would
be ridiculed for her gowns and hairstyle which
would then be 10 or 20 years old. She was
awarded more than half a million dollars in the
Sam Wagmeister
lawsuit.
Loretta won an Oscar for “The Farmer’s
Daughter” and also won three Emmys, making
her the first actress to win both and Oscar and
an Emmy. She was one of the first actresses to
command a six figure salary.
She was born Gretchen Young and at the age
of four worked in silent films as an extra. The
studios later changed her name to Loretta. Back
then, it was quite common for the studios to
change people’s names.
Seventy years of show business greatness hang
Seventy years paved the path for Robbie Robinson
to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of
Billy Ward’s Dominoes.
Robbie was playing saxophone in the early ‘50’s
for the legendary Johnny Otis band “when somebody
said they were auditioning singers to replace
the Dominoes’ Jackie Wilson. I got the job singing
second tenor.”
In 1940, as a North Carolina 10-year old, Robbie’s
dad, a tailor and part-time musician, handed
Robbie the trumpet he played through elementary
and high school before becoming a founding
member of the Rhythm Kids. “There were three
trumpets, a tenor sax, trombone and a rhythm
section. One day, our saxophone player quit and
our drummer handed me the sax. I was crazy
enough to try it,” Robbie beams.
It’s that saxophone, and the courage to put it
down and step to the microphone as a vocalist
that’s kept Robbie in the spotlight.
Robbie Robinson shares a dance with Treasure,
Our Beverly, child actress Tracy Stratford and
Loretta Young
She was married three times and it was well
known that she had a daughter out of wedlock,
conceived in 1935 while filming “The Call of
the Wild.” The father was the very married Clark
Gable. This affair and their daughter were kept
secret for several decades for fear of ruining their
careers.
She was a kind, caring and loving woman
who always donated to her Catholic charities.
In her later years, she was married to Jean Louie,
the Oscar winning costume designer and lived
in Palm Springs.
Loretta Young was truly one of the sweetest ladies
I have ever worked with. I’m so proud to say
that I stayed in touch with her until she died in
2000 of cancer at 87.
We spoke on the phone many times. My only
regret is that I never took her up on her wonderful
offer of letting me and my husband come
and stay for a weekend. I have since learned the
importance of not “putting things off” as none
of us are promised tomorrows.
Until next time, remember: A grateful person
trusts enough to give life another chance and to
stay open for surprises.
in 1956, a “new kid” walked into the club,
“wearing a white ball cap with a black bill
and a black leather jacket. Somebody got
the bright idea that we take a picture with
him, ‘That’s Elvis Presley’ they said. Another
guy in the band says, ‘Who the hell is Elvis
Presley?’”
At the Club Liberty in DC, 1949 Robbie
came up with his gimmick - blowing the
saxophone upside down from his knees.
In 1956, Seattle’s Birdland hosted a Battle
of the Bands between Robbie and another
legend, Big Jay McNeely.
“Big Jay would play lying on his back. I
turned my horn upside down and won the Battle.
They put my picture on a matchbox cover,” Robbie
says. “If I blow from my knees now, somebody
would have to come pick me up.”
In the 60’s, he and his brother Robin travelled,
People & Places
performing as the Robinson Brothers Review. At
Hollywood’s Rounder’s Club, the ambitious Master
of Ceremonies, Lou Rawls, had his eye on the
headlining spot only to be rebuffed with “I got my
singers” by the owner.
Today Robbie sits in with bands around town
and in Laughlin and performs with his Reflections
rock and roll tribute band. One memorable
night at Shifty’s on West Sahara, former Marvin
Gaye drummer Bugsy Wilcox invited Robbie to
the stage.
That night, Robbie’s Saints didn’t just go
marching in, they marched everywhere around
the joint; including to the delight of all who were
there, those Saints marched in and then out of the
men’s room. How it echoed against the porcelain.
Look for this rock and roll legend performing
around town - sometimes in the Sun City communities.
Vicki Wentz
Last month, in a moment of unbridled idiocy,
I decided it was time to refinance the house.
I’ve done this on a regular basis; not because
I have any sense of astute mortgage
practices, but because, in a never-ending quest
to have enough money to buy gas, I am calling
my mortgage broker almost daily to see
what the newest lowest rate would be - and if
it would help my monthly nail-biting. (In his
never-ending quest to stop hearing from me,
he has changed his location several times, but
somehow I always find him, he says with a
desperate chuckle.)
To be honest, the monthly nail-biting can
be a teensy bit thrilling; wondering who’ll get
paid this month, as I toss the pile of bills toward
the hat on the floor. On the other hand,
I’m approaching an age where that kind of
excitement can precipitate a stroke.
So, I’m going to turn down that adrenaline
rush, and try actually matching my income
with my out-go...something our government
should attempt occasionally.
Rick, my mortgage guy, emailed me some
papers to sign and a list of things he’d need
from me. I hit print, and went off to vacuum
the living room...and the dining room...and
the kitchen...and the bedroom...and then I
painted the house. It was still printing.
Of course, out of approximately 782 pages,
I really only needed 6, but Rick seems to think
people actually read all this stuff before they
sign it. Like I have time for that when I’m in
the middle of painting the house!
T h e
first page
was a list
of things
to send
to him:
Last two
pay stubs
- as a
substitute
teacher
now, who
doesn’t
get paid in
the summer,
this
was, shall
we say,
awkward; last two bank statements - which
horrifyingly reflect the absence of teacher pay,
as well; 2011 tax returns - which are neatly organized
in an old U-Haul box somewhere in
the attic, along with my life insurance policy,
the deed to the house, the children’s birth certificates,
my Will, my Official Nancy Drew Fan
Club card, and my son’s first lost tooth.
He also wanted a copy of my driver’s license
- always a stunningly complimentary picture
(looks like I just ate a bad chicken) and the
Vicki’s Voice
We Need Your Statements, Your Tax Return, Your Blood & Your Firstborn
home equity loan documents; inducing a
pathetic need to explain how much I’ve withdrawn,
although the whole not-getting-paidin-the-summer
thing should help do that.
There were 5 pages to sign and return.
Again, I don’t really read it. For all I know, I
could have just agreed to eat nothing but lima
beans for the rest of my life, or become the
11th wife of a Saudi prince.
I couldn’t do everything immediately, because
there was a “My Fair Wedding” marathon
on TV, so I was forced to put it off until
today, and I’d found everything except a page
or two from my tax return; but I figured no
one would notice - they’d be laughing too hard
at the “total income” line.
As I piled it on the couch to organize, I
noticed for the first time Rick’s note: “I need
these within 48 hours.” Ha ha, I thought, that
Rick’s a card!
After spending the next hour hysterically
flipping papers all over the couch in an effort
to give the whole package some clarity and
organization, I leaped into the car and raced
to his almost-closing office...where he assured
me that the next morning would have been
fine.
Apparently, instead of moving again, he’s
decided to precipitate my stroke all by himself.
Vicki began her career as a weekly columnist with the Durham Herald-Sun newspaper
The Internet Bar Scene
Being single again
can be overwhelming,
but add this new
internet method of
meeting people and
the idea sends shockwaves.
For a person
who thinks too much
as it is, this scene is a
disaster for the mind.
I went on a dating
site and entered a new
orbit. Everything I
knew had changed.
Remember when
Friday was single’s night and Saturday
was date night? Not now.
So how do you step into this new
world?
When I was part of a couple, I never
thought twice about complimenting
a man on his work or attitude. Maybe
we shared an interest and I wanted to
speak to him.
A phone call wasn’t out of the question
when I was part of a couple. As
single, it’s considered flirting.
I get my first email on the site and
I answer. Nothing. I answer someone
again, we say a few things and although
our styles are not the same, it’s
a nice, polite exchange and everyone
moves along. That’s good.
There were some who sent a “wink.”
An electronic wink is the way to flirt in
high tech talk. Who knew?
Why would someone 2,000 miles
away email me? A local man also
made his intentions quite clear in a
polite sort of way. Gotta hand it to him,
he cut right to it!
I hope he finds what he’s looking for.
That age gap was 23 years and probably
would have injured me.
Then I get noticed by a very interesting
person and I’m a deer in headlights.
Do I answer? How about that
wink thing? What should be a normal,
calm introduction has turned to brain
chaos.
Reading his page he seems smart, arrogant
and fun. He either has a fabu-
lous sense of humor or is just arrogant
and smart.
I look again at his profile. Great big
smile, silver hair, dress shirt and tie.
Probably an office photo.
He lives about 150 miles away. Seems
safe enough. No risk of running into
him. He started it so I reply.
Now I’m nervous, bouncing around
like I’m 20 and wondering if he’s that
good guy. None of my thoughts are
connected. Every paranoid emotion I
have has now risen to the surface.
We’re talking about an email for
goodness sake! How stupid is that?
You never forget that uneasy feeling
when meeting someone new. While my
mind was on spin cycle, it never occurred
to me I might not like him.
Ever had the feeling the world just
has to like you or you’ll fold up? Forget
being 20. I’m 12 and I have issues.
My profile was pretty straight forward.
No mention of moonlit beach
walks or candlelight. I put myself on a
path for a what-you-see-is-what-youget
kind of match.
At 60 you get to do that. The beauty
of being 60 is you probably won’t be
changing, you can say no and the diet
is on the back burner for now.
My reply said he could probably run
circles around me. His reply? “Are you
up to the challenge?” I laughed out
loud, by myself, knowing he had read
me pretty well. This was going to be
fun!
Accepting Change
Summer is officially over. Our cars aren’t
being preheated to 170 degrees, and we aren’t
perpetually soggy with perspiration.
It’s fall - my favorite season.
I love the crisp air and changing leaves
(we do get some). The summer heat is just
a memory, the hum of air conditioners has
floated away, the excitement of the holidays is
around the corner, and there is promise of a
new year.
I’ve learned to view change as an opportunity!
However when I was younger (and not as
wise) I wasn’t good with change coming into
my life and actually feared it. No more.
If you accept change then you are a lucky
soul who is probably happy and creative. However
if you expect everything to stay the same,
then I’m sure you’ve been disappointed.
Twelve years ago, I listened to Dr. Jack Kornfield
read his book Buddhist Psychology every
morning as I drove to teach my college literature
classes. The book on tape was a Godsend
for me because at that time I was struggling
with the suicide of my best friend.
Linda and I had been friends for eleven
years. She was a hospice nurse, a true friend
and had helped me take care of my father
when he was ill. She was a good person; five
hundred people attended her memorial.
In Dr. Kornfield’s own words, this is what I
learned about change: “Change happens all
around us, all the time, yet we long for the predictable,
the consistent. We want the reassur-
ance that comes from
things remaining the
same. We find ourselves
shocked when people
die, even though death
is the most predictable
part of life.”
At that time I was
suffering horribly over
Linda’s death. But in
his calming voice, Jack
Kornfield reassured me:
We must accept change
whether we view it as
good or bad. Change is
not what makes us unhappy;
it’s the grasping,
clinging and wanting things to stay the same
that makes us suffer.
His ideas shook me to my core, helped me
Creating Happiness
get through this trying time and. I’ve never
forgotten what he theorized.
Now when a change comes into my life, bad
or good, I remember his advice. The moment
we start to grasp and cling to anything, be it
possessions, money, our lifestyle, a person,
then that is when we stall, lose velocity, happiness
and our creativity. We begin to worry, fret
and the connection with our creative world
evaporates.
Looking at it another way, understanding
change is what creativity is all about. When we
create something, whether it’s writing a novel,
painting a room or making our own Christmas
cards, we change our lives. Humans actually
thrive on change because it’s energizing.
For November practice this: Find creative
ways to accept change and embrace the fact
that nothing stays the same. When you do, you
will find joy, and you’ll be the most creative.
10 The Voice For Your Health, Wealth & Good Times
I don’t think I would know what to do
anymore if I didn’t have a dog (or three)
on my feet while working at home. The
best is working or rehearsing at the piano
where you have to use both feet to operate
the pedals, and you have a paw or a
little head resting on one or both feet.
I’ve been very fortunate that all the animal
family I’ve
been blessed
with in life have
enjoyed music -
some even participating.
Even
both feline children
enjoyed or
were fascinated
by it.
My first cat,
Fred, used to
sit next to me
on the piano
bench every
time I played at
home. He eventually
learned
(and liked) to
play along, always
sitting on
my right side
where he could
hit some high
notes and think he was extremely cool.
Baxter, the next cool-kitty in my life
didn’t care to play along, but liked to flop
down around the bench and liked taking
his “bath” to music. It became a ritual
for him.
My canine kids were and are just as involved.
Buster loved to sing when I played
his songs.
Our big show-stopper was “How Much
Is That Doggie In The Window” in G. I
would sing the words and he would come
in exactly on the “woooo-wooooo” parts,
sitting on my lap while I played the piano
around him.
When not singing, he would lie near
the piano to listen and nap until I was
finished. While Buster was in his early
singing career, I found Petey, my next
rescue.
Where Buster had been a dumped-off
little spaniel, Peaty was an abused half
golden retriever and half akita who became
a stunning big guy. His favorite
My Musical Animal Family
place was to lie right under the piano
while I played. He tolerated Buster’s singing
but preferred just piano.
My animal family is now Shadow, Bandit
Thomas and Bunny Boo Boo (rabbit),
all rescues.
Shadow is always right at my feet either
at the desk, piano, or music workstation.
It’s the
same with her
adopted brother,
Bandit.
The only
difference is
he has to be
touching me
either with a
paw or two, or
with his head
on my foot.
Thomas, on
the other hand,
hears the piano
and immediately
wants up
on my lap.
Being a little
too big for a
lap-dog, I end
up playing with
one hand as
he stands with
paws on my legs, while the other hand
pets and scratches. Bunny is still kind of
“new” so I haven’t figured out her musical
tastes yet.
We’re all currently working on learning
Bunny is not a toy or a snack. The
music will come after that!
Most of the energetic performers appear in both
shows that seemed designed for a more senior
Broadway Celebration is, as the title suggests,
homage to Broadway filled with tunes that will
make you sing out loud or clap along.
The youthful cast members start right off
The frequent costume changes add to the
fun. The performers hop off the stage to get
close and personal with the audience.
What they lack in numbers, they make up
John Rothman
One thing Las Vegas is not short of is
magicians, but I want to talk about a different
kind of magic. The magic of being
able to stay involved in the performing
arts.
I’m lucky enough to still be doing it at
my age (I hate that phrase) and working
on “Vampires the Musical” for the Anthem
Performing Arts Club. It has been exciting,
exhausting, rewarding, challenging,
fun - and plain, well, magical.
Staging an original work is daunting
as one has nothing to refer to, but then
again it gives one the freedom to create
something fresh and new. I enjoyed amazing
support and have been provided with
some magical memories. I give everyone
my heartfelt thanks.
Talking about memories and keeping
them alive. What about YouTube!
It’s a treasure trove of showbiz memories
and probably the greatest show on
earth. The dancers I know continuously
find gems from old movies and they get
eagerly forwarded.
Talk About Magic
The Showstoppers opened the show with
Midnight Story
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers,
Cyd Charisse (my all-time favorite) Ann
Miller, Rita Hayworth, Donald O’Connor
and the unlikely hoofers like Bob Hope
and James Cagney are there for the asking.
Simply click and enjoy.
Patrick Swayze, Travolta. Clever compilations
with music like “Staying Alive”
bring a whole new dimension to dance
and present day TV shows like “So You
ier costumes. But by and large, both shows,
produced by David King and Spirit Productions,
are about bringing the familiar songs
with clothing of the times and energetic choreography.
The cast is young and has seemingly
boundless energy which pours out and draws
you in as they sing and dance in smaller numbers
and ensemble pieces.
It’s not Broadway, but its solid feel-good entertainment.
Tickets are $49 for the 6 pm production
of Broadway Celebration and $59 for
Dancing Queen at 8 pm.. (Both dark Mondays)
A combo special provides both shows for a
total cost of $69. This can be divided into different
days.
Always check for other discounts. For more
information, call the box office at 866/606-
Think You Can Dance” and
“Dancing with the Stars”
are hugely popular.
Don’t get me started on
that last one. The expertise
of the judges is not in
question, but some of that
scoring!
Here’s my gripe for Vintage
Whine this month. The
stunning Derek Hough and
bubbling Shawn Johnson
do “the best number we’ve
ever seen on the show” so
let’s give them an 8.
Yeah right, and a 7
for Bristol. Go figure. I have all sorts of
choice words that I happily hurl at the TV
set. I know it matters zilch, but it makes
me feel so much better.
How the year has flown! We’ll soon be
ShowBuzz
starting rehearsals on our holiday show at
Sun City MacDonald Ranch. I’m calling it
“One Night in Vegas” and it will feature
the cream of our senior performers doing
what they do so well: entertaining.
There will be no shortage of glamour
and glitz as we ring in the end of yet
another year. It’s not your traditional
“Christmas” show, but should have something
for everyone in the colorful and
lively mix. Watch this column for future
details.
I’m all over the place this month and
in closing I would like to take a quiet moment
and say “goodbye” to the lovely senior
ladies who will dance no more. I’m
happy to have known them, even for the
shortest time.
They will be remembered for their
grace, charm and love of the dance. Sleep
gently.
Edith Piaf, born Edith Giovanna Gassion,
a petite, 4’8” French singer with a big, heavy
vibrato voice, had a life of survival of the fittest.
In 1915, it’s said she was born in the
streets of Paris, (though her birth certificate
indicated a hospital,) to a 17 year old street
singer, prostitute. She was abandoned by her
mother, suffered temporary blindness, grew
up in her paternal grandmother’s brothel
and by age 14, was singing in the streets with
her acrobat/actor father. At 17, she had married,
bore a daughter (but lost her to meningitis)
and divorced.
Piaf had many affairs with men. She, too,
was an absent mother, her husband raising
their child until the child’s death. In her later
life, Piaf often bailed her drunken mother
out of jail.
Several people taught her refinement and
culture of upper-class French society. Louis
Leplee, a cabaret owner, impressed by her
unusual voice, helped her and made her a
star act, naming her Piaf - meaning ‘little
sparrow’ - the name she adopted.
Piaf was accused of collaborating with
high-ranking Nazis, but this association
cleverly gave her access to French prisoners
of war, many of whom she helped escape.
Two years later, Honda Motor Company,
Over 50 years later, 134,000 jobs are created
Honda has always stated that their company
Filled with grief and guilt,
having encouraged him to
and sang the hit song: Hymn
She later became friends
with his wife and children.
Her last husband, a handsome
Greek hairdresser
turned singer/actor, was half
her age, but became part of
her performances and stayed
with her till her death at age
48.
In 1956, she recorded Les
Trois Cloches, (The Three
Bells,) with her male singing
group. It was a hit in the
states - renamed The Song
of Jimmy Brown. Her later
smash hit, La Vie en Rose, earned her a
Grammy Award.
After three car accidents, she became addicted
to alcohol and morphine, having delirium
tremens while trying to quit. She still
wrote another No. 1 hit, Non, Je ne Regrette
Rien, (No, I Regret Nothing).
While performing at the Waldorf Astoria
in New York, she collapsed on stage. She
persevered however. Her voice never lost its
power.
In 1963, after making her final recording
near Cannes, she died of stomach cancer.
Denied a funeral Mass by the Church because
of her life style, her funeral still drew
over 110,000 mourners.
She was buried in Paris where her museum
is located. This petite gamin incorporated
The Eyes Have It!
We’ve all heard the old Jewish proverb: “The
eyes are the mirror to your soul.” However, not
many people know that the eyes are also the map
to a person’s physical state of health.
In fact, Iridologists see the eyes as “windows”
into the body’s entire functioning system. Though
it seems a bit ironic that Iridology is so largely opposed
by traditional medical practitioners; yet doctors
themselves check patients’ eyes for a variety of
diagnostic purposes such as identifying back stress,
jaundice, drug and alcohol influence, fever, etc.
Although the origins of Iridology can be traced
back to the Chinese and Roman civilizations, it
wasn’t until the advancement of technology in the
early 19 th century that more extensive research in
the field of iris analysis was able to be performed.
Ask any practitioner or student of Iridology and
they will attribute its existence today to two modern
day pioneers.
Hungarian Dr. Ignaz von Peczeley’s (1822-
1911) interest was sparked as a child while observing
the markings in the eye of an owl with a
broken leg. He noticed that as the injury worsened,
so did the black marking in the owl’s eye.
After becoming a doctor, he began noticing ir-
regularities in his patients’ irises which led to his
charting an iris/body relationship map. Today
there are more than 20 charts, few of which are
similar.
The other pioneer was labeled the “Father of
Iridolog.” Dr. Bernard Jensen (1908-2001), was a
chiropractor who circled the globe to learn, teach
and to live out his lifelong commitment to treat
anyone who was suffering.
He defined Iridology as “the study of the iris”
and explained that, “by locating markings in the
iris of the eye, the trained Iridologist can determine
where there are strengths, weaknesses, and
deficiencies in the body. Iridology is a wonderful
means of demonstrating the rewards of choosing
a healthy way of life; the ideal tool of preventive
medicine.”
In Iridology, each eye is believed to correspond
with their side of the body. An Iridologist will generally
use equipment such as a flashlight, magnifying
glass, camera or slit-lamp microscope to examine
a patient’s irises for tissue changes.
Generally speaking, the upper organs are represented
at the top of the eye while the lower organs
are at the bottom. Patterns, colors, spots, layers,
and other characteristics of the iris are examined
to determine information about a patient’s systemic
health.
Practitioners match their findings with “iris
Psychic Phenomenon
charts” which divide the iris into four zones that
correspond to specific parts of the human body.
This helps the practitioner to distinguish between
healthy systems and organs in the body that are
overactive, distressed, deficient or inflamed.
Iridologists believe that this information depicts
an individual’s susceptibility towards certain illnesses,
reflects past medical problems or predicts
future health problems.
So, if you are not getting the resolution you need
from your traditional medical practitioner, you
might want to find someone to stare into your eyes!
Mesquite Isn’t Flat Anymore
TRIPPING: How would you like to get away
rom Las Vegas for a change of scenery and a
aid-back fun time? You can by simply driving
orth on I-15 for 80 miles and in a little over
n hour you’ll be in a quaint little town with
ardly any traffic or noise and you can relax,
lay a round of golf, visit a health spa, dine in
gourmet restaurant or an appealing buffet or
it the tables or slots without having to fight
he crowds and traffic indigenous to a Vegas
ega-resort. That’s what caused us to buy a
econd home in Mesquite, Nevada, five years
go on October 15, 2007.
TIME FLIES: They say time flies when
ou’re having fun, so I guess we’re having a
all. Going to Mesquite 2-3 times a month has
ruly enhanced our lifestyle and way of life.
DESERT SUCCESS STORY: What started
ut as a sleepy little town called Mesquite
lats years before - it officially became simply
Mesquite” in 1898. Originally an agriculural
community, it also was home for a thrivng
dairy industry. There were five dairy farms
there once.
FAST-GROWING: At one time, Mesquite
was the fastest-growing community, per capita,
than any other town in the country. It went
from just a few thousand residents to over
17,000, in just a few years. I bet you thought
Las Vegas or Henderson owned that distinction.
AMENITIES: To our way of thinking, Mesquite
has it all. There are nine, that’s right
nine, championship golf courses in the im-
mediate vicinity - some with million dollar
homes on their fringes. There are three goodsized
hotel-casinos operating 24-hours a day,
where you can gamble, dine at gourmet restaurants
or inexpensive buffets, visit a health
spa that will rub you the right way, swim, bowl,
play a game or two of bingo, go to a movie, or
just chill out.
There’s a fine hospital – Mesa View; a
well-stocked library that just doubled in size
and is open 7-days a week, a huge, 24-hour
Walmart just off Exit 120, where you can
shop for anything your family needs all day
and night. And, believe it or not, there’s even a
municipal airport.
A lot of golfers fly there to take advantage of
some great golf packages. There are a number
of houses of worship and anything else one
Around Town
Poor Richard’s Players Encouraging Dialogue
Since I last visited with our friends at Poor
ichard’s Players, they have been busy little
ees. For being a newer theatre troop, foundd
in 2011, PRP is making things happen!
Their June production of Dick Johnson:
rivate Eye (written by Mark Valentin and
RP’s own Maxim Lardent) was awarded
est of Fringe during the 2012 Vegas Fringe
estival. It was written as a parody of 1930s
adio era productions with the silly sound
ffects and fictional advertisements.
As a celebration of all things election year,
RP produced David Mamet’s November
or two weekends in August, with six perforances
at the Las Vegas Little Theatre, loated
near Spring Mountain and Valley View.
ickets sold out so quickly, and demand was
o high, they extended another two perforances.
November is an Oval Office satire capuring
two days in the life of a beleaguered
merican commander-in-chief, Charles
mith. It’s November in a presidential elecion
year and incumbent Smith’s chances
for reelection are looking grim.
Approval ratings are down, his money is
running out and nuclear war might be imminent.
Though his staff has thrown in the
towel and his wife has begun to prepare for
her post-White House life, Chuck isn’t ready
to give up just yet, even though he also has
to worry about the annual presidential pardon
of a single turkey.
Hopefully our dedicated theatre followers
were aware of the PRP’s production of
Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman, which
ran from October 19-November 4 at the Las
Vegas Little Theatre.
The Pillowman is about Katurian Katurian,
a writer of grisly short stories. Katurian
has been arrested by two detectives, Ariel and
Tupolski, because some of his stories resemble
recent child murders.
Artistic Director Lysander Abadia had this
to say about the show:
“In a Great Recession the first reaction
is to cut funding to the arts. In parts of the
Middle East artists are being arrested and
disappearing almost weekly.
“Art in all its forms is the unpredictable
thing that a government cannot control.
And so governments fear it.
“It is true expression, and done well, art is
contagious. It spreads ideas like wildfire and
encourages self-reflection clarity of opinion.
“We want to remind the audience that a
story like The Pillowman can and does still
happen in our present day. Through this
brilliantly written piece of art, we hope to
inspire those who see this to realize the importance
of art in their lives.
“Without art, communication is silenced,
and so with independent thinking. Through
the social experiment performed by Katuria,
we [PRP] hope to show the many ways art is
born, and how difficult it is to judge whether
art is good or not.
“Is art better through skill and practice
and inspiration? Or is art better through
pain and suffering and life experience?
“We encourage the audience to continue
this dialogue long after attending our production.
It is only through dialogue that we
can truly have a free society?”
As I always say, get out there and support
Bus to the Boat
So I had to do it for myself.
I’ve heard all sorts of good things
from Vegas Voyagers who have participated
in our “Bus to the Boat” program.
How they love being picked up at a local
hotel; bussed right to the pier in LA; and
just sitting back and as the saying goes
……leave the driving to us.
It’s all true. I just returned from escorting
our latest Vegas Voyagers group
of over 60 members on the Princess Sapphire
Coastal California cruise.
And the transportation to and from the
pier couldn’t have worked out better; all
provided by our good friends at Vision
Coach. We left Las Vegas at 7:30 am and
by 1:30 pm - not only were we at the pier,
we were all checked in and on board.
As for the return, with our group
disembarkation, we were off the ship,
through customs and immigration and
on our way back to Las Vegas by 9:30 am.
The transportation process just could
not have worked better.
Oh and the cruise? It was just fantastic.
Princess Cruises has lightening in a
bottle with the coastal California cruise
itinerary. They seem to be the only cruise
line offering this cruise on a regular basis.
And what an itinerary it is!
Leaving Los Angeles on Saturday, we
arrived in San Francisco Sunday afternoon
at around noon. Normally the ship
Price is per person based on double occupancy and includes all port charges, taxes,
would dock
by 1:00 pm
but since
it was Fleet
Week we
dropped anchor
in San
Francisco
Bay for a
ring side
seat for the
Navy’s Blue
Angels show.
We were
dock side by 6 pm.
Here’s the great thing about the San
Francisco port call - we stayed in this
beautiful location until Monday at 1 pm;
thereby giving us a full 24 hours in the
City by the Bay. We all really had a lot of
time to enjoy all that the city has to offer.
Tuesday through Friday brought us to
a different port every day. Tuesday was
Santa Barbara, Wednesday Catalina Is-
land. On Thursday we were in San Diego
and Friday Ensenada, Mexico.
Space does not permit me to give full
details on each port call. I will tell you
that in each port there is so much to do
and it is easy to walk around each port
if you don’t want to participate in any of
the prearranged shore excursions.
I particularly enjoyed Santa Barbara.
It is very easy to walk right from the
port to the main street of Santa Barbara,
State Street and just explore all the
shops, sights and restaurants of this sea
side community.
And here is the good news; we are repeating
this cruise again April 6 – 13,
2013. Prices are exactly the same as this
past cruise and start at just $999 per person
based on double occupancy for an
Having A Problem Reaching Me?
As I write this article, Ray and I are flying
at about 40,000 feet returning to Las
Vegas from our long delayed honeymoon
in Paris, Rome and a fantastic cruise
on Royal Carribbean to Sicily, Greece,
and Turkey. This is the stuff dreams are
made of. But just before our departure,
I received a puzzling email from my
daughter, Ashley. “Have a wonderful
time,” she wrote,
“Now turn off your
cell phone.” I was
surprised by her
warning but we’d
already contacted
phone carriers to
handle calls during
our trip, so I blithely
went on my way.
Our phone plan
seemed well thought
out, and should
have worked. But
we quickly found our incoming calls
were being dropped, delayed for hours
or never transmitted. Plus, there were
difficulties with text messages, photos,
and things we couldn’t even decipher.
And returning calls to people over 9 time
zones away turned out to be even more
of a problem. In fact, we’d only been
away two days when we received an alert
from our carrier that our phone bill was
Ray and I wish all of you
a very Happy Thanksgiving!
already $240 and climbing! My daughter
had been right. Cell phone use abroad is
still costly and a problem.
So I certainly apologize to all of you who
tried to reach me late September to mid
October. I’m back at my desk now so
don’t hesitate to call.
I’ve so much to tell you about our
upcoming trips, like our Nov. 28 – 29
Follies”. This event is already turning
into a Vegas Vacationers classic, and includes
a tour of Riverside’s magnificent
still dazzles during the Holidays when
its trimmed with 3 million lights.
Each year its decorations seem more
spectacular. And day one of our “Follies”
Getaway even includes
lunch and dinner, followed
the next morning by a get
continental breakfast with
mimosas and pointsettias or,
if you prefer, nonalcoholic
versions which are equally
delicious. Yum! Then we’ll
lunch at the terrific Sherman’s
Delicatessen before
attending the almost 3 hour
long matinee of the “Palm
Sex Over 60? You Bet!
Would it surprise you to
know that for many Las Vegas
seniors, sex actually gets
better with age?
Maybe it’s because we
have fewer pressures such as
work, children or the fear of
pregnancy. Even in nursing
homes, romantic relationships
develop that lead to
sexual intimacy.
As an older adult myself,
I understand the issue firsthand.
The other evening my
wife asked me with a wink
to go upstairs with her to
cap off a great evening. It
was her idea; we had just
returned from dinner with
friends and were in a good mood.
But I was tired so I told her to pick one
– either go upstairs, or have sex. I could
not do both.
It’s a myth to say that our sexual function
remains unchanged as we get older;
it doesn’t. But a better understanding of
these changes may help prevent disappointment
or despair and may even help
you improve your intimacy.
When you bring up the subject of “sex
after 60,” most people think that medications
such as those used for erectile dysfunction
have changed the nature of intimacy
for the elderly. Yes, it’s true that
medications like Viagra have helped to
reinvigorate the sexual function of older
men, but there is much more to it than
popping a pill.
As we age, our bodies slow down, but our
thoughts about sex continue to be top of
mind - at least for men anyways. On average
older men still think about sex once
an hour, while women think about it three
or four times a day.
This is not to say that older women desire
sex less. It’s just a simple fact that men
think about it more.
Hormonal changes, medications, fitness
level, overall health status and other
factors play a large role in the nature of
sexual activity for older adults. Some
medications such as antidepressants may
also reduce libido and even hinder sexual
function.
Physical imitations such as arthritis or
other chronic diseases may also play a role
in your ability to perform. Depression is
also another factor that can greatly reduce
the libido and make it difficult to get in
the mood.
It’s always a good idea to talk to your
doctor about your sexual function; make
it a part of your annual or semi-annual
checkup. Your doctor may help you by
identifying some underlying conditions
that may play a role in your sexual health.
The great news is that sexual activity
is a great exercise for any older adult. No
matter your age, good sex is a part of good
health.
When I speak to seniors who work out
and are active in programs at Nifty after
Fifty, the subject of sexual health is often
a part of the dialogue. The more fit you are
as you age, the better your sexual health
as well.
In fact, there are even specific exercises
that I have outlined in my book, Nifty after
Fifty that will help you. I have also shared
some specific positions that are perfect
for older adults, many of whom have bad
backs or other physical limitations that
may hinder the ability to perform.
Many older adults share with me very
personal stories of how they’ve improved
their sexual intimacy with their partners
as they become more fit by working out at
Nifty. I call this Connectile Function.
They tell me that their physical and
emotional bond with their partners is
much improved since their fitness levels
have risen. They call exercise the magic
bullet for an improved sex life and I can’t
argue with them.
Here are some key tips to improve sexual
relations for those over 60:
• Stay active and agile with exercise;
regular physical activity helps to improve
flexibility and self-esteem.
• Eat a nutritious and balanced diet.
• Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor.
• Men with erectile dysfunction have
many treatment options available. Medication,
medical devices and even surgeries
are available for men.
• Women suffering from
vaginal dryness and discomfort
during sexual relations
should use water-based
lubricants to make intimacy
more comfortable.
• Men, try to be more romantic
with small gestures
of intimacy such as a kiss or
hug.
• Talk about your sexual
likes and dislikes.
• Personal hygiene is very
important so make sure you
are clean all over. Pay attention
to yourself and your
self esteem will improve.
• Make intimacy a part of
your routine. Plan an event or time together.
Turn off the TV and talk to each other.
• Sexual intimacy can be just as enjoyable
as we age as it was when we were
in our teens. The key to improving your
sexual health, no matter your age, is to
improve your overall health and for me,
exercise can be the first step to a new and
very pleasurable chapter in your life.
Stella Chiropractic Wellness Center & the Shrinking Man
By: Angela Drake
How often do you want to
make a change in the way you
feel and the way you look?
It takes great will power
and commitment to achieve a
desired goal. Well, I am fortunate
to have watched the
determination and focus of
Vegas Voice Publisher Dan
Roberts shrink right before
my eyes.
Dan came to our Stella Chiropractic
Wellness Center
wanting a change. He wanted
to go from a 42 inch waist to
a size 34 pant. Our journey
and friendship began.
Dan faithfully came to our
office twice a week. Every
time we would begin by immediately
putting him on our
vibrating machine.
This “Vibrating Joy Plate”
machine jiggles the body. It
activates the circulatory system,
produces a lymphatic re-
lease and releases serotonin -
which activates the sensation
of joy.
Watching Dan come off the
Joy Plate was quite entertaining.
Nothing better than
watching a “joyous release”
occur to our patients after a
hard day of life. It really does
make you feel wonderful!
Next stop – the i-Lipo Room.
I-Lipo is a low level laser that
liquefies fat in a very short
period.
It only takes 20 minutes
with NO pain, NO needles and
NO down time. And best of all,
the results are immediate!
This fat liquefying procedure
became Dan’s nap time.
At every visit (like clock
work) he would fall asleep.
He would happily meet the
warmth of the bed, the aromatherapy
enriched oils wafting
through the air and the
dimmed lights. For Dan it was
a deep relaxation well de-
served.
Not only did he experience
fat loss, he was also experiencing
the Biomat which is
an amethyst crystal infrared
heated mat. It strengthens
the immune system, increases
energy and vitality, balances
PH, calms the mind, eases
joint pain, enhances brain
function, and improves lymphatic
flow… and so much
more. Most importantly for
Dan, it stimulated deep sleep.
Every time the twenty minutes
elapsed, out of his restful
nap, he would unfold - inches
lighter! Inch loss proved every
time! We also measured to
confirm the success.
In order for the fat to leave
the metabolic system, Dan
would then need to get a mandatory
“sweat in” of a 400 plus
caloric burn. A good sweat
would eliminate the liquefied
fat out of the system.
Dan’s very effective nap
times turned to fat lose and
he accomplished his mission
of wearing that size 34 pants.
A true cause for celebration!
And last, but not least, during
one of Dan’s visits he experienced
Dr. Stella’s Chiropractic
alignment - which is
truly a healing in and of itself.
For me, this experience has
been an enriching one. It was
with great satisfaction and
pure joy for me and Dr. Stella
to watch and help him achieve
his weight goal.
Dan the shrinking man is
now shrunk! You can too!
AARP Salutes Veterans: Navigating
all drivers, but military veterans face
particular challenges behind the wheel.
Studies have shown that veterans are
more likely to be involved in car crashes
than other drivers. In fact, traffic accidents
are the leading cause of death
for military personnel in their first year
after returning home from war.
Reviewing the driving records of tens
of thousands of troops, USAA discovered
that service members were involved in
at-fault accidents 13% more frequently
after deployments.
That’s why in the month of November
we’re offering ALL military personnel,
veterans and their families free enrollment
in the four-hour AARP Driver
Safety course to brush up on behindthe-wheel
In Nevada, those 55+ can also get a
I have the great pleasure to serve as the
I am also proud to announce that there is
On the plus side, I must commend Administrator
from those attending
several arbitrators already
working for the
a few comments that
stood out in my opinion.
One was from Commissioner
Marilyn
Brainard who repeatedly
mentioned her
prior appointment with
the Real Estate Division - and then went on
to bash homeowners. This was quite a surprise
since her position is as a homeowner representative.
While her term is officially over, she continues
to serve in that post until the governor
appoints someone to take her place. And that
could take as long as a year.
The second shocker was by attorney and
current arbitrator Steve Wenzel; who rather
than offer a suggestion at one point gave Administrator
Anderson an ultimatum stating
that he would leave the program as an arbitra-
as written.
While we are on the subject of bills and
legislation, I wonder how many of you have
received the email that has swept the country.
Called the Debt Free America Act, federal
bill H.R. 4646 was sponsored by Rep. Chaka
Fattah. This bill provided for a 1% tax on any
bank transfers of any kind.
The fact checking web site Snopes.com
claims this was not a hoax; thus many people
have forwarded the email many times over.
Personally I prefer Factcheck.org since in the
past few years Snopes has proven unreliable.
I also recently received an email from one of
our readers asking me to check into this bill.
Since I have also seen this before, I checked
with the Library of Congress and discovered
that this bill, although submitted in 2010,
never passed. According to Forbes on Line, it
never will receive support from either the Senate
or House of Representatives.
All concerned can take a deep breath and
know that at least one foolish tax idea won’t
come to fruition. But I have no doubt that
when our Legislature meets there will be plenty
more.
Has Anything Helped Homeowners?
A few months ago I wrote on some new programs
which have become available for homeowners.
Unfortunately, it now appears that the
Nevada Hardest Hit Fund has yet to make a
real difference.
The attorney generals for all of the states,
except California entered into settlement
agreements with the five major mortgage
banks. Nevada used this
money to set up the Nevada’s
Hardest Hit Fund.
The Fund offered five programs
through participating
servicers to help homeowners.
The following is a breakdown
of the programs and how
they can help homeowners.
There is a Mortgage Assistance
Program which is intended to provide
temporary financial assistance for underemployed
and unemployed homeowners who have
experienced involuntary job loss and/or severe
reductions in income. It pays up to $1,000 of the
borrower’s 1st mortgage payment.
I have personally seen only one client that
has qualified for this program. It was fairly easy
for him to get and it has really helped him out.
A Short Sale Acceleration Program was
designed to assist income restricted homeowners,
who are short selling
their home and are not
leaving the state.
In my opinion, this
program is the
most effective.
Since the
settlements,
short sales
appear to
be expedited
and
run much
faster and
more effectively for my clients.
I have not however seen large increases in
the amount of money the banks are offering the
Sellers back which this program was supposed
to supplement.
A Second Mortgage Reduction Plan assists
income restricted homeowners who have
a second lien that is interfering with the short
sale of their home or the refinance/ modification
of their first mortgage. It was designed with
the hope that qualified homeowners can extinguish
their 2nd lien through a combination of
funds contributed by both Nevada’s Hardest Hit
Funds and their Servicer.
Recently, I have seen several forgiveness of
the entire second mortgage from Bank of America
on severely upside down homes in some
circumstances. Hopefully the other banks will
follow suit.
And perhaps most importantly the
Principal Reduction Program: This program
is designed to assist income restricted homeowner
candidates who want to keep their home.
Homeowners can receive a principal reduction
of up to $100,000.
Of the five programs, this particular program
has the most potential to help upside-down
homeowners.
Unfortunately this program has had the most
limited effect. Of the many cases I am involved
in, I have not seen anyone qualify for this program.
I am hopeful this will change and that the
program just needs more time, but who it will
help and how it will be applied still remains to
be seen.
Perhaps most disturbing is a new statistic I
have seen which indicates that in many states
the settlement money was not applied to the
housing industry at all. Obviously, the outcome
of the election will dramatically affect these programs
and their funding.
Making Wealth Decisions for 2013
You cannot bet your fortune on who
will or will not be elected the President of
the United States. The only things in your
control right now are how you will prepare
for the final vote tally and how you
will react when you learn who has won.
First, let’s take a look at where your
money should be right now. As an estate
planning attorney, I am compelled to listen
to all sides of the political arguments
so I can make recommendations to my
clients on protecting their assets.
Mind you, I am not in the business of
advising clients where to put their money
to gain massive wealth on investments,
but rather, how to preserve wealth against
significant harm.
Currently, we are in an environment of
potential harm to investors and assets. To
that end, let me share where the majority
of your assets should be for the sake of
protecting your portfolio from the impact
of the upcoming election.
As long as we don’t know the outcome
of the election, your money should be
parked in money markets or short-term
CDs. How much you earn right now is not
as important as finding a backstop – a
place where value will not be reduced.
I have heard clients say that this is a
great time for growth in the market and
that all thinking persons should be in
the market to get fabulous gains. I have
a substantial issue with such statements.
To start, companies are cutting back,
storing up
inventory
in hopes of
economic
change, and
generally
becoming
lean and
thin. They
are not expanding.
They are
not selling
their productssignificantly.
They
are, in the majority, sitting on large supplies
of cash because they will need to be
very liquid for the next two to four years.
On the one hand, if President Obama is
re-elected, then that cash will be for sur-
vival through six months of his pounding
negotiations with Congress to extend
some of the Bush tax cuts. During that
time, these companies expect poor or irregular
sales.
There is almost no appetite among
business leaders to guess what President
Obama will do next. So cash will be king.
In a Romney presidency, corporate
cash reserves will be used to fuel (and I
mean red hot) massive expansion as the
business leaders will anticipate pro-business
government. In fact, because there
is so much cash in reserve that would be
brought into the market, should Romney
prevail, inflation could actually be a real
concern in the future.
In the meantime, keep your cash as liquid
as possible. A few months of income
loss is a lot better than living through another
market bounce or dip.
cell phones. Nine and ten-year-olds even have
their own mobile phones.
The world has definitely changed within
the last two decades and cell phones played a
major role in the advancement of our country.
They have invaded our offices, churches,
classrooms, ballparks, restaurants and public
restrooms, to name a few.
Communication between individuals, families,
businesses, law enforcement and government
officials has brought us closer together.
Sharing news or emergencies has been a godsend.
Cell phones seem to be capable of amazing
and limitless feats.
However, there is a downside.
There is such a thing called work place
etiquette. Most of the time cell phones can be
inappropriate, and users rude.
Always turn your phone to vibrate and never
take a call while in a meeting. Cell phone
Snacks – Under 80 Calories!
Are you getting into the “holiday” theme
nd snacking? Oh boy, with the upcoming
oliday goodies, the average person gains 5
o 7 pounds! Shocking, isn’t it?
I found that even with exerising
prior to the holidays,
still may gain a few
ounds and they
re all located in
ne spot! Where
id that come
rom?
Here are some
ow caloric snacks
hat you can indulge
ithout having
hat “guilt” feelng.
These are for
cheese lovers” –
f which I admit
am guilty. I love
heese!
Parmesan Popcorn: 1 cup
ir-popped popcorn, tossed with ¼
conversations are your private world and
shouldn’t be shared with co-workers unless its
work related.
While waiting for the CEO to arrive at a recent
staff meeting, one end of the table sat six
men, ages twenty-two through sixty-five. All
six were either texting or checking twitter accounts,
facebook pages or surfing the web. Not
one held a verbal conversation with the other.
It’s unprofessional to take calls when you’re
with a client, customer or even a medical pa-
teaspoon garlic powder and 1 tablespoon
grated Parmesan cheese – 56 calories per
serving! This is one of my favorite snacks
and very easy to make.
2 Figgy Blue Bites:
For each bite, 1
teaspoon blue
cheese on
(fresh) fig half,
drizzled with ¼
teaspoon honey
– 74 calories
per serving.
Olive-Tomato
Skewer:
1 inch Swiss
cheese cube
skewered with
1 Mezzetta
Mediterranean
Nicosia style olive
and 1 baby
spinach leaf -
65 calories per
tient.
If you absolutely need to take a
call, ask your client first if it would be
permissible. Most people would allow
it. Only the hardcore jerks would say
no.
Texting is unsuitable in a meeting,
also. Plus, it can be extremely dangerous.
Never, ever, drive and text.
One sad incident happened back
East where a young teenager was
texting while driving and drifted into
oncoming traffic. She died along with
the other teenage girls in her car. It
was a horrendous accident which killed six
lives and ruined their families forever.
There is also a comic side to cell phones.
A friend’s father was in the hospital for surgery
and he felt he wasn’t getting the appropriate
amount of care and medical attention
serving.
Mini Cheese Plate: 2 – Rosemary crisp
bread crackers, 1/3 ounce Gouda cheese,
and 5 read grapes - 64 calories per serving.
Easy Hors D’oeuvre: 1 Pillsbury Savoring
Frozen Appetizer, Cheese and Spinach -
65 calories per serving.
2 Creamy Salmon Rolls: For each roll,
wrap ½ ounce smoked salmon around 2
teaspoons 1/3-less-fat cream cheese and 1
watercress sprig - 74 calories per serving.
Brie & Roasted Pepper Toast: ½ ounce
Brie cheese melted on thin baguette slice,
topped with 1 small strip roasted red pepper
- 64 calories per serving.
Cheesy Chips: 9 Archer Farms Smoky Chipotle
Cheddar Reduced Fat Potato Chips -
72 calories per serving.
I also will microwave some Ritz crackers
with some low-fat cheese for 10-15 seconds
and then put salsa on top. This concoc-
he felt he deserved. So he called 911 from his
hospital bed.
At a recent family get-together, everyone
was sitting in the living room chatting and
exchanging embarrassing stories about each
other when a nephew answered his cell phone
with a baffled look on his face. The call was
from his wife who had just left the room. She
was calling from the bathroom to inform him
she needed toilet paper.
Over ten million 911 cell phone calls have
been by accident. They have been categorized
as butt dialed.
Moms and Dads rush out of the house, only
to dash back in. They grab their cell phones,
but forget the kids’ lunches. There’s probably
an app for that.
Cell phones are definitely a modern marvel
if used correctly, diplomatically and safely,
however…
Health Fitness
tion is very filling and helps me to get rid
of some hunger while I’m waiting for my
dinner to cook.
There are also other snacks that help
– keeping string cheese handy. One stick
can also help to cut down on snacking
urges. When I purchase carrots or celery
on a weekly basis, I cut them into bite size
and place them into a zip lock bag to grab
whenever hunger strikes!
So try to think “outside the box” and
create some low-caloric snacks. I try to eat
some snacks before going out to those holiday
parties, so that I am not “famished”
when I arrive!
It’s tempting to try all the goodies, but at
least you won’t be gobbling them all up and
having that guilt feeling afterwards. Enjoy
the holidays – one of the pleasures of life!
NOVEMBER 22, 1957
The two fifteen year olds were nervous. They
had just arrived in Philadelphia and were
about to perform in public.
They had done so many times. However, this
was beau coup different.
With dozens of teens dancing behind him,
on November 22, 1957, Dick Clark introduced
“Tom and Jerry” to his American Bandstand
TV audience. The boys lip-synched a song of
theirs that had just sold over 100,000 copies.
The reaction was lukewarm. And, the duo
appeared destined to be one hit wonders.
Both boys were born in 1941. They lived
three blocks from one another in a middle
class section of Queens.
Although they attended the same elementary
school, they really didn’t meet until they
were cast in a graduation performance of Alice
in Wonderland. “Tom” played the White
Rabbit and “Jerry” the Cheshire Cat.
“Tom” came from a musical family. In addition
to being a college professor, his father
was an accomplished bass player and dance
bandleader. Mom taught music at a local
school.
“Jerry’s” background was more mundane.
His dad was a traveling salesman and his
mother a housewife.
Nonetheless, he developed an inexplicable
passion for singing when he was only five. It
Valley of Fire State Park
was so intense
that he spent
hours after class
crooning in the
echo chamberlike
stairwells of
his elementary
school.
Shortly after
meeting, the boys
started singing
together. They
idolized the Everly
Brothers and
tried to re-create
their two-part
harmony. They
got so good that
they were often
invited to perform
at local dances.
By the age of twelve, “Tom,” with the help
of his father, began writing songs. Meanwhile,
“Jerry’s” voice developed to such an extent
that, by popular demand, he sang as cantor at
his own bar mitzvah.
In 1957, a small label agreed to produce
one of “Tom’s” songs that ended up No. 49 on
the pop charts, thereby catching Dick Clark’s
eye.
Things tumbled downhill from there. Neither
“Tom” nor “Jerry” were able to duplicate
their initial success. So, upon graduating from
high school, they decided to move on.
“Tom” enrolled in Queens College as an
undergrad in English literature and thereafter
Time Traveler
Brooklyn Law. “Jerry” went to Columbia for a
bachelor’s degree in art history and eventually
a master’s in mathematics.
Even though they attended different colleges,
the boys stayed in touch, played at local
coffees houses and expanded their repertoire
to include folk. In between their studies, they
also managed to record and release a few
singles. Although none garnered any success,
their efforts did attract the attention of a talent
scout for a major studio.
So, in 1964, they got an audition with Columbia
Records, which agreed to produce the
boys’ first album. It consisted of twelve folk
type songs and was a complete flop.
Disgruntled, “Tom” moved to England to
pursue a solo career. While there, he eked a
living by performing in folk clubs and coffee
houses.
As for “Jerry,” he decided to finish his degree
in mathematics.
Unbeknownst to the boys, radio stations
began receiving requests for one of their album’s
songs. Hoping to turn a profit, a Columbia
producer decided to improve the track
by overdubbing it with an electric guitar, bass
and drums. When he released the single, it
skyrocketed to No. 1 on the charts!
Upon hearing the news, “Tom” immediately
returned home, reunited with “Jerry,”
and they started creating some of the greatest
music in history.
By the way, the song that started it all was
called The Sound of Silence. And, “Tom” and
“Jerry” decided to start going by their real
names: Simon and Garfunkel.
“How May I Help You?”
A friend mentioned to me that he prefers
shopping at a particular thrift shop to visiting
a local department store. “In the one place,
I feel like somebody wants me there. In the
other, it feels like I am inconveniencing the
staff by showing up.”
It has to do with how they treat people who
enter. It’s a management thing.
Human beings are odd creatures.
Maybe I am picky, but it is worthwhile to
me to drive a bit further and pay a bit more
to shop at the grocery store that greets me
personally and carries products that are intentionally
healthy and cost-effective. A cup
of coffee and occasionally a warm hug add to
my shopping experience. It’s a quality of life
thing.
They greet me by name at my bank of
choice in not one, but two valley branches.
How we relate to one another matters.
Did you notice those “watch parties” that
developed last month when the President’s
address to the Democratic National Convention
changed to a smaller venue? Folks unable
to be present in person gathered in bars
and coffeehouses to watch the speech together.
They could have watched from the convenience
of their homes, but they chose to be
with others. Humans like to be together.
My Republican neighbors invest themselves
in personal contact, sharing meals and engaging
in conversation in preparation for the
election. They could stay home and play with
the grandchildren or read.
They recognize the value of face-to-face
contact. We like to be together.
A live conversation where I can see and hear
other human beings is almost always bet-
meeting, email chain or Facebook
post. So much more information is
communicated!
Christians talk about God as being
incarnate, enfleshed, having
corporeal presence. It takes some
mental gymnastics to appreciate
the willingness of a divine power to
limit self to this crazy human container.
And yet we say that is precisely
what the Ruler of the Universe, the
Creator of All that Is, chooses. Whatever for?!
Really, which grocery store would Jesus frequent?
Why?
I think about these things as I observe the
political conversations of late. What if the
voices strove to be more like the employees at
that particular thrift store - offering respect
It may not win a vote. But it may
Woman in Wheelchair Saves People with Pain, Fibromyalgia, Neuropathy and other Horrible Symptoms!
Karri Stokely (Lakeland, FL) says,
“I feel better now than I have felt in
my entire adult life thanks to Louella
Harris.” Karri spent days in bed due to
migraine headaches and a lowered immune
system disorder. Then she met Louella.
James Tomasi (Oklahoma City, OK) declares,
“I would be dead today if it were not
for Louella Harris.” James was ready to
commit suicide due to the pain of Trigeminal
Neuralgia when his wife heard Louella on the
radio.
Barbara Ellington (Boston, MA) tells
everyone, “I’m back to work because of
a woman in a wheelchair.” Barbara, an
artist, had lost the use of her hands and arms
due to pain. Her career was over. Then she saw
Louella on television.
Louella Harris, a master degreed
rehabilitation counselor (Lakeland, FL) who
contracted polio at age 3, is saving lives by
spreading the word about a little-known
procedure that is bringing pain relief to
thousands.
Thirteen years ago Harris was confined
to bed due to fibromyalgia and post-polio
syndrome. The pain was so intense that any
sort of movement was agony. Her husband
Richard had to help Louella with all her needs.
She couldn’t even sit up or hold a book. “Like
many of my clients,” Harris recalls, “I was told
to learn to live with it.”
Then a friend told Louella about a nonsurgical
procedure practiced by only 200
chiropractors worldwide. Harris says, “I
couldn’t get past the word ‘chiropractor’. I was
extremely skeptical and had no idea it’s now
so advanced. There are many different types
that don’t twist or crack. I had never heard of
NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic
Association), a very specific type of chiropractic
that meticulously corrects the position of the
atlas, the top bone of the spine at the base of
the skull. But from the moment my NUCCA
doctor corrected my body imbalance, I felt
all the pain rush out of me. To this day, it
never ceases to amaze me how well it works.”
In 3-months Louella was out of bed,
working, pregnant, and forming a national
non-profit consumer awareness organization,
The National Awareness Campaign for Upper
Cervical Care, Inc. to inform the public about
this phenomenal answer to pain.
According to Harris, many people with
chronic conditions like fibromyalgia,
headaches of all kinds, whiplash, neck,
shoulder, back, hip, and knee pain,
as well as carpal tunnel can be helped
significantly without drugs or surgery. “Results
may differ, but many will have their lives
restored,” Harris said on an interview on CBS.
“This technology was available all the time I
suffered. It is amazing to me that, as a master’s
degreed rehabilitation counselor aware of the
latest medical technology, I was completely
ignorant of the role a 2-ounce bone at the base
of our skull plays in our overall health. It’s one
thing to hurt because nothing can be done –
but suffering because of ignorance is tragic.”
The Today Show showed NUCCA
lowering high blood pressure equal to two
medications. The host of The Montel
Williams Show says, “I have multiple
sclerosis and neuralgic pain 24-hours a day,
365-days a year with pain in my feet and I’ve
struggled with balance... now 12 days after
treatment I’m walking differently, my pain
is less...there was no pain involved
(in the treatment) and I had
instantaneous relief...I could stand
straight for the first time.”
The Discovery Health
Channel featured NHRA racecar
driver Tony Schumacher, “In October
2000, I was involved in a 300mph
crash. My left leg was broken and
I had a serious concussion… I
tried everything... After NUCCA, the
color returned to my face and my
dizziness and concussion were
gone.”
Louella’s staff locates
chiropractors who have received
the intensive training required to
perform this very unusual technique.
She says, “Most people are unaware
of this type of chiropractic. As a
result, people who are suffering may be right
next door to their answer... a NUCCA doctor.”
“We’ve found an outstanding NUCCA doctor
right here in
Clark County”
says Harris. “Dr.
Devin Luzod
of Spinal Care
of Nevada has
patients visiting
from all parts of
the U.S.”
Luzod suffered
a major car
accident years
prior. Afraid of
chiropractic,
he sought
out NUCCA.
Although
relief was not
instant, results
came over
time, and he decided to become a NUCCA
doctor to help others suffering without hope.
Luzod is also certified by the International
Chiropractic Pediatric Association and treats
mothers during pregnancy, and infants with
colic, ADD / ADHD, allergies, asthma,
ear infections and other pediatric
disorders.
Luzod refuses to take credit for these
miracles, and says he does not cure anything.
“All I do is reposition the atlas, the vertebrae
closest to the brainstem restoring the body’s
own ability to self-repair.”
A number of his patients with certain
symptoms from serious neurological
conditions like
Neuropathy, Multiple Sclerosis,
Parkinson’s and Trigeminal Neuralgia
have responded well. “The list of conditions is
very diversified because the procedure restores
proper nerve flow to all parts of the body. That
makes a huge difference in overcoming a
number of issues,” says Luzod. “Many patients
end up in NUCCA offices as a last resort when
nothing else has worked, but it can be a
preventive procedure as well.”
Louella’s body healed when nothing else
worked and a national non-profit consumer
awareness organization resulted. James Tomasi
is out talking to everyone with Trigeminal
Neuralgia. Karri has not had one migraine
since the first time her atlas was corrected.
Barbara is painting her pictures with joy.
These are only a few of thousands who are
discovering this little-known healthcare
technology.
Jim Burleson, PR director for the nonprofit
says, “Louella’s mission is to raise
public awareness of this safe and natural
procedure effective for children as well as
adults. Thousands of people are getting their
lives back as a result of our TV and radio
programs. Anyone with any kind of physical
problem needs to give this technology serious
consideration. Our non-profit has arranged
with Dr. Luzod for people to call and benefit
from an amazing offer - it shouldn’t cost
you an arm and a leg to correct your health.
When you bring in this article, you will receive
a complete consultation, examination, and an
x-ray of the problem area. This entire work-up
could cost you $225 elsewhere, however, when
you are one of the first 20 people to call and
schedule you’ll receive the entire work-up
for $37. But, please call right away because
I don’t know how long the Dr will make this
generous offer, and I don’t want you to miss
out. And I know from experience, further care
is very affordable.”
“His assistants are Maria, Brandi and Crystal
and they are really great people and his offices,
SPINAL CARE OF NEVADA, are warm and
friendly. Because of the great results people
achieve and his honesty in telling people if
he can’t help them, he’s been able to expand
into two locations - Summerlin: 1930 Village
Center Circle, Suite 11, Telephone: 566.HOPE
(4673) and Southwest: 8910 W. Tropicana,
Suite 6, Telephone: 944.HOPE (4673).
Call Maria, Brandi, or Crystal today for an
appointment. I know Dr. Luzod will tell you if
he can help you or not. No matter what you’ve
been through, don’t give up hope just yet - this
could be the missing piece you’ve been looking
for.”
